It is an absolute crime that you didn’t mention Dave Niehaus’ best and most iconic call of all time. The greatest moment in Mariners history, one that saved the team and saved baseball in Seattle. Edgar’s double in the 1995 ALDS. It is absolutely unbelievably perfect. I loved the podcast but the fact you didn’t mention it at all makes me question lots of things…

My first time to the Coliseum I was eight years old and it was April of 1968, NY vs Oak. Micky Mantle homered in the first and the A's walked it off in 11. My parents were from Philly and their first date was an A's game in 1948. My Mom's first time to Shibe Park was 1936, her all time favorite A's player was Wally Moses. My brother worked for the organization at the Coliseum in the mid 80's to mid 90's. By that time I had moved to Alaska, but I always made it down to the Coliseum for World Series and Grateful Dead New Years runs. I snuck into the 89 World Series by going through the front office with my brother, shaking Sandy Alderston's hand along the way (the Haas family, now those were owners). I raised two A's fans in Alaska by being their LL & HS Baseball umpire/coach and taking them to a week of Spring Training games every March for a decade 96 to 06. I've watched damn near every A's game since streaming has been a thing, and before that we used to get the A's on TV sometimes on Sundays, the highlight being watching Dallas Braden's perfect game with my son or taking both my kids to the Bar to watch the 20 wins in a row. I took off work for Game 162. I made my last trip to the Coliseum in May, for the Texas series, finishing off with a Double Header sitting in Sec. 119 at the top of the A's tunnel. A's games, Raiders games,, Day On The Greens and then Warriors games, concerts and New Years Grateful Dead runs next store. I always hoped that the Coliseum would have become the Fenway of the cookie cutter era. Now all of that has to come to an end because of one man. FJF

My two favorite moments at the Coliseum were Fan Appreciation Day 1988 when the whole stadium drowned out Roy Steele when he announced Jose Canseco in the starting lineup, and two years later Aug 15 of 1990 when Mark McGwire launched a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Red Sox, at a time when Oakland and Boston were running into each other in the ALCS every year.

It’s virtually impossible for the Lugnuts to ever win a championship. I can’t recall the last time they even almost made the playoffs.

With 86 Mets winning division call, it was Steve Sabrieszki was the play by play man. Kind of the 3rd string WWOR CH 9 guy, locally along with Ralph Kiner & Tim McCarver at that time but neither Tim or Ralph was with Steve there. The other voice there was Rusty Staub "13 years of waiting".

I sure wish we could get the games back on regular radio.

Actually, I was at Rickey Henderson's first game back with the A's in 1989 and it was on a Thursday. Back then, ABC broadcast games on Thursdays.

Wikipedia is very drunk. In 1980, only the World Series was national exclusive. So that footage from Game 5 of NLCS was indeed the actual live broadcast from WPHL which was the Phillies affiliate, not a recreation.. Game also was carried by WPVI, which is the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia. The game was also allowed on the local radio, so Harry and Andy Musser would switch from TV and radio in the middle innings. Also, the cackling at the end was actually McCarver as Richie Ashburn had gone down to the clubhouse for post game interviews. McCarver had been put on the active roster in September so he could become the first player to play in 4 different decades I believe, I guess being part of their late season battle had him quite giddy. Hope this information is helpful coming from a life long Phillies fan. I will also unashamedly admit to being in tears the day Harry passed away at Nationals Park. He would be having a blast calling this current Phillies team Im sure.

The BBC call was actually my favorite for the reasons you discuss as you analyze it in detail. He set the moment, he built the excitement as the ball went deep, he talked about the stakes, about the Rangers failure to close out, how Freese had been clutch all post-season.

Chris is 24 years old but given his lineage and his ability to critique his grandfather and his great grandfather, its obvious he has true talent for announcing and he's doing a fabulous job with the Athletics
