Don't Follow Trends... The Path To Mediocrity
This video tells some of The Petrol List back story, some of my car passion and lessons learned from doing this content creation experiment I started a year and some change ago. I thought I was different from other "content creators, but last week, I learned that I'm just as susceptible to number chasing as anyone else. It was a fascinating enough introspection that I decided to make this video about it. It's loosely car related but what's more than that is there are things to be learned from all the stuff we do... Even the stuff we think we're just doing for fun.

F1: Garage Talk Part 2 - The Hamilton Gamble

Lewis Hamilton discussion begins at minute 3 Part 2 of 2: Commitment to F1 in my opinion seems to be similar to being in the military. The scrutiny, uniform, physical and mental tolls are enormous. 0.3 seconds behind Max is a lot. It should improve as seat time increases, but still… that’s a lot. Yuki tested well, but… looking back at his history, he has a mouth and temper on him. That lack of professionalism could factor into things. Yes, drivers must be passionate. However, they also need to be classy… particularly until they have proven themselves as being elite. Yuki has yet to do that.

    • @thepetrollist
      @thepetrollist 12 дней назад

      You bring up great points. Only one driver per top 5 team is allowed to have a mouth. And it’s gotta be the primary driver. Otherwise, it’s probably best to drive well and wait for your opportunity. That said, Hadjar may have already put his foot in his mouth career wise.

  • @nemagem
    @nemagem 14 дней назад

    I don’t think Hadjar will get a chance over Yuki in terms of a promotion to the senior team if temperament is what gave Liam the win over Yuki. I don’t think RB wants to deal with 2 hot head drivers at a time. You already have Max, they don’t want a Max 2.0 personality 😅 They just need a strong #2 who can stay calm through it all. A Botas vs Hamilton type combo

    The penalty to Lando seemed harsh when viewing the real time footage from the cockpit and when it flashed - but I didn’t see if his team radioed in to lift or if he lifted at the immediate site of the next “yellow”. Is that not something the Stewards have to see real time ? at the end of the day it seemed to be that they ( Stewards) wanted to send a message to not just Lando, but to every driver.

    • @thepetrollist

    Bro the Shoey is totally a thing. Rookie rugby season after my first game team captain took off his boot, we poured a guniess into it and I had to shoot the boot. Its tradition and gross, and cool.That is all to say. Its real and raw and cool he did it. It draws in guys like me that prefer a little more visceral feel to my sports. It says something. Not sure what, but I feel it.

    • @thepetrollist
      @thepetrollist 3 месяца назад

      I had no idea about the shoey lol. Thanks for that bit of knowledge. Yea, without the personalities and character, the sport will only ever appeal to guys in lab coats and venture capitalists. Wasn’t always like that, but somewhere along the way, that’s what formula one turned into. These characters pull the sport back down to earth… where the sport belongs if it wants to succeed.

    You nailed it, Brother! Daniel brought so much more than his driving ability to the F1 scene. His contagious smile and positive attitude were (are) so lovable. He is the ultimate nice guy. You have Alonso… skilled behind the wheel, but he is the great “old guy” for the sport. Hamilton - again, great skill, but his ink and fashion attract a ton of fan base to F1. Max can drive, but he is also has that odd way about him, yet speaks well. I could go on and on with many more drivers, but you get it. If the sport ends up just plugging in the young guns (that come with their paid sponsorships 💰) it will end up not having a deep rooted fan base. F1 will always be around and have a large audience, but if they want to really to grow, they need to tap into the characters of the drivers. As long as they are still competitive, the teams should try to keep them onboard. Time will tell what comes of things. As for 2025… I’m pulling for Alonso and Sainz to have great seasons! Love to see what Colapinto does, as well. Semper Fi!

    • @thepetrollist
      @thepetrollist 3 месяца назад

      You’re spot on. Peter Windsor, one of the great minds in F1 commentary say that F1 is a very human sport. I totally agree. Without the personalities, we’re just watching unrealistic cars driving in an unrealistic road. Add the personal element and all of the sudden it’s real people doing extraordinary things. The established drivers are critical to the sport, and even when it’s time for them to go, they should be given an honorable send off. If not, for them… for the fans.

      Hey thanks. Yea, it took me a long time to finally arrive at that point. Mercedes with Toto Wolff, Hamilton and Bottas was just amazing. Regarding the concern about vulgar language… They should just delay the audio broadcasting by a few seconds and “bleep” it likes been done forever on TV, radio, etc. If you are paying for a service that allows you to listen “live”, then you will get the unedited audio - good and bad - just like we do with UFC fights and the like. All that being said, I tend to use Michael Schumacher as the bar to which I measure other drivers in the car. He very rarely got vulgar because he was such a committed driver. He’d just hit his marks, think about strategies and DRIVE. No reason to cuss up a storm or vent. Not at that level. It’s business, and your job is to drive. I think a lot of it is these drivers are so young these days. Hard to fence in the hormones of those young guns! Overall, they do a fine job. If they slip up, let the teams deal with it. If nothing else, their own PR folks will tell them their mouths may impact their sponsorship… and their money. That’s all they really need - the reminder if and when they mouth off. Let ‘em race. 👍

    • @thepetrollist
      @thepetrollist 3 месяца назад

      I agree 100%. I don’t cuss much now, but 24 year old me did. I think the fans and sponsors should decide what they want to put up with and yes, let the networks bleep and delay per usual. I prefer athletes that can get the job done without swearing, but it’s up to me to support or not support folks based on whatever personal criteria I have 👍🏾

      @@thepetrollist Good point about you today vs. you years ago. You’ll appreciate this Brother… I was stationed at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, and just after the Desert Storm, I got pulled from my platoon (TOW Platoon, 4th Marine Regiment) to work for the SgtMaj (Frank C. Munden - incredible Marine and man). Anyway, I spent a lot of time around him. He would often boot me out of his office when he had to chew into Staff NCO’s, but I would just stand outside his door and listen to the conversation (1-way, for sure). One time, our Gunny came out practically in tears from getting a serious ass-whooping. Fast forward a bit, and I was in his office and I was kind of taking to myself about something and a swore. Probably something like, “Ah fuck, why did I just do that?” He stopped what he was doing and said, “Boy, why do you use vulgarity? Vulgarity is a sign of ignorance - it’s what you use when you can’t think of something more intelligent to say.” I realized that I had NEVER heard him swear - ever. He made senior NCO’s tremble and come to tears, put fear into young infantry Jarheads, was a decorated Vietnam War hero with kills under his belt. Yet… he never swore. I’ll tell you what - and this is the God’s honest truth - I stopped swearing that moment, and probably for about a good 2 years. His words made so much sense. I probably need to get back on that train of thought and way of living. I don’t swear often, but you have to ask… do I ever really need to? I did it on my own as a 20-something Marine. Surely I could do it as a mid-50’s grown man. I could certainly have done it if my employer told me to, while earning millions of dollars. 😁.

BTW, I did a year on “The Rock” as we said in my time lol. I was at Camp Courtney. We’d go up to Camp Schwab when we wanted to stop feeling sorry for ourselves 😂😂😂. I agree that the Perez/Sainz crash was ultimately a racing incident. However, I think Sainz put them in the compromising position by trying to get past Leclerc too soon. Had he just followed Leclerc until a better passing situation came about (with Leclerc’s tires being toast, I’m pretty certain Sainz would have found opportunities to make the pass). That being said, I also think Perez could have yielded ever so slightly to his left, as he had at least two car widths of room. To me, Sainz was simply driving the normal racing line (watch the replays, and pay attention to Leclerc’s line - it is a natural, slow drift from the right hand exit of that turn, to the left side of the track), and with Perez slightly behind - and having a great view of his own right front tire and Sainz’ left rear tire - all he had to do was concede just a hair. But as you said, I think Perez was trying to force Sainz to stay to the right. In the end, they both got screwed. Oh well, life goes on. Colapinto! What an incredible drive! Even without the crash, he was going to finish in the points - and managing to keep Hamilton behind him… impressive. I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I have not been a fan of Hamilton. However, he is growing on me of late. He is arguably the best F1 driver of all time, and I cannot do anything but respect and appreciate many of his recent actions. Most recently, him sincerely congratulating Colapinto on his racing. For a 7-time World Champion to do that after having a rather crappy race… that shows class.

    • @thepetrollist
      @thepetrollist 3 месяца назад

      Yea, I think ultimately Perez and Sainz both participated in a game of chicken that didn’t end well for them and I hope in the future they both give each other space and respect. In contrast, it was incredible to see Piastri and LeClerc race so hard without compromising their cars or one another’s safety. It’s a great example for the rest of the grid tbh. The rookies are giving me a lot of hope for F1’s future. And yea, I think LH is a character that can both draw folks in or drive folks away (outfits, politics etc). But as a pure driver and his accomplishments it’s hard to argue his 🐐 status. Then adding on his steadfastness despite his Mercedes woes as well as great treatment of up and coming drivers he’s been top tier. As always, thanks for the strong comments. Semper!

    Big ups bro, another fine review, but to be honest, F1 has exposed itself for what it really is, namely a show with a storyline, pretending to be the pinnacle of motor sport. F1 is using Sky sports F1 and countless social media influencers to sell fans an illusion. This illusion is becoming more ridiculously insane to uphold, to the point of the storyline being improvised to highlight a aging designer, who should long have been retired and enjoying his pension, to spice up the show. I used to follow F1 as a teenager, left during the Schumacher/Ferrari episodes, returned when Hamilton was initiated into the show, left after Abu Dhabi 21. It became apparently clear after the 2021 season, that for decades F1 was never a sport, but showbiz exhibiting the state of the art technology, coupled with camera wizadry, to lure alpha male sport adicts to the brand of F1. The show, drivers, engineers, team principles are convincingly presented as modern day gladiators, all competing to win the holy grail at the end of a season, the prestigious world driver championship, a prize that has been decided well before the season began, we were only all but deluded to perceive it. Stop wasting your time bro, seek something else satisfying to spend your time. Grace and Peace.

    I get not “gifting” Norris the WDC by team ordering Piastri to hand him the position. But I don’t know why McLaren wouldn’t want the prestige of winning BOTH Constructors and WDC 🤷🏾‍♀️ And McLaren having “2 number 1 drivers” is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard 😅

    Semper Fi, Brother. Another great debrief and summary. Have to say, it’s nice to have so many drivers now in a position to possible win (or at least podium) these races. Much more exciting. And how about Colapinto?! 12th? Sargeant’s best finish was 11th this season, and most were much further back. So we’ll have to keep an eye on his progress. Also be curious to see where Logan’s career takes him… Indycar? WEC? Formula E? F1 didn’t work out, but you don’t get to F1 without skill (and money, of course). Cheers.

      Hey thank man! Comment much appreciated. Yea , it would be interesting to see what ex F1 drivers do when their careers end early. Could be a video topic if I can find the info (and the time).

    Hey, what does pointing/touching the rear view mirror mean? Never seen that before.

    • @thepetrollist
      @thepetrollist 4 месяца назад

      Hey, sorry I missed this comment. The mirror touching is just saying “hey, I see you”. Then I have to gauge whether or not that driver’s pass will stick. No use in a pass if I’m just going to fight you in the next turn (Track day rules vs racing rules). Point by is “you have enough speed to where when you pass, I will not catch you and you won’t ruin my laps. Thanks!

    This reminds me of the last time Red Bull got accused of something and at the next race their lead was even greater. I bet it’s a Mercedes powered team who’s cheating. Gonna laugh my ass off if Mercedes and McLaren suck big time next race 😂

    The original wording of the rule "The brake system must be designed so that within each circuit, the forces applied to the brake pads are the same magnitude and act as opposing pairs on a given brake disc." talks about each caliper seperatly. Meaning there was nothing stopping teams from applying different brake pressures side to side. The new wording of the rules does prohibit this. So redbull shouldn't be given a fine or a point reduction. This is basically the FIA saying "clever, now stop it."

      I have to say I agree with you. Objectively there’s truly nothing else to be done. It can raise subjective conversations all day, but they are just that. Conversations and opinions. Thanks for the comment!

      Assymetric braking has been banned for decades, what are you on about?

      @robinfoster7597 Thanks for the comment! It has been banned. It just looks like the FIA needed to ban it harder lol 🤷🏾‍♂️

      @bambyscott I accidentally removed your last post referring to the McLaren 3rd pedal. I was actually trying to remove a duplicate post of my own. Please repost if you like.
