"A teacher must not cowardly rest on the bed of authority, imposing their teachings as unchangeable, their example as untouchable, and their way of feeling as a standard for others. Instead, the teacher should awaken the student’s own consciousness, fostering independent thought and feeling. They should encourage the student to critically examine the teachings and examples given, and thus elevate them to autonomous thinking, to spiritual freedom. This is the task everywhere, but nowhere more so than in art, where ultimately, personality is decisive, and the greatest value of the work depends on the freedom and originality of the artist's personality. A character that is not free can only ever be a servant in the arts; they may wear a richly adorned uniform, they may become a court pianist, and many other things, but they will never be an artist, nor will they find spiritual fulfillment in art." Adolf Bernhard Marx

Why do I play at a slower tempo? #bach #classicalmusic #baroquemusic #glenngould #langlang
The Prelude in D Major, BWV 936, is a cheerful piece with a texture that we can find in several works by Bach, but also by Mozart and even Beethoven, among others. It brings to mind the Prelude in B Minor from the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Adagio from the Geharnischte Männer in The Magic Flute, or the second movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 2, for example. Like the other preludes I’m recording, this one is also included in the Kleine Präludien collection. I recorded it using the lute stop because I liked the sound it brings to this contrapuntal texture. I hope you enjoy it!

The Prelude in D Minor, BWV 935, is a piece within Johann Sebastian Bach’s educational repertoire. Included in the collection of Kleine Präludien, this prelude reflects Bach's genius in transforming technical exercises into deeply expressive music. It was likely composed during his time in Köthen (1717-1723). Written in 3/8 time, this prelude stands out for its rhythmic drive and imitative character. I hope you like it!
Gods I love this stupid tiny piano.
I'm not sure if I like your comment. It's contradictory for me to love something and call it stupid at the same time.
Again, bravo!

The Prelude in C minor, BWV 934, is part of the collection known as the Kleine Präludien (BWV 933-938), composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. These works were likely written between 1717 and 1723 during Bach's time in Köthen, although the exact date of composition is unknown. Written with pedagogical purposes in mind, these preludes served as teaching material for young musicians, helping them refine their instrumental technique and deepen their understanding of the fundamental principles of musical composition. I hope you enjoy this performance of a piece that, despite its brevity, captures the profound brilliance that defines Bach’s work.
Again, thank you, sir. I so appreciate your recordings. I have always loved J. S. Bach's work. Somehow, what you are doing here is more "approachable," even though I have been listening to Bach all of my life (I am 58). Someday, you'll offer your recordings as a collection, perhaps.
Thank you very much. I truly appreciate your comments and attention. The goal of this channel is precisely to make the music of the great composers more accessible to everyone-not just as listeners but also as performers. There are many people who could play these pieces but don’t, thinking they aren’t capable. This is often because in most recordings, great virtuosos play these pieces too quickly. However, the reality is that I’m confident many people can play them beautifully; they just need to take the leap. That’s my hope: to inspire others to play them as well. Regarding offering collections, I’m currently focused on growing the channel. Once I reach a higher number of subscribers, I plan to offer higher-quality recordings, perhaps on Amazon Music or Spotify. It would be a pleasure to do so. But first, I need to finance the recording sessions. I hope to achieve that soon. Best regards, and thank you again for your comments!
Thank you, sir, for your reply. I mean only to suggest. Some may be worth consideration. As to your mission, I say, "bravo!" As a young person, I played violin and cello, though poorly. I didn't have the maturity (patience), nor am I dexterous. We all celebrate the great performers and their artistry, but music is for all. Again, thank you. You are doing well.
Yes, thank you for the suggestion! Of course, great virtuosos are extraordinary musicians whom we all admire and appreciate. However, I believe that when their performances lead to feelings of discouragement or self-doubt in others who could also play beautifully, something is amiss. That’s how it is: music is for everyone. To listen to and to play.
@@LangLangsam for me, to listen. I am very okay with that
Muy buena música! Muy bien ejecutado.

I thought that being Lang Langsam, no one would play it slower than me, but I was wrong. I just listened to Gould's brilliant version, and he performs it slower and much better. I highly recommend it: ruclips.net/video/LwQkMENpKMo/видео.html

I am glad you like it!
Thank you, Langsam ❤ What an engaging and vibrant piece! You played it very well!
Thank you! No matter how one feels, hearing this piece always makes you smile.
At least on the inside, in my case.
BWV 933 is one of the pieces included in the collection of Kleine Präludien by Johann Sebastian Bach. While the exact date of composition is unclear, it is believed to have been written, probably for educational purposes, during Bach's time in Köthen, between 1717 and 1723. The Kleine Präludium in C major is a compact piece with a two-part structure that demonstrates Bach's mastery of counterpoint. It is an example of Bach’s ability to create works that are both technically sophisticated and expressive, even within the smaller and shorter forms. Of course, there is a very good version of the prelude by Glenn Gould, but the version by Grigory Gruzman is the one I most recommend. I hope you enjoy it!

I’ve decided to record Bach’s pieces from BWV 924 to 930, which belong to the so-called Kleine Präludien. Several of these preludes have been attributed to other composers, and these works, along with many others by Bach and various composers, are compiled in the Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Unfortunately, BWV 931 and 932 are incomplete, and their authorship remains uncertain.

The beginnings of "Adventures in Good Music II?" Just add some commentary to the piece you are playing. I love it.
Thank you for your comment and your advice. I’ll write something about the pieces I record. Best regards!
@LangLangsam I don't know if you are familiar with Dr. Karl Haas (who passed away perhaps 20 years ago) who for 30+ years had a wonderful radio program called "Adventures in Good Music." I learned SO much about music from him as a kid (I am 58).
Anyway, I REALLY appreciate your work here.
I wasn't familiar with Dr. Karl Haas. Thank you! I might be able to listen to something of his on RUclips. It's possible that he featured Bach's Praeambulum in G minor in one of his programs. I'm very glad to hear that you enjoy 'my programs' as well.

Thank you! Lovely piece. I was not familiar with it.
Thank you! Yes, it’s strangely quite unknown, but brilliant.
There is a version by Glenn Gould that is even slower than mine.
Sehr schöne Musik, danke!!
Vielen Dank! Ich freue mich, dass es dir gefällt.
Für ein schwaches Schicksal ist es besser, den Bass mehrmals in der tieferen Stimme zu spielen.

I don’t know why a beat of around 40 or 50 works best for Bach. A poetic, lyrical beauty comes up that feels rushed if played faster than that. And seeing the art and architecture, his own writings, at least his famous one for the Margrave, and the cantabile aspect of the music, sought-for in this particular collection, makes me believe it was closer to this than not.
In a time of so much formality, of a kind of sacred choreography of life, any faster is ridiculous. We want to make these people as postmodern constructs as we are? Don’t think so,
Thank you!
Yes! The cantable thing! A mechanical playing when practically no machines existed? But when voice was instantaneously associated with keyboard playing? Give me “slow” (in truth, common-sense) Bach any day and I’m in.
The one I like the most. ruclips.net/video/nKIP8gsAM_Q/видео.html
The speed I like. Maybe a little faster I prefer, but the range is there. Czerny in whole beat was, to me, wrong (Marx I’m sure was thinking in this one when he objected Carl’s edition). In any case, apparently C and ₵ were interchangeable in the Inventions editions; so a melody to me in 16ths tells me it should be slower than what Czerny said, as a weighty alla breve, which by use of the 16ths halves the tempo, for pure alla breve is just 8ths. Thank you; beautiful playing.
Thanks for the comment! I find it a bit slow too, but when I have to play the same E-flat with the left hand and then the right, plus an ornament, my instrument doesn’t respond well at a faster speed. 1:32 With two manuals, I could probably play it a bit quicker. It’s really a matter of practical limitations too. But, I don’t strictly follow Czerny’s tempo markings, since he added them almost a hundred years after Bach wrote the pieces. I use them as a reference, of course, but I have reasons to believe that even by Czerny’s time, they were already playing it faster than they would have in 1723. I prefer, of course, Czerny’s tempo over what's done today in most cases, but I imagine Bach conceived it slower than Czerny or Beethoven played it. I recommend this video of mine. Thanks again! ruclips.net/video/JmRcTcWFtUQ/видео.html
@@LangLangsam Eggs-actly! Schweitzer also said that Bach is better slower, while giving preposterous metronome speeds (which to me points to whole beat). And I also think that: they already played Bach way too fast at the XIXth. The same that has happened from the XIXth to today. The mechanical action of moving the fingers will naturally try to move faster in repeating itself through time. The polyphony is better slow! And some source by JG Walther also says that when no Italian indication is given, we must assume an adagio. It’s a common sense, aesthetic perception thing: to write all those details and still playing it faster? Don’t think so. So interesting to note that the harpsichord won’t respond well when too fast. I totally understand “where you are coming from”. And not because someone wrote something, but just because simply it all sounds naturally better (which explains also Bach’s lack of obligation to write a tempo word. And why music existed without an exacting measurement of time during centuries)
@@LangLangsam also explains why you have this many subscribers in less than a year. And yes, two-manual tools are necessary to revive. This one is a good example. Congratulations!
Thanks! I'm glad you prefer the music played slower than usual. Still, Lang Lang has way more subscribers than me, and he plays super fast! 🙂
@@LangLangsam There is something counter-productive and counter-intuitive, and, most importantly, fun-killing, in composing for many voices only to play them too fast! Any number like yours in classical is a success to me! People like this, but all the conventions make it difficult to admit it to ourselves.
Sounds different from what I've heard before. I guess it's because of the tempo. Doesn't run away from my thoughts. I like it! Keep going, it's a great experience to listen to your play.
Thank you for the comment! When you hear it slower than usual, you can really focus on the musical ideas and pick up on the details instead of just noticing the speed of the performer's fingers. I'm glad you like it!
