ESSENTIAL Gear Checklist for EVERY Gravel Ride
While up in Maine, visiting the Acadia National Park, I thought it might be a good idea to share my every ride carry for day-long gravel rides. This is a high level overview of the tools, bags, and accessories I like to bring along with me. It reflects function vs. weight savings and is a bit more robust than what I carry while road riding.

Vintage MTB vs. Flat Bar Gravel Bike
Просмотров 13 тыс.3 года назад
Since I built up my gravel bike with flat bars a couple of months ago, I’ve been getting questions about the differences between gravel bikes and vintage mountain bikes. I figured it would be useful to do a quick video highlighting these two bikes and share some of my opinions about why they aren't the same. One thing I wasn't able to touch on is the weight - we don't have a scale at home - but...

Can anything be done to put racks on a MTB with no eyelets anywhere? Or do you just have to make do with handlebar and saddle bags?
@@andrewash9318 it depends on what you are trying to carry, but for a lighter load you can try p-clamps. I think Velo orange sells their racks with them.
@@slimboykip Thanks! I will speak with them.
any chance you could tell me the tires on the second bike? the blue one with the slick tan walls.
@@ifffopfmn these were compass rat trap pass
@@slimboykip much appreciated. Those are exactly the tires I need. How's the puncture resistance on them compared to a Maxxis dth?
@@ifffopfmn they don’t have much puncture protection, but you can get them with the endurance casing. These tires are more about ride feel vs. durability.
Does anyone even tun Fender's anymore i have an 820 looks like a schwin and a huffy had a baby with a stainless steel fender
Haven't run fenders in a while but was huge when I commuted daily
Warn people about Suntour. If you want a Stock groupo Suntour can be pricy to find parts
For sure, certain vintage parts have gotten expensive especially if looking for NOS.
Is he really keeping it real? - Not with THOSE socks on. lol I would suggest that those interested in a vintage mtb buy a digital caliper to measure things before buying parts.
Why did you stop posting?
I started a new job that was pretty demanding but would like to start making again
Hey what kind of bike is the dark blue one you have? I’m really starting to get into the whole vintage mountain bike thing. I was also wondering if there would be a bike that is similar to it here in the United States?
Pls do the ali Express vid. It'd be interesting to see any frame bag from somewhere like that. Even wish or God forbid temu
What handlebar is that? Also, what 1970's x-rated movie did this music come from?
wow, thanks for the this video! I have an ALR5 and I keep wanting to ditch the drop bars. Any regrets or additional learnings after you did this?
Glad you found it helpful! Honestly, I liked it with the flat bar. It was such a versatile frame that you could try a lot of different setups. My only regret was selling it a couple of years ago.
What setup would you recommend to use to convert to 1x
Yep, steering and handlebars are one of the most important things to consider!
agreed!
have you ever done a build on a vintage frame with all brand new components? including bottom bracket, headset etc.
To be honest, I have not. Lately I'm enjoying riding newer bikes more than vintage ones.
This video rules
Was that a dynamo setup or was light hooked up to a battery?
I did this to my MTB in the early 90s after seeing Tomac racing with drop bars, I even did an MTB race with it like that
I got a GT Tequesta and I wish it had more bottom bracket drop. My toes can barely touch the ground. I guess I need a dropper post to use it for commuting.
What kind of quill stem is that on the hard rock if you don't mind me asking? Im building something hopefully similiar
Sorry to ask but what kind of stem is on the rocktop?
crust bikes bj stem
What skewers do you have on your Hardrock?
Pinhead locking skewers
hey man cool paul brakes
Thanks, bike frames have come and gone, but I’ve kept the Paul brakes
any difference in the way they ride?
how much does this bike weigh? Thanks
What is your roadrunner seat bag? They make great stuff.
It might be an older version of the drafter bag, but it doesn’t look like they offer this design anymore.
26 aint dead. Nice!👍👍👍
When the frame is completely rigid what make it a mountain bike? Just the space for wider wheels? I have a specialzied crossroads (which I think is a road style hybrid?) and am thinking of turning it into a gravel bike but am not sure what differences I should be aware of
Thanks for the question! Yes, you’re right - the crossroads is more of a road style hybrid or even a cross bike. The main distinctions would be wheel size, rear hub spacing, and the components. The crossroads has a 700c road wheelset with 130 rear spacing vs an mtb with 26 inch wheelset with 135 rear spacing. Hope this helps.
It's been 2 months now, how's the build going? On previous topics, I'll add that with steel frames dropout can be easily bent to accommodate this couple extra mms of modern hubs - I upgraded my 26er from 130mm to 135mm using RJ the Bike Guy video on cold setting as a guide, can recommend. Frames from that era were less specialized in their distinct bike setup use, thing common with modern bikes (road, gravel, touring, mtb, city, and more, all trying to accomodate new bike tech to do their narrow job as good as possible), so if compared bikes are overall all at least ok quality, they will be kinda simmiliar in geometry and possible usage despite various wheel sizes. If it fits tire size you desire to go offroad, they all will be ok - steel will withstand extra stress and being fully rigid probably will end the build as a bike for mostly lighter terrain, so even less abuse. On the other hand, there were also models sold as hybrids, but with tire space for non-existing at a time 53-55mm - now people gladly set them as rigid narrow 29ers, very cool.
"When you're like halfway through a projekt and you forget something, it can be so frustrating. But the main thing is, you just gotta stay patient. It's gonna work out. And it's a learning experience. So it's not a big deal." - Well said, man. Everybody who's done projects like these has felt the same frustration. The best thing about it: Mistakes make you a better mechanic! Absolutely.
Word - love this comment thanks!
Excellent. Glad the YT algorithm sent me here!
Thanks for stopping by!
Very nice work with the vintage MTB to gravel conversion. Though I'd advice to check at least the front brake cable and straddle setup, seems there's not much mechanical advantage and it hurts the brakes efficiency plenty. I see that the dynamo light's crown stem is a bit in the way, a classic problem, but is possible to solve with a suitable crown stem designed for cantilever (or other center pull) brakes use. You should get the straddle vertically as close to the tire as you dare, say 1,5-2,5cm distance should be fine (also taking care that the straddle doesn't rub on wider tires shoulders either), hence need to be able to route the main front brake cable through the crown stem to succeed. There are also modern cantilever brake cable holders that are mounted on the fork crown, but there's a chance that it eliminates the use of crown stem for lights. Search for Sheldon Browne cantilever mechanical advantage to learn more about it.
Thank you, I appreciate the suggestion. I agree, it's not ideal, however the braking performance is surprisingly good despite the large straddle cable. The other issue is that pull ratio on the levers is for linear pull v brakes and I'm running canti's, oh well! Currently, this frame is decommissioned but future projects will address these very issues. Thx
@@slimboykip Good to hear that it was the lesser or least of the problems there. I've had a v-brake lever on a canti brake in a city bike's front wheel (assembled by a LBS) and that time I wasn't educated enough to tell what was wrong, but the brake would work in on/off mode (15mm pull lever and 8mm pull brakes don't mix that well) without much braking power, like you also mentioned. So far I've done three vintage MTB to gravel ('ish at least) conversions, have direct pull v-brakes in one of them with dropbar brifters and Problem Solvers Travel Agent like pull converter which works fine. Pull converters can usually be also inverted for v-brake levers for use with linear or centerpull brakes. In two of my conversions I changed the old Shimano cantilever arms for new Tektro Oryx and Tektro CR720 cantilvers ones, which have clearance enough for 26" to 650B wheel conversion, at least if the cantilver pivots are at proper positions on the seat stays (forks didn't pose a problem, probably because seat stays have lock mounts welded on them at almost the same height as the pivots). All the best for the future vintage MTB projects, they're such educational projects and so much fun when you get everything working together for your rides. Along with these converions I have one vintage MTB that I've only upgraded slightly for those odd nostalgic MTB rides. Keep up the good work!
What is the stem on that bike? 31.8?
It’s a 31.8 clamp diameter, 35mm reach stem by crust bikes
doing a similar deal with a domane SL 2020 frame. Hope its a clean as yours. Nice work
Sick! Hope it rides awesome.
What bell is that?
Spurcycle, ding ding
Klay, is there a way we can contact you? Are you on Instagram?
Feel free to contact me here in the comments, I'll try my best to reply
The cables are not affected by the bag u installed there?looks like it comes on top of them.
Not really, I usually run the straps under the cables.
Maybe I missed it but... how wide are the tires?
They are wtb resolute 700x42
"When parts don't fit"........... 30 years later of builds you end up with a parts inventory that puts most bike shops to shame............ now, if they only fit something I own LOL. Did the drop bar on an '88 GT Karakoram a few years back, loved it and still have it. I have several vintage road and mountain bikes but the Karakoram gets ridden the most.
Very cool - these bikes currently look different now too - swapped the drops to the purple one. It’s fun to ride different setups on old bikes.
Hey, whats that stem on the specialized? Really like it, an how wide are the bars?
Hey - stem is from crust bikes and Nitto, it’s a 35mm length with a 31.8 clamp. Pretty sure the bars are 42mm wide
Let's see a full review on that 26er! Rad looking build. Great video
Will do - it’s actually set up with drop bars right now, lol! Thanks for checking it out
Those brake levers (theoretically)do not match the cantilever brakes. They are m950s and meant for v-brakes. They have a different cable pull ratio. That is why you would need to use much more force to get the bike to actually brake. I tried that before, wasn't satisfied. Maybe try using the older M900 STIs? They are 8x though. I would be interested if there is actually any difference between the 700c and the 26" wheels. I can not imagine that. Especially, if you convert the 26" to tubeless. You can also get a different fork to fit a disk brake or even a bigger front wheel. I have a 26" titanium frame that I put 28" roadbike wheels in. (XTR hubs and Mavic MA2 rims) I use a brake stud adapter in the rear and a 28" fork up front. 1.35 knobby tyres. That thing flies!
That’s a good point. I have since switched to short pull levers with those specific brakes and it’s a big difference.
Where's part III?! The suspense...
Oh shoot, I gotta get on that. It’s been a while!
This might be the best idea ever, flat bars on a gravel bike for less "roadie" riders and more comfort! Soo good😉👌👌
I hear you - sometimes you don’t need a full on mtb but you want that comfort and stability
Linda 👏👏 parabéns pra você 👏 top baik🇧🇷
Thank you!
i love this bike
Awesome, thanks!
Always loved triples, even with this trend of 1x systems. What's the cassette gearing?
It’s funny you mention it - I’m moving almost completely away from 1x, except for strict off-road setups. The cassette is an 11-34 8spd sram.
Faggin lol! Why a Minion on front? Extreme overkill imo
Stem bags … who knew! Just what I’m looking for to carry a camera and other stuff. Thanks!
I love mine - happy riding
Amazing bike 👏👏
Thanks - happy riding!
This sentiment is exactly why I built up a rigid log lady.
Damn, those are sweeeet
Just a note. Electrical tape does not elevate the looks of anything.
Noted!
I ordered the Ritchey Kyote to replace the flat bar that replaced my drop bars. The wrist angle on the flat bar caused problems on a long ride.
How do you like the Kyote?
@@slimboykip Just got them installed Saturday. I haven't taken them on a long ride yet but I'll update soon.
@@slimboykip Finally got to take the bike out with the Kyote bars. I liked them over the flat bar. I put Profile design Boxer Bars in between the grips close to the curve and that offered a different had position. I still got a little hand numbness at around 15 miles but not as bad as the curve bars or flat bars.
