Polishing A Turntable Dust Cover
Просмотров 71 тыс.Год назад
We've all bought that "mint" condition turntable only to realize the dust cover is scratched to hell! My first ever attempt at polishing this cover from a Pioneer SPL-110 using a drill, some polishing pads and a some polishing paste. I also used a couple of old microfiber rags and a sock to get into the folds of the cover. I'm currently editing a video detailing a full service of this turntable...

The History of Acoustic Research, Edgar Villchur and Acoustic Suspension Loudspeakers

Now do part two where you install cables to keep the two ends of the fence perpendicular to the blade and install a tape measure at the business end so you can easily input a measured 90D cut without having to stop the saw and measure it with your portable tape measure. Then you can get rid of those clamps. Oh, do you know how to do that?

I wouldn't use toothpaste and borrow a drill if you haven't got one or buy a cheap used one (you'll find more uses for it). You will not get good results by hand, you can't compete with the untiring and constant power/speed of a drill on such a large area (it's not a watch).

Just came across your video and loved every minute of it and I'm now subscribed. Wharfedale didn't make a full range 15" driver but did make both hifi and musical instrument versions of the 15" units. When fitted to 5 cubic ft. and over enclosures, the Super 12's sound sensational but as you say the surrounds would need attention for optimum performance. I've also noticed that all four of your drivers are of the ceramic magnet type. If you think they are good, try the Alnico magnet versions if you can find a pair. The comparison is (to my ears) like chalk and cheese. I'm not sure of the details and dates but I suspect that Rank thought that the ceramic magnets were a cheaper option and probably outsourced them as Gilbert was manufacturing his own Alnico magnets using a DC power line (utilised for electric trolley buses that ran past his factory in Bradford Road). Legend has it that when they threw the switch for the electromagnet, the trolley buses running past would come to an abrupt halt!

My girlfriend surprised me with a set of Coral BX85s I had my eyes on for the last few months from an antique store. Had no idea if they worked, I was just taken away by the aesthetics. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to receive these as a gift. Hooked them up into my Pioneer SX316 receiver from mid 00s, and modern turntable. They sound incredible and drive really well. Integrated high frequency adjustments on the back, these things really sing and have a lot of warmth. Super pleased with them.

Great story but sort of glosses over the impact that Henry Kloss had. Seems like the original idea was indeed Edgar's but Henry did all the work which I believe was why they parted company. Also, Henry felt that a two-way system was easier to "voice" and why the KLH 6 and KLH 17 were such successes which were of course designed after he and Edgar had a parting of the ways and Henry took Lowe and Hoffman to form KLH. Henry unfortunately lost his way after Advent. He didn't see flat screen TV's coming and they blindsided his dreams of video projection as being the future of TV. If only he had stuck to audio.

I correspond with Keven from time to time. He introduced me to tube amps , and open baffles. Two years ago he sent me a pair of Coral Holy Baskets as a Christmas gift. I'm now using them in a open baffle bi-amp setup with pair of digital audio Maraschino Cherry amps driving Two ten inch bass drivers in each baffle, and a 300B tube amp driving the corals. I'm using a Marchand electronic crossover set at 400Hz. I was using a pair of Tang Band W8-1808 drivers and then later a pair of Mark Audio Alpair 12p drivers,. I was reluctant to retrofit the small Corals , because I didn't believe they could compete. Was I wrong ! The Little Corals trounce them both in detail and separation. I have played them as high as 100 db with no distortion. Every time I listen to these 3.5 inch drivers , I'm totally amazed at how great they sound.

This vid makes me want to resurrect my AlNiCo 12" Wharfedale full tange speakers from the '50s. I bought them with disintegrated surrounds. I installed new, foam surrounds as that is what they had on when I bought them, but they were gone. I don't know where to get cloth surrounds. I think one of them had coil rub so that's why I didn't use them much. Thnx for showing how to fix them. I own many 'dales with cloth surround drivers. I never thought that they'd let air through. The rubber cement is a good idea but I wouldn't want to impact transient response by having too much weight from impregnation with glue. How did yours turn out with three passes of rubber cement?
