It is one of my very favourite pieces of music and the text couldn't have been more apt for the t...

Fantastic lesson and a eureka moment for me , my hand is short and old (70) this will help no end 😊
So very helpful. I play a 4/4. I have a 2” pinky and 4” wide hands. They are arthritic as well. I have learned C.Harvey’s shifting exercises to be able to not hurt my fingers. Your use of the arm to extend the reach and support the fingers is wonderful. So hard to get the 4th finger in tune when I play the 2nd finger in first position. I have been shifting to do it and to do the B flat in first. It’s easier in the upper positions with the fingers closer. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! This has been really helpful!!
Wow, thank you, your videos are so helpful! However- as soon as I move my thumb, my first finger glides away. 🫤 And also my wrist goes up when I move my thumb and my hand hurts which is never a good sign. Not sure what I can do here.
Learning how to move around like this great but how about when we need to stretch chords? Bach suite 4 sarabande for example
This is helpful.
🙏 Thank you!
Hi Julia, thank you for doing one of these again. In Meditation (Thais), bar 32 and 33, I'm seeing F naturals and Es (4th position on A string). But vast majority of recordings play these Fs and Es one octave down on D string. I only found one recording where it plays as written. What's the story behind these bars?
The answer is very simple: the piece wasn't written for the cello, so there are lots of different arrangements out there! :-)
Hi. What are your favourite cello strings? Do you mix and match or stay with just one brand?
It depends entirely on the instrument! On my Boullangier (my main concert instrument), I play Larsen Il Cannone on all four strings. On my old English cello, I play a mixture of 'normal' Larsen on the A and D and Spirocore Tungsten on G and C. It involves a lot of experimentation and ultimately comes down to what you need for your specific circumstances. For my purposes, playing a lot of solo and chamber music, I look for power and projection, but without ever losing the warmth in the sound.
Hi Julia. Very helpful videos! I have a tiny hand and pinky (and have watched your video about this). Still, I have a difficult time making a legato sound due to a large amount of shifting (due to hand size) and wondered if you have any further advice about how to make a smoother sound. Thank you.
Great question!
Thank you so much for that video. I was beginning to despair wondering whether cello was the right instrument for me. I play a 7/8 cello after a full size cello was torture. Just a quick question. How would you suggest to play the D major scale on the C string? It’s absolutely impossible for me to stay on the D with my first finger and play the F# with my fourth finger. Is that an extension I don’t need to hold? That would make me life so much easier! Thanks again!
The only time I hold an extension is when I need to play an actual double stop!
I'm currently working on (struggling with) spiccatto. That might be interesting to get your take. I will also be soon moving on to my first Bach Suite piece; which one is still TBD from my teacher. Any general advice on how to approach learning those might be good as I expect this will be a "big" step up from the repertoire in the Suzuki books(currently at the end of #5)
(And by way of a p.s: you gave me a really detailed answer last year about why i couldnt get my corrections to "stick", you talked about slowing down, dialing in the new "data" and treating my brain like a computer which is only as good as the data entry. Its taken a long time to turn that ship around and fully digest what you said but Its been hugely helpful and my practice is alot more focussed. So valuable. So thank you!
By spiccato, do you mean fast as in Elgar Concerto 2nd movement or generally playing off the string? I am asking because there are different definitions of the term, especially between the UK and the US. :-)))
@@juliamorneweg5416 Generally playing off the string.
Hey Julia, welcome back!! Id be keen to get some ideas about how to speed up my left hand...and perhaps this goes hand in hand (haha)..but also your thoughts on how and how heavily the fingers hit the finger board. Thanks!
Great question, video is definitely coming on this!
Thank you Julia. I needed to see this! My left thumb hurts and now I have hope to continue cello. ❤ Sending love from an American living in Japan.
Thank you very much for all your videos. I would love to have a clarification/explanation on what is the position of the thumb in the 5th-6th-7th positions. These are not neck positions and not thumb positions, so I am having hard time find a position that feels stable and well-grounding. Thank you.
Brilliant question! This Q&A answer touches on it, but I'll make a specific video for these positions: ruclips.net/video/JYW4to3j_MM/видео.htmlsi=GCTFmzSHZhkaCBsx&t=3411
@@juliamorneweg5416 Amazing. I am looking forward to watching the video about these positions! Thank you very much again!
Oh my god thank you. I know my teacher as probably told me this before but it never made sense until now. I’ll definitely try that
Is there a reason why ‘professional’ cellists invariably start vibrato after placing and sounding a note?
There are places where one might make a conscious musical choice to do so, but if it happens constantly, it's simply a bad technical habit! :-)
Have always suffered with tiny hands. It is true that your hands look a normal size to me. However this is interesting. I’ve heard from a number of sources that the elbow is where the strength and power of the fingers originates.
Invaluable explanation and demonstration. I’ve been struggling with bow direction changes for years and will attempt to replicate/assimilate the finer points of this video. Possible negative contribution from visual fixation on the hand in the mirror while the arm actually drives the motion. Thank you. ❤
Fantastic masterclass. It has helped me a lot. Thanks for taking the time in producing such a good work. I am horrified by after more than 1000 views at the time of writing this 21aug24 there are only 27 likes and 1 comment. Come on people, if you are making use of the video please make some effort of at least give it a like.
Hello Julia! Very much appreciate your generous help! I’m curious to know if you have some thoughts for the tall cellist….in particular, proper parallel bowing on the C string, and the others too, of course! I find that my right wrist has to form. 45 degree angle, which feels extreme! Thank you again for all that you do!!!!
Based on your bow hold guideline, that means if comparing the finger power of holding a mark cup and a bow, the power of holding a bow should be lower that holding cup, right? Even playing a hard piece of concerto, there is no much power on fingers. is my understanding correct?
Hello Julia, thanks for these precious tips ?I have a problem, my 4th and 3rd fingers are almost glued together and I can 't have a nice space between them. Therefore the alignement is never correct. Would you have any suggestions for this problem ? Thanks for your answer !! ❤
Julia Morneweg This applies to the CodaBow Joule for Cello too.
The contact points thing helped me a lot. For several months I struggled a lot with the bow hold because I was focusing on where the tips of my fingers should lay. It never matched what I saw on video (because of the size of my fingers) and was very uncomfortable. But focusing on putting the bow in the "crease" of my middle finger changed everything. Thank you !
I would really LOVE to see some teaching videos on the popper etudes. My son is working through op. 76 now, but he doesn’t get any instruction on what the teaching points are or what he should focus on. It’s just “learn another line”.
Another thought, perhaps you could go through the op 73 book and explain the main teaching points of each (or your favorite) etudes. That way students watching can trouble shoot their technique by practicing an etude that focus on the point that they want to work on. I’ve just ordered the book by Mat that you recommended. It sounds like he describes his teaching points, which is so helpful. It would be nice to have this sort of overview for the popper etudes.
Hi Evelyn! Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. The Popper Studies are on my list of videos to create (hopefully this summer). Unfortunately, I barely manage to record anything while the concert season and academic year are in full swing from September to June. In the meantime, I'd be very happy to work with your son online if you'd like some targeted help. Feel free to drop me a message via my website. J
Julia, I asked my Mom if I could take the mirror off the wall in the downstairs bedroom and I put it up against the wall in my home’s kitchen. It is very narrow. It helps
Julia, I have had 5 private cello lessons, not all the way through Suzuki book one yet, purchased Suzuki book two, have been to four rehearsals with my community strings group. When should I begin working on vibrato? Thank you.
Hi Sarah! That's a LOOONG way off still if you've only just started. As a guide, I start vibrato with my students once the right hand sound production and left hand shape are absolutely settled and all the neck positions have been learned. On average, we are looking at anywhere between 18 months and 2 years (sometimes more, depending on the age and ability of the student) to master all of the above. At the very outset, the top priority is the bow as that's the foundation of everything. Check out my videos on bow hold, straight bow, bow changes etc - they should get you onto the right path quickly. Good luck!
This video saved my sons playing. Can’t thank you enough.
Merci beaucoup 😊
I'm absolutey sure this process will upgrade my vibrato !!! Thank's a lot !!!🙏🏿🌷
Very valuable tip. I'll pay more attention to my arm !!!👏🏿❤🎶🌷
This is a really excellent educational video!
Thank you for your suggestions which I will be trying. I have a question… at 19.07 of your video, for example, your pinky is flat at the first knuckle and bent only at the second, at the tip. Mine does the same. I cannot keep that finger curved but in my case it hurts. That finger aches constantly. (I am an older beginner.) How is it you play proficiently like that and yet it probably does not hurt? Do you have any suggestions to avoid that finger flattening?
Don't worry about that! Go with what your finger naturally does. Mine clicks and locks at the middle joint and there's nothing I can do about it. The only thing you need to worry about with regard to the fourth finger is that you really shift the full arm weight onto it for maximum support. Good luck!
This is a second visit as I have noticed with my new bowing that it is at times not 90° to the strings. Now to practice...🍧🌹
Along with a new bridge came a new bowing and bow hold....from intermediate student to...doh! 🍧🌹

No one ever mentions that each finger has its own vibrato because of where it is located in the hand. First finger vibrato is different from second, and so on. The oscillation is mainly the first joint of the finger, but that’s trickier with first than with second or third. And ummmm… it’s not difficult, you just need to relax, and if you relax the vibrato will usually begin by itself. Beautiful cello, btw…
Thank you!!!!!!
Thank you for your honesty. We are not alone after all...🍧🌹,
Another gem. I am concentrating on baroque ( I heard The Brandenberg Comcertos aged 5 and a more than a little Bach orientated) which as you know does not use vibrato...still, it is a fundamental technique and well worth practicing even though I will be trilling. 🍧🌹

April 2024 - three months on from a lay off of one month was difficult and painful to recondition my left hand. Still residue discomfort in 3rd & 4th as well the 1st finger extension. Many thanks for your tutorial. 🌹
I have this problem periodically on the A string. Great tutorial. 🌹
This helped me sooo much thank you!
❤️
I’m an adult learner who is left-handed and really struggling with bow hold. Does being left-handed make it more difficult, as my right hand is much weaker. Any tips? Fab video by the way 😊
I don't know about the left hand. But I'm right handed and the bow hold is definitely a big struggle for me.
It doesn't make a huge amount of difference in my experience. Bow hold simply takes time. As I'm saying in the video, it will initially 'melt' hundreds of times. The key here is to diligently start the process I'm showing all over again every time that happens. (Don't try to become faster at it - only better!) With time, you'll notice that the intervals between the meltdowns become longer and longer as you build the necessary muscles.
@@juliamorneweg5416 thank you so much for reply 😊
Great video, I was almost ready to give up. My short fingers have been causing me a lot of stress. I kept pushing through with the pain in the hands trying to ignore it. I will diffidently try these tips.
