Open dialogue can be a combination of both listening and understanding - which is different from agreeing. It is possible for the mature mind to understand something and disagree at the same time. Often we disagree over the positions that people present on an issue. Positions often are someone’s proposed solution to an issue. It is rare for there to be only one solution to any complex issue. Differing solutions generally arise because different people will have different interests (hopes, beliefs, values, etc. about their wellbeing) related to an issue, and will have differing priorities on these interests. Progress can be made when the dialogue focuses on understanding the “interests”, and avoids evaluating the “positions”. Frequently people will understand that they share “common interests”. Building solutions from these common interests is a good place to start building collaborative common positions.
