Friendly Giant Concert - Two Pipes and a Bassoon

A hilarious, heart-warming clip about the bassoon from the old Canadian TV Show "The Friendly Giant."

At 1:49 they're playing "Romance" from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kijé, Symphonic Suite, Op. 60 - II." How cool is that ?!?!
素晴らしい!😊
Jerome just rocking out back there is a whole mood
Oh, how I loved mornings with the friendly giant and his music!
How we get into classical music.
You don’t have to be sad about that it’s just a cow jumping over the moon what’s the big deal
Jerome was really feeling it here 😂😂😂
My all time favorite!
This show introduced me to classical music. I really enjoyed it.
You can keep Mr. Rogers, Mr. Dressup, Captain Kangaroo, and even Sesame Street. The one program from my childhood that had the most lasting influence on me was The Friendly Giant.
Analytics tell me; how many views, even length of time! I watched and commented 3x cause it fine music, by caring people. So RUclips 'devs', enjoy.
2:46 Giraffe dude; no more MonsterEnergy! At least switch to "suger-free".
Back for another concert! Nov.15/2022
This part was sooooo awesome.
If your wanting a knife sharpener that's easy to use and maybe easy to manufacture and get to market maybe get in touch with me I've got an idea I'll gladly GIVE YOU that most likely will do the trick
Sure, I am always curious to hear more ideas!
Why didn't you simply lock the knife down stationary and use a guided system? Your setup will get a knife sharp but it'll not get one as sharp as how I just mentioned (please see Wicked Edge, KME or The cheap new sharpener out made by Work Sharp)
The main reasons are: - With those systems, the stones are not as wide as the knife. This creates several problems, the chief of them being that it can be very hard to keep the knife edge dead straight, which is important for evenness across the edge and scraping the reed evenly. - With these systems, the stones are proprietary. Most players already have stones that they like and and I wanted to give them the options of using those. This allows for a far wider variety of possibilities. - The clamping of the knife in each of these systems is not designed for double hollow ground knives. I used the Wicked Edge for years and it was one of the most frustrating aspects of the system, and one of the big reasons that I developed this one. Without perfectly replicable clamping that is quick/easy to use, the results will be inconsistent. Also, the clamping issue really limited the types of knives that could be used with those systems, well-designed as they are. - The clamping on these systems does not allow for sufficiently low angles. There are others, but these are the main ones.
Where's The Beginning Of The Episode?
Classic
Always thought Jerome sounded like Spock as a kid
So nice to hear your playing!
I haven't heard this one before - what a gorgeous Poulenc composition!
It really is! All of the movements are equally wonderful.
@@grahammackenzie8778 Indeed!
Frank Zappa would have loved this.
@ Petar T I’m 65 and started going to concerts in ‘72. I recall (I think) The Police doing the Batman theme when I saw them during their first album tour in a ~1000 person hall called The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. It got a big cheer but I have always thought that if any band had played the theme from ‘The King’s Outlaw’ (AKA Thierry La Fronde) or the Friendly Giant theme while in Canada that it would have brought the house down. If you haven’t heard the Thierry La Fronde theme before as most will have not there are good ones on here. Rene L does one.
@@mikedavison3400I'm from Vancouver. The Commodore is a good room.
Yeah in my younger years we got that horsehair sprung dance floor going but good. That poor bookstore downstairs had books falling off the shelves.
What great puppets. The fingers are articulated to move while they’re playing.
(new subscription), as quality never ages out.
I’m so happy to find this! As an adult watching it, though - I sometimes feel worried that Friendly Giant might punch Giraffe for talking over him.
I wish he would. Jerome’s a dick.
This program was never scripted. That is why you may feel one character or another talks over another. It was completely natural conversation.
Based Raccoons
Grew up watching this show..
The Friendly Giant plays Gentle Giant.
Friendly Giant played every recorder from sopranino to tenor.
Loved this show back when I was a kid in the '60's- didn't know it lasted so long. As a musician, it now bugs me that the Giant isn't really playing that recorder ;-)
I hear you. It freaks me out that Rusty didn't really play the harp.
What!
Started in 1953 (back in Wisconsin) moving to Canada in 1958.. on air until 1985
He was playing the recorder.
he was playing the recorder; the extra recorder credit this time around was for the 2 animals doing the 2nd recorder/bassoon combo
what is the name of this musics?

I loved this show so much! So happy to find I can see it here again.
That sad bassoon piece made me think of Sting...
That's def same as do the Russians love Thier children too.
Because Sting used/borrowed that piece in his song "Russians"
@@RhiannaBarr I was just watching sting play Russians like ten minutes ago. A march 2022 vid. I remember loving the melancholy when I heard it originally on the radio in the 80s. I copied it from the radio to tape.
@@RhiannaBarr You're right. I checked Wikipedia which says that the Romance theme is from the Lieutenant Kijé Suite by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.
watching Jerome Gavotte when you're stoned would be fun!
Creep
considering the size of Friendly...those are freakin huge animals....oh those poor little people in the village...being pooped on.
Pig
Why you should NEVER read the comments
This was done at a time when it was ok to speak to children softy, and respecting their intelligence, while introducing them to musical culture!
Wise parents still do
How I loved this show .I wanted so much when I was little to actually go to the castle and meet everyone. I was sad at the end to see the cow jump over the moon. Thank you for making us feel safe and happy . RIP
gotta love the trippy giraffe
The fact that Jerome the Giraffe spoke with a cool, adult voice speaks volumes for the progressive vibe of this show. It was okay to want to curl up in a tiny chair, but children were not "talked down" to. I loved this show and so did many Canadian kids.
