Great video! I'm from the USA I collect 4k bluray and DVD looking forward to more videos!
I really enjoyed this video. Loved your thoughts and your rankings. I love Hanukkah on Rye and will definitely check out the other ones.
Glad you liked it! Doing these raking vids is a lot of fun, but it takes a while to get enough together for it, lol!
A common criticism of this movie is that Robert Taylor and even Deborah Kerr (?!?) were weaker actors than the Peter Ustinov as Nero, Patricia Laffan as Poppaea and John Ruddock as Chilo. This is unfair. Antagonist roles are was going to be better than the protagonist roles. It does not matter who you cast as the Protagonist. If the actor playing any of these three antagonists does not outshine Humphrey Bogart playing Marcus Vinicius, you need a different actor. The actors for Nero, Poppaea and Chilo were all wonderfully cast and played. Leo Gunn, wonderful.
"If you are going to show lions you have to show them a lot, because they cost a lot of money." Yes, Hollywood movies were a lot better before the lions were able to form their own unions.
A great campaign slogan for Trump. "Worse than Nero? Perhaps. But not as bad as Caligula." After all, he did not propose to make his horse the Attorney General of the United States.
Translation is truly an art: preserving the meaning, rhythm (especially in things written in meter), and flow generally. I have a translation of Faust from the 19th Century-And its forward talks about all the poor translations before, and how it is an art to translate, one that thankfully English lended itself to, in terms of preserving the flow of the original German.
Indeed! The translator needs to be a BETTER writer than the original author, and if that is Goethe or Dickens, than you have quite a lot to live up to! ... I really want a good Faust movie... I know there is a famous opera, but I really would like a movie....
I remember I didn't care for this the first time I saw it: now it's one of my favorite Disney movies. Like Pamela below, I had no idea it was based on a book series. This was fun to watch.
Some movies need time to grow on you, loll! Glad ypu liked the review!
This was a great dive into the movie. It's been decades since I last saw Yentl, but now I want to re-watch it with this in mind. Really good job!
Highly recommend rewatching; it is gorgeous! Glad you liked the review!
Great review. I loved book very much. I thought of watching movie, thanks to you i will not 😂
LOL! Yeah, probably watch Ten Commandments (1956) for better Egyptians than this one!
FOTRE is my all time fave film. It's not historically accurate, but is superbly acted, and well put together. Gladiator? - the less said the better.
Hmm, I can't find 'Fotre'... I may need more info... Gladiator, yeah agreed. But for a lot of people it's the first introduction to ancient Rome.
It seems to me that the lines that connect Mary Poppins to Bedknobs and Broomsticks could easily be continued to Harry Potter (although the latter has quite lost the Disney feel😁).
I didnt realize Bedknobs was a book series. Time to bother my local library lol
This film is one of my favourites of all time and listening to you chat about it for an hour made me so happy! I think you touched on so many nuanced parts of what makes this movie so timeless. You look at it through a modern lens while also highlighting the social and economical contexts of the play and film so well. I so appreciated how in depth you went regarding the relationship dynamics of each coupling, particularly the class relations and the treatment of disability in film. I think how to marry a millionaire absolutely holds up to a feminist reading! It was so clearly made with such love and care from the acting and direction to the score to the set design and costumes, I'm even a sucker for the 6minute opening!! Thank you so much, I've subscribed and look forward to watching more in the future (also would love a whole video about the philadelphia story). I think you're both just creamy!
So wonderful to hear from you! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed our analysis, delving deeply into the aspects of this movie. I agree it holds up to a feminist lens! There's so much more in this film than the 'comedy' status that it tends to get. We have The Philadelphia story on our list, for sure! If you have any other suggestions, we always want to hear them! Thank you for subscribing! We hope to bring you many fun reviews.
In her memoir published in 2023 “My Name Is Barbra” she devotes two chapters to: Funny Girl on Broadway, and : Funny Girl in Hollywood. Thanks for the review I enjoyed it.👍🏻☮️💟😊🙏🏻🌎
Thank you for watching! Thanks for that tip! We haven't read Barbra's memoir yet. I'm also interested in what she writes about Yentl. That was an amazing and very special movie.
@@twopeoplesopinion You’ll love her book… she included three chapters on Yentl. It’s truly an excellent memoir. I have the audiobook version and it’s 48hrs and 17min long. It could’ve been longer and I wouldn’t have complained since I am a devoted fan of Barbra’s now for many yrs. Hope you’ll enjoy her entire memoir in the near future. I have listened numerous times to favorite chapters. Btw, it is narrated by Barbra herself. 👍🙂
@@bdpaquin1689 That sounds totally awesome! And in her own voice too, that's the dedication that goes right along with her entire carreer. I will look into it! If you love Barbra, we also have a review on Yentl on the channel, that we recently posted. Which movie of hers would you recommend we cover in the future? We're always interested in recommendations. Thank you!
The doorman was letting in the owner of the apartment. The girls were only leasing it.
So... a completely unrelated man can just walk in on 3 single young ladies, at a no notice, just because he owns the place? Would you still find that acceptable if it was a dad in his own house barging into his teen-daughter announced, just cause he owns the place? It's improper, and inappropriate. Especially in the 1950s. Schatze wouldn't even talk the leasing agent without a clearly open door. Currently, what he did is straight up illegal; owner must give 48 hours notice before wanting to come inside, whatever the reason.
This is a movie a fictional story a comedy from the 50s. It’s not real. It’s a story for entertainment purposes. Nothing violent about it it’s not real good grief.
Unrelated to everything, this soundtrack is so important to me. It was the gateway drug for me to other musicals. My opinion on this argument though is that she is not a transman. I feel like you are pushing the 'agenda' on this and it's not that deep. Her character never comes off saying that she feels like a male. The narriative is not that she feels like a man inside. She does this because she's a scholar and scholarly pursuits are not available to her as a woman. Slapping a 'non-binary' or 'trans' label implies mental illness. Her follies with the marriage, ect and how deep she got into things was because she was in love. This is a pretty typical story archetype for a lot of fictional stories, especially period pieces because doors were closed to women. Shield of Three Lions, Mulan ect. As a society, we are quick to jump on the trans train when this story is solely about her wanting to be a scholar and it was filmed in a time when we were not evaluating this nonsense.
Problem is that the original story is about a transman, and Streisand chose to change that, and we're talking about why, and how that choice looks now.
Loved this!
The first female kiss on screen was probably done in the 1910s or 20s
You're probably right; the 20s were crazy! 😆
I’ve been trying to see it on UTube but it’s never available.I’d be over the moon if I could see it. Thank you so much for your recomendations.
Ionce you have seen Hobsosn’s choice you never forget it. It remains in your mind and heart as a prime classic
I will always miss David Soul he was an awesome actor and singer he was my very first crush. I was watching Starkey and hutch when I see him I felt for him straight away and I love him since I just can't get my head around that he is gone my wall was covered by David Soul😭😭😭😭
I hear you! I can't quite believe that he's not with us anymore. He'll always be with us, the part of him that lives in our hearts.
It’s not Billy Wilder (Sabrina, Love in the Afternoon…) who made this but William Wyler. You mispronounced but on the screen we can read Wyler’s biography !
Thanks! Yes, I was saying Willy Wyler, because my notes had him listed as Willy. It's very confusing. But it's why we try to put as much data on the screen, so it's less confusing, and in case we make a mistake when we're recording. I love Sabrina, by the way. Audrey was awesome in it! Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment!!

I am a huge fan of the movies of the 1940s and I have never heard of this before. Now I'm going to be tracking it down! It sounds fantastic and just the type of movie I love. Thanks so much for this review.
Glad to have helped! There are so many forgotten gems out there, and we will review as many of them as we can!
The worse the movie, the more entertaining the review😊🤣😁
Less than five minutes in and I'm bailing. You get names wrong, you mispronounce names, you criticize those who can't sing or dance( here's news for you, not everyone in a musical necessarily can sing or dance.) half the time you laugh as if everything that comes out of your mouth is funny.
Salem's lot was actually my introduction to David in 2004 starsky and hutch has always been an afterthought in my universe because my family were into that. Then I discovered his music career i encouraged my grandmother to purchase the debut album in 2006 roughly 30 years after it was released although she was a fan she was hesitant to buy it but I'm glad she did because black bean soup became my favorite song on that album it was the second meal I ever made as a young adult I didn't really fall in love with him until I saw him as Joshua Bolt (aka my joshie boo❤😊) then I discovered the covered man and dogpound shuffle and those are my favorites of his career I always saw him as a teacher and I was fortunate to have followed him for 8 years on Twitter and sadly lost contact just last year so my heart was beyond broken when I heard the news of his death the strange thing about the day he passed i was cleaning house and i literally found my grandmother's box of David soul collectibles like he was saying a final farewell to me then it was weighty to me because he reminded me that time i spent with my grandmother so when I heard he passed away and I just cried like a baby that night i believe i cried myself that night. Rage! Therapy scenes was so amazing and don't forget little ladies of the night 1977 with Louis Gossett , Clifton davis and Linda purl was interesting too❤
Yes, Little Ladies of the Night was also very good. I didn't mention every TV movie, because he did so many, and some do need a separate mention of course. I hope someone else does a tribute featuring his singing career, because there's so much to say and rally around. Big hugs! Great to hear from you!
This work has not faded after 50 years. It’s still fresh, meaningful and beautiful. A great work and a stunning film.
I liked the Branagh production as a production, but I view it as "Death on the Nile" adjacent rather than as an adaptation of the book. Similarly, his Poirot is not Poirot as I like to enjoy him, and feels substantially different from Christie's creation. I enjoy it was a piece of work that is well produced. I don't particularly enjoy it as "Death on the Nile".
Anthony Shaffer composed his own jigsaw puzzle, "Sleuth". I highly recommend the movie with Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier. His twin brother, Peter, wrote "Amadeus".
Spoiler alert: Clearly, the stalking is not accepted in the book, either: Linnet is frightened by it, Poirot condemns it. It is not written or done with any kind of condoning on the part of the characters or Christie; but we know that it's an integral part of the actual plan. So I'm not understanding your take on the stalking when everyone in the story does have a problem with it, just as you do. If it's the fact that it exists at all, remember that it's part of the plan.
I like Cornelia very much, and do find her interesting, and am always sorry that she's not included in the adaptations.
Stopping at about 8 minutes in of this very interesting talk about one of my favorite Christie books. Spoilers, for anyone who hasn't read the book, please don't read what I'm writing: I do agree with you about the state of care of alcoholism during this period; but I disagree with you about how the consequences of the alcoholism are treated: Rosalie is put into the horrendous position of caretaker; her mother's reputation and depression mean that Rosalie feels she can't confide in anyone, and her character suffers in many ways, until Poirot is able to approach her and get her to confess and release, in a way that his character tends to operate. Mrs. Otterbourne comes off ridiculous, but Christie lets us understand what she was, what she is now, and why. Remember that he sees Jackie and Simon before the plot proper starts, and his first reflection is that Jackie loves this man too much. He has been affected by this observation, and part of his reaction to Linnet is rooted in this. Remember too, that Linnet is under no illusions about how Jackie feels about Simon, that twenty years old was a little more mature in the 1930s than it is now, and that she is already in charge of her vast estate; knows how to read and interpret legal documents; and is, generally, an intelligent and feeling young woman. She and Jackie are old friends and she is also aware of Jackie's background and emotional inclinations. Everyone in this story is responsible for their own actions, and this includes Linnet. Poirot's conversations with Jackie are, for me, the heart of this book: the way he approaches her; comprehends her (from what he knows at this point in the novel); the way he urges her to turn away, and the sorrow with which he greets her when she turns up again: these are all strong scenes, strong conversations, and contrary to what I feel you are saying, he does do what Linnet asks him to do; but there isn't any action he can legally take: Jackie, at this point, is doing nothing criminal: she has paid her passage, she is free to travel wherever she wants or can; here in Egypt, he can scarcely be expected to draw up something like a restraining order. He can't chain Jackie to a chair in her room. All he can do is what he can, and to that degree, he does a heartfelt very best. He doesn't know Jackie and Simon's end goal at this point, and so he cannot be expected to expect what happens.
I stumbled on this video over a year later while thinking about how much I love this movie. It was delightful hearing your opinion! I wonder, would you ever be interested in opining on Michiel de Ruyter (2015), set in the next decade? As an American I found it really interesting, sometimes beautiful, but also confusing and sometimes somehow "off", and like Restoration I keep thinking about it over the years. I would love to hear more English-language opinions of it and how it handled (or didn't handle) themes of nationalism, republicanism, colonialism, Dutchness, etc. I felt like it was trying to make some comment about looking back upon the image of one's past, but because I don't have a deep context for it I'm not sure I fully understood what conclusion it came to.
Michiel de Ruyter specifically is a Hero of Dutch history, and that movie was already on my list to review. Already, it's much newer and made by the Dutch, for the Dutch, and so certain nuances will be very different from any English or American take on that time, LOL! Glad you liked the review! We try to do all sorts of stuff, so stick around and be surprised!
Gosling wrote the tribute the history of stunt performers that he and Emily do at the Oscars. ruclips.net/video/caXdWHZvTyw/видео.html
Aaron Taylor Johnson is 10 years younger than Ryan Gosling and wishes he looked as good or is built as good. .
The genetic lottery sucks... for some but not others.
Ryan Gosling actually wanted Jody to be more. I think the thumbs up is important and eventually she realized it. Maybe he didn't want her to have to deal with him not being alright. The guy, dressed like Gosling, who pulls him out of the car is the guy who broke the record on the roll and Gosling presented him with the award at an opening. The hat scene was also one Gosling wanted in because she wears the hat a lot because she gets sunburned, and he thought it would be cute in the movie. In one interview she talks about being Goslinged. it is the scene where she is inviting him to karaoke. When they were walking up to do another take and they both like to ad-lib she did a silly move and he said she should do it on the take. She did and it ended up in the movie and she says she looks like a dork and he is just sitting there grinning. @actualkarenokboomer3158 @actualkarenokboomer3158
He's right (no surprise there). this movie is better with her in it, we don't live in a vacuum after all. And yes, karaoke is designed to make you look like a dork. She did it very well.

Thank you for commenting! It's wonderful to hear from others about this movie I adore so much. Enjoy the video! I really tried to do the film justice.
I loved the analysis of the movie. It's like you say, Henry's love at first sight and his rude attitude towards Alex not to show it that made Alex believe all the time that he hated him; with the climax being the cake scene. From there, forced to feign friendship, they realize that everything was a misunderstanding and friendship begins to emerge. Henry was always clear about how he felt about Alex, and Alex was attracted to Henry (as he admits in the scene when he tells Nora that he kissed him). It shows you two different worlds, that of Henry suffocated by the responsibility of belonging to the Royal family and that of Alex who is freer (something we see in the raft scene). The performances are wonderful, from everyone actually. Nick and Taylor give us the best Henry and Alex we could have (especially after I read the book and they were very loyal to the spirit of the characters) Greetings from Argentina!🇦🇷🇦🇷
They announced they are doing a sequel. Great review. I loved this movie also. The chemistry between Henry and Alex is everything.
❤❤❤
13:51 I think we were in the beginning of a new wave of epic historical war movies that was sparked by Braveheart in 1995. Then we got Gladiator, Troy, Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven, probably some others. The Last Samurai. My theory is that 300 ruined it by diluting a historical movie with the elements of two other popular trends of the early aughts, e.g. comic book movies and fantasy. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were so popular as were the X-Men and Spiderman movies, and 300 tried to throw it all in one, and it worked in the sense that it was popular at the time, and I blame that on adolescent boys who played too much God of War and thought it was real Greek mythology. But 300 shifted the whole tone of what would follow. Hollywood then chased after what would be the next epic family fantasy, and if it wanted to be more serious, it was dumbed down and had that silly video game athletic. The Chronicles of Narnia The Spiderwick Chronicles Percy Jackson Eregon The Golden Compass Clash of the Titans Conan Hercules Where are the movies for adults? And kids can grow up enjoying and appreciating this type as well, which I think is preferable to the other type.
Yep,those movies you listed are for kids. Serious Roman epics started with - Quo Vadis The Robe Ben Hur. Then the 1960s - Spartavus Cleopatra Fall of the RE ( best Roman epic ever made). Italian sword and sandal movies - Peplum - were low budget trash.Unwatchable.
@@richardscanlan3419 Yep, I'm a big fan of the "epic" genre, I only haven't seen The robe or Quo Vadis because I think I should check out the books first. I liked The Fall of the Roman Empire, but couldn't rank it as better than Spartacus.
@@Luxington1 Each to their own.Highly recommend you see The Robe and Quo Vadis, they are both top notch. On your second point,a lot of people feel the same way.But for me,FOTRE breaks the mould,,as it doesn't centre around Christianity - which so many Roman films do - but instead works on what made the RE tick. Put it this way,it was more cerebral than most Roman epics.
Wow... what a wonderful review! So fair to recognize its faults and to speculate on possible reasons why, and so knowledgeable to appreciate work well done. I lean more to the choice of 1830s dresses because they look more fabulous than simple Regency frocks on screen, as opposed to the war of 1812, which few Americans even remember -- indeed, they call it the Forgotten War, perhaps because they basically lost :)
History is funny with odd similarities. And yeah, I think the 1830s dresses are fab too! Glad you liked the review!

Hopefully RUclips's subtitling can be switched to French. Good luck!
Malheureusement, nous ne parlons pas français. Et il n'y a pas non plus de sous-titres français générés en interne... Je vais continuer à chercher des options, mais ce n'est pas simple... (J'ai traduit ça avec Google.)
Love these remembrances of some notable parts of David Soul"s amazing work and career! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. What a treat for his fans! He definitely was not your average anything! From getting mauled by a bear cub for his very first TV role in the Flipper series to the stage! He was such a trailblazer! Oh my goodness, what an amazing person he was, and he gave us so much of himself. May he rest in peace and power! It's great looking at David"s work through your eyes. You are right to note that he really did put himself all the way into whatever he did. He did not believe in leaving anything on the field. Just a sweet piece of trivia, he played Makora in the Star Trek episode, The Apple. How adorable he was at 23, but the makeup, oh my! You made note that you will never get bored! So true!He did so much! I agree with you about Rage! A brazen and brave role-playing choice. He had an amazing range. Excellent Ilana💜🤜🤛👏👏👏👏
We were Blessed to have been part of the generation to bear witness, enjoy this multi-talented David Soul. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
We're lucky to have been on earth while he was here. It almost seemed like he was going to be here forever, didn't it?
A beautiful tribute to David Soul! Superb singer/writer, actor/writer, humanitarian. A Beautiful & Amazing SOUL! David Soul was Blessed by God with many talents. We were Blessed to have been part of the generation to

Unsub was more precursor of Criminal Minds...right up to ensemble cast and air plane and interactions.
Ah yes, you're right. 👍🏻 I'm not much of a procedural watched, so I'm not that familiar with them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I was the same, I listened to the album first. My mother bought it when I was younger. Later I saw this film.
Moms can be very hip, LOL!
