SandPine - The Out Of Shape Hiker
Florida Trail Day 34: Blowdowns from hell | Don’t hike closed trails
Long section hiking on the Florida trail. On this day I did 16+ miles from River Banks campsite to Confluence camp where the Withlacoochee and Suwannee Rivers meet. Because I didn’t check the Florida Trail Association website for trail closures, I ended up hiking a section of the trail that was officially closed. But there were no closure signs in the trail and no markers. I ended up bushwhackinga many of those miles. It finally got dark on me before reaching camp and it got more dangerous. Please be careful out there and don’t hike closed trails.

Florida Trail Day 33: Shady Uber driver | Leash Baxter so he won’t follow you!

On New Years’s day 1/1/2025, I continued my long section hike in the Florida Trail. I spent the night in a hotel sleeping on a proper bed, showered, did laundry, and recharged all my electronics. I had been in the trail six days already. I had to wait a while to get a ride with Uber to the hotel in Live Oak, FL. But the next day took even longer. The Uber driver finally showed up but red flags ...
Florida Trail Day 32 - New Years Eve in the woods??

Section hiking the Florida Trail. On mew years Eve the plan was to get close to White Springs, Fl. Then go into town on New Year’s Day to charge batteries. But since that would have taken 4-6 hrs to charge power banks, I opted for spending the night in a hotel. Get a dull shower, town dinner, and sleep in a bed. While charging all electronics overnight.

Florida Trail Day 30 - Getting hit by a storm while at the Suwannee River
Просмотров 21314 дней назад
Day 30 of section hiking the Florida Trail. On this day I finally reach the Suwannee trail sections. This is one of the most beautiful sections of the trail. Very challenging with elevation changes (by Florida standards😄). As I was enjoying th Big Shoals rapids, a storm rolled in and hit me hard very quickly.
Florida Trail Day 29 - Close encounter with a Cottonmouth venomous snake.

Section hiking the National Scenic Florida Trail. I am on the 29th day where I went from the Osceola Shelter to the famous and very hiker friend Milton’s Country Store and Restaurant. I had my first encounter with a venomous snake. He didn’t yield the trail to me so I had to go around him. But Mr before he hiss at me.
Florida Trail Day 28 - Woken up by hunters | Shots fired nearby
Просмотров 74821 день назад
Florida Trail Day 28 was a long day of hiking almost 20 miles. I went from the Olustee Creek camp site to Osceola Shelter just north of I-10. During the hike, I came across hunters that didn’t see me and shot two rounds. Probably not at me though.

I am back to section hiking on the Florida Trail. I started where I left off earlier this year. In Lake Butler, Florida. I am going NOBO (Northbound) until I run out of time. Lots of road walking on this section but when I got to the forest I was able to keep my feet dry. Not much rain lately.

LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! HANG IN THERE
I am surprised they didnt lock up that tower a lot of places lock acess to fire towers due to liabilities
I have had a couple encounters with them on my swamp hikes they just coil up and have the body posture of walk away and leave me alone they were never agressive when I came across them the pygmy rattlers are the most agressive I have come across
i've seen a few videos of suwannee section lately and it's beautiful. i really need to get out there one day!
Good to see you out rollin with it
Hey man. I hope your healing is coming along and you get back at it. I’m back at that thing that pays the bills. Hope to get another hundo on the FT next month.
@ Yes sir. I am almost back to 100%. Will be headed back to Deep Gap NC soon to pick up where I left off on the Bama To Baxter. Be safe out there. I hear it’s getting cold down south😀
What pack are you carrying?
I am using the Outdoor Vitals CS40. 27 oz. I wish the would make it in black and a little bit wider and less taller. I call it my giant burrito. 🤣 the side pockets sag a little bit but carries my 17ish base weight, 26-30 lbs total weight just fine.
Nice!
Thanks for taking us along on your hike of the Suwannee section! The water is so beautiful and I love the sandy beaches!
So far the entire Suwannee is my favorite followed by Ocala. Spending the night at one of the river beaches is a must IMO.
I love to lay in the camp at night and listen to the Owls sounding off like at the end of your video. I consider a trip a flop if I don't hear any Owls during the trip.
I hear you. I say the same about sunsets and sunrises. When I find a nice camp site, I always hope to at least get a beautiful one to go along with a nice camp. Then the night rolls in and is a different story. All part of why we love nature.
I can’t believe I just found your channel-this is the kind of quality content I’ve been searching for!
Thank you. And welcome aboard.
Curious what shirt is the blue hoodie??
I am all invested in OV gear. That is the Outdoor Vitals Altitude Sun Hoodie. It compresses into a tiny little ball and weights nothing. I picked it up on sale. If you like OV in Facebook or Instagram, they will often offer 20-40% off deals. I picked this up on a sale for less than $20. Love it but I do wish it had thumbholes in it. outdoorvitals.com/products/altitude-hoodie
@sandpine99 Thank you!!
Zero Day's pleasures , hot shower , salad , hot meal and relaxing before hitting the trial again.
I sure needed the real bed rest, shower, and laundry. But I mainly needed to charge my electronics. I was out hiking again the following morning. No zero day.
For more then 60 years I have camped in a Jungle Hammock and that swinging bench at the 4:34 mark would make a nice temporary hammock for me. I keep my Blood Sugar in check with lots of protein and very little carbs. I put my own meals together and some times cheat by getting the " Next Mile Meals " they are Ketogenic , low carb backpacking meals.
Thanks for the advice. I am too lazy to prep my own meals so I drink a ton of water to helps me keep the glucose down along with meds. For now. But walking/hiking all day sure does wonders.
Gloworm 😁
I love those shots of tents with night light inside. The neon green tent sure makes seem like a glow stick.
Looks like a lot of change since you went thru. Definitely creepy place though. Ha ha
yea there are more signs now that people are using the camp from what I saw on your video. It Was very abandoned when I ran into it. It seems like a place where some could get kidnapped and get skinned alive and nobody would ever know. Just gave the wrong vibes.
@ ha ha yup
Big Sholes rapids and a great place to camp. Canoeing the river a group of us stayed there two nights it was such a great place to camp. We put in at Lem Griffis fish camp at the Okefenokee Swamp ( headwaters of the Suwanee River ) and paddled down to the Gulf of Mexico about 213 miles. A couple of the guy's ran the rapids on the far right side without any problems.
I am coming back to camp there for sure. But only when the river is that low.
Felicidades hermano ....muchas bendiciones x todos.
Ooooof - Not sure how I'd feel about running across that nope rope (snake), but that burger and fries looks like it would be worth the risk 😅
@@jcarr1 I am too fat for him to eat. 🤣 but yea you run really fast. In my case, just walk fast while keeping an eye on the danger noodles.
Stay safe....happy hiking ☺☺
My family lives all over Florida. Lovely state. ☺
YE COON HUNT AT NIGHT
The nice thing about snakes is that if you leave them alone they will leave you alone. I've had Cottonmouths under my Jungle hammock. I always lean out and take a look under me before stepping out of the hammock. One morning there were a pair of them , eventually they moved on with a little gentile prodding from my trekking pole. Got one to move and the other followed.
@@Oldsparkey 😲😲😬😬
right on!
Good video, thanks for sharing! You do a great job editing in this video. That’s something I need to learn. Happy trails! Trail name: TURBO
@@walkeroutdoorsadventures8521 thanks Turbo. Have you done the FT?
@@walkeroutdoorsadventures8521 nm. I just looked up your channel. I have seen your pics post on the FT Hikers page. Great shots man. Keep’’em coming.
@ 811 miles of it including the western corridor.
@@sandpine99 thanks!
@@walkeroutdoorsadventures8521 western corridor is where I started. Love it there. Specially the track from Pruitt, to Santos, green swamp, then 88 store. I wish more would do it but I know the road walk to Lakeland is rough
Hunters at 11:30 P.M. way past legal hunting hours. That lets me have a lot of questions , unanswered ones. Good thing you had the orange on with hunters in the area. Be safe.
@@Oldsparkey ask away. 😁. That property that fta uses for the trail is known for also being leased by a local hunting club that use hounds for hunting at night. It is hunting season and I was expecting that. I was not expecting to get shot at. Or shots fired near me later in the day. But it is “Florida”.
Sandpine! Looks like a good day to hike. Are the bugs bad this time of year? I hiked in Florida years ago and was eaten up by no see ems, but that was in the spring.
@@tommyh.8391 no bugs. They don’t like the cold weather. 😁
On that map Tosohatchee could be referred to as Fort Christmas. They are basically a hand in glove relationship. Tosohatchee Wilderness Management Area is slightly south of Christmas.
@@Oldsparkey super wet in that area but hopefully dry this time of year. I have not day hike some sections there. I have yet to do the south completely.
I would have run and not look back. You're brave to stop and turn around. I am not an admirer of snakes.
Ya i live in the mountains. We put them up along with parabolic mirrors in the trees to see oncoming traffic at night.
My first time seeing a stop sign for a road that is mainly grass. 😅 I guess the wildlife needs to yield too. 😂
Based on its coloration, the fact that it wasn't "buzzing" in warning, and, especially, the white inside its mouth, i would guess it's a cotonmouth/water moccasin. Glad you saw him before you were right on top of him.
Glad he didn’t chase me. I thought water moccasins were only near water. This one was in a very dry area. Sure used to be wet there since the walking boards. But no water for weeks/months there.
He’s cold🥰
and probably hungry. But he didn't get a piece of me that day. LOL ...
Thats a fire break.
I was checking out your tent. Nice area
Check out my FT and AT vids. I am using the Gossamer 1 now, But I am taking the Nemo in a few days. I am picking up the FT trail from Lake Butler North for a few days. On here waiting for the fam while I watch your vid in Seminole. I still yet to do south of Christmas but I have done the OTL from Clewiston.
@ cool. I’m at the 500 mile working north to Ft Pickens! Hopefully be done by Feb/March
Music is annoying,
Fixed a bit on Day 5 and after.
Well wishes i will be on AT March 2025 . I will be documenting my journey as well . Happy hiking 🥾
Good luck to you. Hope to see some of your vids.

You're hiking during the winter??
@marcusvaldes if you have gear for it why not? I am section hiking not thru (yet)
I like the way you post hiking vids, man. Great content!
@@scout005 thank you. I’ll return around Christmas to do another section.

Sandpine! I like a good storm, and the waterfalls were great. Standing by for your next adventure.
@@tommyh.8391 I do too but didn’t like it when I was trying to sleep and had a whole wall exposed. 🤣. I may not get out there again until around Christmas.
Why are you hiking in the winter?
Because I am alive! :-) I am section hiking and finally get join some of the big boys/girls club in hitting the AT and not just my local flat trail.
@ ok. Thought that you were a thru hiker
One day. I do have gear for winter but yea, I wouldn’t start in the winter. Maybe early feb but more likely a March thing whenever I can do it.
@ I follow a lot of hiking Vlogs. It seems like people are starting earlier. And flying through the trail. I have a lot of books in which the hikers would start in late March and finish in September.
I'm curious where you went, to get picked up. Back down to Deep Gap, or on to Mooney Gap? I'm hiking this section next year and was wondering about bail out points up to Albert Mountain.
I hiked the mile back to Deep Gap. Pick up from Mooney or the two after that cost more for a shuttle driver to pick you up from. Deep Gap is also far from main road but I was able to find a shuttle to pick me up there and take me to Green Drag for less than others that wanted over $100.
Sandpine! I like a good storm, and the waterfalls were great. Standing by for your next adventure.
Congrats on finishing Georgia!
Thanks.. let's go hit NC now.
Wonderful video you are doing now look forward to see u each day!
Thank you. I am back home and the next time I have off is after Christmas but not sure I will be up on the AT. May back on the FT since I am not done with that one.
Another excellent video. Love that music!
Thank you. I usually stick to one soundtrack per section hike series that I go out and do. I'll be switching in the next go around.
That was very nice of that guy giving you a home made wrist charm. Trail Magic.
True. now that you said it, thet was trail magic.
Yay! Congratulations! You completed Georgia. What a day. Plum Orchard Shelter to Standing Indian Shelter? Again, you did amazing.
Thanks.
Great Job!
Thanks!
What is your routine for ticks?
Reminding folks about Leave No Trace principles via RUclips is not being a "Karen" imo. We all either care for the trail, in our own ways, or we risk degrading it.
Yea seeing that many MH bags left over pissed me off a bit. The smell they give after is so strong that it will probably attract bears and other critters too that shelter. No wonder they have "Bear activity" signs posted around it. It was way too much for me to carry out.
Sandpine! I like that coffee and cocoa idea. I’m going to try that here at home. The picture of your tent in the quiet foggy woods tells it all. When I’m car camping I always have a pee bottle in my sleeping bag, so I never have to get out in the cold. Lookin for the next video.
Yea I look forward to drinking my cafe-mocha every morning when I am out hiking. It also gives you extra calories for the day. Lol… I didn’t even realized I had not empty my pee bottle when I started recording. 🤣
