Why Is Building Transit So Expensive?
The cost of building transit in North America and especially the United States has gotten considerably higher and even prohibitively expensive to smaller cities. So, what is causing these high transit building prices and how can we address this problem of transit building costs going up in cities of all sizes across the continent?

Thes project's are multi generational assets. You are a singular one generation, one lifetime being. Your temporary inconvenience does not outweigh the need for something that will benefit hundreds of thousands of people for many years to come.

In times past, many railroads and transit agencies built their own rolling stock. If transit could assemble their own in existing maintenance shops, slowly but continuously say several a year, would not have to "boom and bust" fleet replacement strategies.

In Germany it's one of the main factors, or even the main factor why nothing train related goes forward and gets build... eg.; the very very important HSR connection between two major cities in north germany is in planning phase since fucking 20 years and yes only thanks to NIMBYs....so frustrating.... If you have to build a new road for a BRT, then it's better to build a railway instead. If you are using existing roads, consider if it's possible to build a railway on some of the lanes. If a BRT has to be built, it could use trolleybusses to be more eco-friendly.

Well... it's even worse with BART because they couldn't go with twin tunnel boring technology that we already had the equipment and expertise for in North America.. No it had to be fancy and use a massive single bore like in Europe and Asia. So they spent a bunch of money engineering it and only now finally after so many delays due to choosing that design there's finally the equipment ready to do it.. They say it's "the more cost effective option" now but that's a half truth only due to it costing more to change any of the design on this point. So yeah no sense at all on that project and so much other transit in the SF bay area was neglected due to the cost overruns..

Okay okay I have an idea: autonomous vehicles but create groups of them so they can carry more people and all be in the same page, we don’t want any accidents or collisions so give them their own lanes where they can be fully separated, finally create many routes: these “trains” of autonomous vehicles.

Additionally it's always interest, where those beautiful animations of hundreds of autonomous cars crossing intersections without traffic lights and without colliding, are completely ignoring how pedestrians are supposed to cross the intersection. Bridges and Pedestrian subways? C'mon, we tried that about a 60-79 years ago and people hated it, why should that now be different? Autonomous Cars are build without keeping people outside cars in-mind. Once again those who develop them experience traffic exclusively behind the windshield.

Community input exists in all free, democratic societies, but is usually limited to very specific topics (i.e. would the project likely cause a very specific harm), and the window is only a couple of months long. In the US, especially in more liberal states, anyone can raise any sort of objections, incl. purely hypothetical or even imaginary fears, at any point in time, even after the review has long been completed, permits issued, and construction underway... Sure, shady practices by contractors can also contribute to the exorbitant costs and slow progress, but the single most important factor is the fact that a handful or well-connected NIMBYs have hijacked a system that was put in place to protect the environment and vulnerable communities, and weaponized it to safeguard their wealth and comfort at everyone else's expense.

The SacRT light rail network suffers from the myopic planning values from the eighties. Stations serve an imaginary commuter ridership that never materialized. Most stations are surrounded by empty parking lots. Empty during the peak hours of weekdays. It’s obvious the original plan was based on someone’s imagination rather than on real ridership numbers. Most successful rail projects such as Hong Kong’s MTR or Sydney’s rail system is based on locating stations for non car riding commuters. There isn’t a need to provide acres of parking lots. In the case of Hong Kong the rail developer is the prime developer of the real estate around each station thus provide high ridership as well as generating income to underwrite transit development costs. In the case of Sydney, planners locate stations based on non-car commuters as well. Until Sacramento matures in its understanding of transit it will always look like an orphan system. Unloved and unwanted.

With subcontracting, there is usually an unholy alliance between the contractor and the politicians. In corrupt cities, like Chicago, politicians accept bribes called kickbacks for contracting with a particular design or construction firm. For example, let's say a new signage project will legitimately cost $1 million to design, manufacture, and replace all the platform signs in a subway system. Now, factor into that, there are 5 aldermen on the transit committee, and each wants $20,000 donations to their reelection campaigns in exchange for the issuance of the contract. The project is now $1.1 million. Don't forget the commissioner of the transit agency who wants $50,000 cash in exchange for the contract issuance. now its $1.15 million. Now the Union needs a certain amount of $50/hr no-show or no-work jobs for the friends of the union's leadership or some politicians. Let's assume that adds another $300k to the contract. So now we're looking at a price of $1.45 million on a $1 million project. Public sector projects are always the target for massive corruption.

There's a large amount of corruption going on. In an audit on the NYC metro extension (the one that's taken 80 years) the auditor could not match up 400 staff to what they were doing, at £1000 a week. She just could not work out what their jobs were -they loitered around the construction sites, and even the job of picking up small parts could not warrant that much of a payroll

  • @stevevaccaro1645

I've used the T dozens of times since it opened. A really nice addition to SF's transit infrastructure. "The cost ballooned to nearly $2billion" - that is about what it costs to build an underground line in a densely packed area these days. NYC's 2nd Ave subway cost about the same per mile. This line will seem like a bargain in 20-30 years and beyond. BART faced the same criticism in the 60's and 70's, and started out with low ridership and lawsuits that delayed it's opening, but today, the initial cost of $1.8billion 1960s/70s dollars for 75miles of track, stations, train sets and infrastructure can never be duplicated. With 10-15 min headways reduced to 2-3 minute headways (if needed) the 2 or 3 car trains can quadruple the capacity. The crushloads on the 30 (on narrow/congested Stockton St) is one reason why this line was built. The depth of 2 of the stations (Market St/Union Sq and Chinatown)is really is no big deal. To get underneath the 3 level Powell St Station (which the T bisects and the Union Sq station is connected to) requires near 100 ft deep platforms for the T. Every day around 400K passengers use Muni - that is just under half it's population - investing in transit in SF long term has always been a good deal. No it is not perfect. But for those of us who don't have cars it has become a quick and fairly reliable way to get around town.

Out in Phoenix, construction costs ballooned since the Gilbert Road extension. Before then, light rail costed around $100 million/mile, even if there were new intersection designs and multiple park-and-rides. The Northwest Phase 2 extension was around $250 million/mile, while only adding one elevated station, a parking garage, and a 1/4 mile bridge over a freeway. Most of the 1.6 miles were the typical street-running tramway. The South Central extension, a 5-mile branch estimated to be completed in early 2025, has a similar per-mile cost to the Northwest Phase 2 extension, and the only hard part is reconfiguring a few tracks in downtown Phoenix.
