    if the can is puffed or watery its spoiled. the issue with imported surstromming is that its almost always spoiled. normally the fish is intact and its almost like a can of sardines but stinkier. not a watery soup of smelly rotten fish. this can was 100% rotten. it fell of the bones. i bet it smelled so bad.

    A nice job and a lot of patience both in the search for the tools to use and in the extreme polishing of the coin which, however, 2000 years ago, I certainly don't think it even remotely resembled a similar object. Certainly the production techniques of the time did not allow for a similar final result. It is a "Crazy Polishing" job from 2024, but I wouldn't call it a restoration. It would be like saying that to restore the Sistine Chapel, they transform one of Michelangelo's masterpieces into a photorealistic scene. Anyway, you got a beautiful, extremely well polished coin. :) --- Un bel lavoro e tanta pazienza sia nella ricerca degli utensili da utilizzare sia nell'estrema lucidatura della moneta che pero', 2000 anni fa, di certo non credo assomigliasse lontanamente ad un oggetto simile. Di certo le tecniche di produzione di allora, non permettevano un risultato finale simile. E' un lavoro di "Lucidatura pazza" del 2024, ma non lo chiamerei un restauro. Sarebbe come dire che per restaurare la cappella Sistina, trasformano uno dei capolavori di Michelangelo, in una scena fotorealistica. Comunque, hai ottenuto una bella moneta estremamente ben lucidata. :)

    In practicality you wouldn't want to do this for a pan you cook in, the whole point of the black oxide layer is to stop the pan from rusting. I'm sure you could carefully season the polished surface so it wouldn't rust as fast but getting water anywhere near that shine will ruin it. Not hating, still cool, just throwing in some extra facts.

    • @hlaw2830
      @hlaw2830 22 дня назад

      The oxide layer is what's referred to as "seasoning," anyone can reapply it at home; also, there's no ruining cast iron, not even rust, just strip it and reseason, it'll be fine. Same goes for carbon steel, which is already smooth, so you are correct about the practicality. :P PS. The reason vintage cast iron is so expensive is because older green sand casting methods resulted in a much, much smoother surface, but again, these days you should just get carbon. $50 for a 10" from Matfer can be your go-to pan for the rest of your life, and you don't even really have to take care of it, lol. Non-stick, too, because of the seasoning, which you can always reapply yourself.

    • @nuffsaid0
      @nuffsaid0 22 дня назад

      This is what internet is for! The beauty of internet advises from people who know absolutely nothing about the subject they're giving advice on. This is not a black oxide layer. Black oxide is used for chemical gun blacking and it is a quite expensive process. Cast iron is seasoned with vegetable oils being polymerized at high temperature and forming a polymer coating on the surface of the pan. This is what give cast iron pans non-stick properties. And obviously you wouldn't leave your pan without re-seasoning it which is exactly what is shown in the video. In practicality you DO WANT to do exactly this for any crude cast iron pan. For many reasons. For one, polished surfaces are way less likely to seriously rust simply because there's way less surface area. For the same reason those polished pans are much better at being non-stick. And when you season the polished surface again, it'll get very uniform, with excellent adhesion to the metal because no weird stuff will form in micro crevices of the rough surface. Highly polished cast iron pans are simply the best, and the rough ones are worthless because they are physically can't be non-stick.
