Boat Projects - Part II - Below Deck
Hi there folks, we've been holed up in Mana waiting for a southerly front to pass and are just about to head up the West Coast to the Bay of Islands and from there to Tonga and beyond. We've had a very busy period getting Amélie all up to scratch to get our Cat 1 certificate (which we received the other day). So I thought I would share a few insights into some of the work that we have been doing. It is just a selection, there is an awful lot more that has been done which I haven't covered here. If you are interested in more detail in respect to any of the jobs we have been busy with let me know in the comments and if there is enough interest I will do a special feature........

A selection of sailing clips since our Round the South Island trip. Mostly Cook Strait, Marlborough Sounds and East Coast of South Island. A bit of dolphin action, some seals, lions mane and moon jellyfish round the nice sunsets and beautiful sailing out. Enjoy the Titi bird song at Tinui Island, where we nudged a rock..... No voice overs or music just the gentle sound of sailing (and Titi)

Dolphin action at Worlds End, Tennyson Inlet, Pelorus Sound, NZ
Beautiful boat, and obviously very well looked after. I've just watched all of the sailing around the south island series and thoroughly enjoyed each of them.
Our steel keel just touched bottom overnighting in Loads river. Board sound what an amazing place. 1 month in Stewart island 2001 before entering 18 of the 22 Ford's Im 74 now and looking back what a privilege it was to circumnavigate the south island.

Good stuff
Great woodland sounds!
Hi Amélie crew, this journey in NZ looks beautiful. I noticed you're near Tasmania these days. Do you plan to sail back to NZ from there in the next weeks? :)
Hi there, we are in Tasmania at the moment and loving it. Our plan is to sail back up the east coast of Australia and then across to Vanuatu then New Caledonia before returning to NZ at the end of the year.
What an amazing video. You both must have worked so hard to put that together and I like the snippets here and there. You really kno whow to sail that boat in those waters. We have moved to the Westland and we are by the sea. W love the wildness of it and especially the rain. Its like no other place in the world. The sand flies arnt so bad in winter time:) We would love to sail around Fiordlands. Magnificent:) Do you take cruises?
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you too get to sail around Fiordland one day it really is our favourite place!
Stewart Island was my favourite particularly Pegasus, south cape and east harbour. Climbing Gog and MaGog walking the tin mine trail were also high lights if Our Trip. Boat is Southern Cross from Mana. Will keep an eye out for you in the sounds. Keep up the adventures.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. We were in Mana for three weeks earlier this year. Prior to heading north. We’ll have to keep an eye out for you when we get back!
Brings back memories, did very same trip in 1999 from Lyttelton to Stewart island and back on month long adventure, at the time I owned “Esperanza “ a 42 foot off shore racer/ cruiser, have had 3 diving trips to Stewart island over the years, we are so lucky to have access to this beautiful wilderness. Nice presentation, would be good to have some personal dialogue. Kind regards Alan Inglis.
Thanks Alan. Stewart Island and Fiordland are quite special.
Yes, we did tour the S Island. We hauled out in Nelson, and rented a car. It was interesting, but not the same as sailing. We are 80 years old now, and sail on a lake in SC once or twice every week. Years ago, we also cruised the East Coast of the US and the Carribean. We ALMOST stayed in NZ in 1981, but we had our young son with us and family back here. About 5 years ago we flew to NZ to find and thank the many people who were so kind and generous to us on our two sailing visits, and luckily found them alive and well!
Excellent videos, thank you. Wife and sailed to NZ from E coast of US (twice) many years ago. We sailed around the N Island on our second trip, but not the south. Love your work, and still photos are incredible! NZ has the finest PEOPLE in the world!
Thanks, that is very kind and sorry you didn’t get down and around the South Island. Credit to Jude for the still photos! Hope you are still sailing, I presume you are based on the E coast of the US?
What sort of yacht is it looks a bit like chico 40
Hi there. It is a Wauquiez Centurion 41S. Built in 1996. My later videos show some more details of Amelie.
I heard my first Bell bird on Stewart. I’ll never forget it.
Just wondering what you do for a job as you seem very practical ie solar arch and alternator bracket etc are you doing a planning departure video cheers rob
Cheers Rob, mostly a lifetime of fixing and making things. Danger is spending more time doing that than sailing. Departure planning video sounds like a challenge.
very informative ,pleasant trip cheers rob nz
Cheers Rob.
Great video, thanks :) Why would someone leave that drill bit in there ? !!! Your welding looks excellent ! Regards, John.
Ah yes. The drill bit. I found it when I pulled the cable out from the wind generator mast tube. I guess someone drilled a hole in the tube and the bit broke and couldn’t be retrieved. Just as well it didn’t short the output from the wind generator!
As for the welding, by the time I had finished the frame I was about practised enough to weld consistently. Bit tricky welding outside in difficult positions but time will tell as to the quality!
@@jrtxk I'm amazed it didn't short out !!!
Awesome !!! You have done a lot since I saw you in Waikawa ! She looks amazing :) Kind regards, John.
Cheers John. It was to meet you and I look forward to having a look at the work you are doing on your launch when we get back!
@Sailing Amélie Thanks, was great to meet you too. Sing out if you would like crew at any point 🙂
glad to see you guys back ,always enjoy good nz content cheers rob nz.

Hej. Nice views! Could Y tell more story about the trip, the boat? In English if possible. Thanks.
I’m putting some videos out now about the boat and the upgrades we have made to her. If you want a bit of the story behind the trip around the South Island then you are welcome to check out our travel blog the link of which is: forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/Amelie?mapMode=useAtlas&windSymbol=WindStreamlines&weatherSource=ECMWF Enjoy.
Wow. I am a NZ'er but have never been to that part of my country. It really is stunning and it is great to see it through the eyes of you guys.
Well this is just lovely.
We were at anchorage cove in George Sound as well! And ALSO had the same massive swarm of sandflies as I can see on your camera. Annoying! The only downside to this incredible location
This series is one of the most inspiring I have seen in terms of sailing NZ
Thanks John, that is very kind of you. Since this trip we have been busy getting Amélie ready to go offshore so I hope to post some more videos soon.
Amazing trip! Want to do it with my kids too!
Great video! Do you still own the boat? I was a bit surprised to click the blog link and find Amelie is on her way from Hong Kong to Taiwan!
I’m a bit surprised as well, given I am sitting on her now in Havelock! Must check the blog link??
@@jrtxk Hahaha! Methinks the tracking might be confused - there are a few Amelies across the world.
Around 14,oo it would be very rare to get heavy rain down there, wouldn't it???
Only about 7m of rain per year.
Fiordland is one of the rainiest places in the world.
I am so impressed how our country looks, especially with the quality of photographer. With a drone it give a different perspective, and shows us part of nZ we din't normally see. That's made it worth watching the whole series so far. Blue.
Thanks Blue and pleased you enjoyed the footage, particularly the “drone” shots…….
How sad that 746 people watched this and only 23 can be bothered to press like! Excellent thanks, and now I don't feel I have to see Port Pegasus in person.
Great series, thank you! After visiting many of those places in the last 18 mths it was great to see them again through someone else's eyes and especially the underwater views.
What an awesome series for this trip! Thank you both for this wonderful series of video and look forward to some more maybe!
Just brilliant! Hope to see you out there one day. Cheers Rick
Wow Folks! I gotta go back there again, I missed so much great stuff. Thanks so much for sharing all this. I've just binge watched the first two parts, really looking forward to the rest. Cheers 😃
Hi there Sailing Taranto, great to hear from you, as we followed your journey around the South Island a few years back and really enjoyed your story. Might see you out on the water some time!
@@jrtxk Thank you, oh it would be wonderful to be able to return to NZ and my faithful Taranto! But alas the gates are repeatedly slammed in my face. One day when the NZ Govt sees fit to allow the rest of us to return, I may get the opportunity to see you folks on the water. That would be great. Meanwhile Port Pegasus in part 4 was epic! Love the reflections. I really must go back, that wilderness looked superb, I'm inspired! Cheers.
Omg i loved watching the lot id love to do a trip like that i have a lotus 9.2 in Nelson
Allow plenty of time and watch the weather and you’ll have a great trip in your lotus, it’s just round the corner for you!
Very cool. I spent a year in NZ on a holiday working visa and loved my time there. I did not get out on the water aside from the ferry to the south island (in a severe gale!) and the foot passenger ferry to Stewart Island (also in a gale!), but hope to sail there some day. Something interesting; the NZ marine charts you show at the start appear identical to the format of Canadian charts! They look so familiar. Cheers from BC, Canada.
Enjoy the rest of the videos. It’s a spectacular part of the world and I hope you too get the opportunity to sail here one day. We have plans to visit your backyard and sail around BC one of these days and get to explore another spectacular region!
Amazing. I hope to see it myself some day....
I love your videos! They are so peaceful and relaxing and absolutely gorgeous! I hope to learn to sail someday and find vistas even half as beautiful as yours
Thanks and I am pleased you are enjoying the videos. It is a beautiful part of the world!
So looking forward to taking our yacht down to Fiordland! Really enjoying these videos. The sandflies look as though they might be a challenge though
Don’t worry about the sandflies, they were much less of a problem than we anticipated - just take plenty of repellant and few yards of netting and tape and you’ll be good as gold. Where are you based?
@@jrtxk good to know :) We’re based in Wellington at the moment
Lovley!
Could have made this an hour long! awesome
Good stuff. So many questions! Was that an outgoing tide when you left Otakou? Or just classic, lumpy Tairoa Head?
Hi there Grant, It was top of the tide and just turning, so we were a bit surprised by the lumpy seas! Wouldn’t want to do it with an outgoing tide and a NE blowing!
What an excellent trip ! Gosh, you seemed to get a lot of overcast, wet weather - a good job you didn't go in winter !!! Next trip, North Island ? Regards, John.
Hi there John, yes North Island is on the cards and maybe we won’t need our wet weather gear quite so much!
@@jrtxk 🤣 Let me know if you would like some company on one of the legs 😀
For sure John, not sure when we plan to go but keep in touch.
@@jrtxk All good. Feel free to stalk me on facebook - I have done a little bit of sailing before 🤣
John Lord. They ONLY get 200 inches of rain down the sounds each year. Possibly less falls during the winter.. Great videos aren't they.
hi guys loved the videos! what model is your yacht any details cheers rob
Thanks Robert, Amelie is a 1996 Wauquiez Centurion 41S and we are the third owners.
Many thanks for the superb scenic footage ... just fantastic! Can you recommend a good info source for Fiordland?
Have a look at the “Tenaya” website, they have a very useful document on cruising around NZ with plenty of good info on Fiordland. If you would like to have a chat about tips and tricks for Fiordland and Stewart Island then let us know.
@@jrtxk Very helpful thanks ... not a website I knew so now enjoying researching!
So damn good to watch. Where are you both based?
Thanks I’m pleased you’re enjoying the videos. NZ’s an awesome place! We’re based in Christchurch and Amelie is berthed up in Havelock.
@@jrtxk We are based in Christchurch too. Currently at the boat research stage. So much to know, decide and learn. If you ever happen to at Naval Point we would love to share a coffee and a chat.
Hi there, we’ll be at Naval Point this Thursday evening for the talk on the Sub Antarctic Islands if you wanted to catch up.
@@jrtxk Fantastic that would be so good. We look forward to saying hallo.
Hi folks this series is really inspiring. Thank you for sharing. What a country we have to live in.
Was that a thresher milling around?
Yes, a seven gill shark! Sort of put me off swimming for a bit.
Great, thank you. Looking forward to the next episode !
Gosh, you have seen a lot of rain on this trip !!! Good job you didn't go in winter !!! Another great video, thank you.
Your drone has hairy legs !!! I'm enjoying your voyage, thank you ! What design is your yacht ? Kind regards, John. Wellington. SO 45.
Thanks John and apologies for the drone, it was cheap...our yacht is a 1996 Wauquiez Centurion 41S.
@@jrtxk Ha ha !!! I used my drone seriously for the first time in the Queen Charlotte Sound at Easter. Yook some great footage 😊 Awesome !!! They are beautiful yachts 😃 Where are you based ? Not the best day for sailing here today - will watch another couple of your episodes tonight 😀
@@johnlord7854 QCS is close to home. We live in Christchurch and Amelie is berthed at Havelock. It’s a bit of a drive but it’s nice being based in the sounds. What sort of drone did you get?
@@jrtxk Great ! I bought a DJI Mavic Air. Very compact, and great quality footage 😃 Yes, quite a hike from Chch to Havelock ! How often do you get up ?
