Same thought- I went as far as to assume he means 4ft rather than 4m.
Nice riding. What I like in spec ski paddling: it’s fun to have party waves and yell at each other whilst on the wave.
What do the board surfers think of you guys in the Break? Some places can get a little "territorial".
It’s true but we’ve been paddling for decades in this area so we all have to share and get along.
I tend to paddle away from surfers. We can catch waves from much further back or go to different places where surfers find it harder to get to and we have much longer and nicer waves. Ironically, my surfing has dropped off as I spend more time spec ski paddling. Wished I more time to surf as well (& more money for new surfboard 😅)
As a ski paddler you should always stay outside the lip: you can share a wave with surfers because they cannot come out to where you are (outside the lip). These paddlers caused a bit of havoc and would not have been popular: particularly with all of the falling off and letting a 19 foot chunk of fibreglass clean up through the break

Amazing footage and that crash was crazy! I must say your lens seems to always be free from spots: How do you keep it so clean? I am struggling with this as well when on downwind sessions.
Thank you :) I wish I could say it’s something I did, but the video is shot on the GoPro 11 or 12. It’s the anti drop lens that does all the work.

Could you talk me through the coloring process on this one? Full HDR on camera (insta pro one?)? Too much luminosity during the editing? A Hasselblad LUT? What's going on here?
I used the GoPro Quik app to edit the video and tried out a colour filter… some work well for water based videos and some not so well.

Why tip yourself over like that?
There was a high likelihood I was going to be hit in the face by a 16kg Surfski moving about 30km/hr… so the options were to take the hit or avoid the hit. The 2 second clip at the end of the video shows the actual speed. What would you have done?
@kesleykernes oh fair enough. Harder to get nailed in the face when you have a water cushion.

I had the amazing opportunity to train with an extremely experienced paddler a few years ago and whenever I experience a dangerous moment paddling, I hear his voice instructing me to take action.

That was a wild session. The waves must have been much than it looks on RUclips. The dread of charging into the wave hoping that you can stay on.

I've repaired it ski in the past... but in this case there was no resurections... the angle grinder got a work out :(

I have to bring my BOS surf ski up there one day. The waves look so fantastic - they must be much bigger than RUclips is displaying. I am so glad that you bailed out as that red ski approached you. Were any skis damaged?
It would be great to have you :) You're right... as good as action cameras get they just don't capture the size ans speed of the swell as well as the naked eye. I was lucky, the red ski bounced right over my boat, so there was no impact, unfortunitly, the ski washed to the beach and took a bit of damaged as the beach wash rolled it up and down the beach as I swam to shore.... nothing that couldn't be fixed. Thanks for asking :)
You didn’t show ow to remove the bulb, I was struggling with the removing of bulb!

If its a small halogen just pull it. Mine was sideways, so just pull to the right (Smeg double oven).

That's no good. I'm no Smeg rep... infact I've had heaps of issues with it too. Lights keep going out and the door won't close so its sealed...
Having spent my 70 years riding all kinds of wavecraft, I can pretty much guarantee that in those conditions the surfski crew is having the most fun out there.

Great session… waves had some power behind them and as the morning went on, the power was increasing… until boom… crushed ski
I wrote off my Vajda Tomahawx Spec ski on similar waves. Vajda exited the Spec ski scene. Also did severe damage to my old Fenn LS (also a spec ski). Thankfully my friend repaired it but it was heavily since that day.
Nice work… write offs and damage are evidence that you’re playing on the edge :) This ski also had some prior repairs and was sitting in the low twenty kilo range.
Last Sunday was wonderful. You are lucky to have dolphins close by. Dolphins haven’t been near me for a number of years. 😥 I miss them. What ski are you paddling? I own a BOS Raptor.

It was a stunning day. Often there are dolphins are Nobbys and Newcastle Beach. It really makes my day when they come so close 😀 I’m paddling the Epic V10 in this video. I believe the BOS Raptor is a great ski.

Hello from the Isle of Man. First time viewer after watching local (to me) 'Islander Outdoors' and RUclips suggested your channel. Great footage! Dipping into a few more of your uploads and I have subscribed for future releases. Loads of kayaks and Paddle Boards over here, but your shape is new to me. Looks great to paddle out and holds a nice line surfing in. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thanks for the message and I hope you enjoy the videos 😀 Surf Life Saving is a way of life in Australia and we paddle Spec (specification) Surfski, which are a bit more durable… here’s an exert if found online… Spec skis are similar to surfskis, but are built to be more rugged and manoeuvrable than their downwind cousins. Due to the extra durability, they're often slightly heavier than surfskis. Spec skis are commonly seen in Surf Life Saving and are designed to handle breaking waves and larger swell. Great waves and wipeouts! You have an awesome break! Nice videos 😀 Usually the Surfski hull can take a real beating, the boat in this vid was about 10yrs old and the waves that day where smallish but packed a punch.
