Tom's Woodworking and Carpentry
Канада
Добавлен 7 окт 2011
Hey, fellow makers and DIY enthusiasts! Welcome to the channel! I’m Tom, and though I’m not a professional woodworker, my background is in metal fabrication and mechanical design. After 20 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, I’ve gained an appreciation for precision, patience, and a good sense of humor!
Woodworking started as a hobby-a way to relax, get creative, and work on something different from metal tools. Surprisingly, the skills I developed in metalwork-measuring carefully, solving problems, and applying a fabrication mindset-have been incredibly useful in woodworking.
What can you expect? A bit of everything! From woodworking projects to cabinetry and furniture refinishing, plus handy tips along the way. Mistakes? Plenty-but that’s part of the learning experience. This is a shared journey, and I’m here to learn, grow, and share right alongside you!

Applying Rubio Monocoat to Cherry Epoxy Wood
Is this woodworking ASMR or something?
What do you mean?
Interesting.
Thank you 🙏
Maybe adding the Bow Products fence to it would fix the fence issue
I will take a look at their products. Thanks for the suggestion.
do you think this will work with a shop vac
A shop vac doesn’t have enough volume to properly extract from that distance. However, if you make the dust hood a little smaller and move it closer, it will remove some dust. I would try it and see. Cheers
Just purchased wood today, here in New Hampshire. Cherry was $7.50 BF, Hard Maple was $8.95 BF and Walnut was $14.45 BF.
Those are decent prices. What are you building?
@@Toms_Woodworking_and_CarpentryUSD prices I suspect
looks awful
Thank you 🙏
Nice idea. And looks like a fun, quick shop project. That's always satisfying.
Thank you! I don’t normally film those quick shop projects as I usually quickly put them together so I can go on working on my main project, but I thought it would be helpful to the community. Cheers
What are the dimensions of this table?
The dimensions are 20” x 40” x 2”.
@@Toms_Woodworking_and_Carpentrythank you I’m building a table like this just an inch so a half thick instead
@@travisblogstravis4367 Very nice!
Very cool!
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Really nice job on this. It was really hard to get a sense over all of the table from the video though.
Thank you! 🙏. It’s was difficult to show all the table from the vertical aspect ratio as I originally filmed the build in landscape for a long form RUclips video. You can see more detail on my channel.
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment! I gave this table to my mom for Christmas last year.
The wood looks good but the metal table ruins the whole idea behind it. Looks like it belongs in an office. Just sayin …
Thank you. I built it for my mom for a Christmas gift, and I already had the legs. She also loves the look of the metal.
Came out really nice
Thank you 🙏
What grit sandpaper please?
I used 120 - 220. I have a longer form video on my channel if you’re interested. Cheers.
Why TF that shit 2x4 legs?
I used metal legs that I already had in my shop. Thank you for commenting! Cheers
They make 2x4s out of metal in your area? damn
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful work. The only observation is to be careful with the miter saw. The piece between the blade and the stop-block has to be secured, whereas the off-cut can float. If the former gets pinched, it can create kickback.
Great observation! Thank you for the advice!
What Garbage
Thank you!
Your afro is fantastic. Also, thanks for the great advice. My wife is an avid woodworker, and this is going to be an amazing anniversary gift!
Ahaha 😂 thank you for the Afro comment! Thanks for watching and I hope your wife loves her new Festool sander. Cheers
What spray did you use? The audio was very clear.
Hello. I used spray nine between passes to degrease the surface. I did this to increase the life of my sandpaper.
Nice job! I think I'd start with Boeshield Rust Free to reduce the iron oxide (just because I keep it in my shop), then onto sanding and paste waxing, just like you did. Rust Free would work well in your miter slots, but would still require a bronze wire wheel (softer than iron, harder than rust).
Awesome tip, thank you very much!
Reminds me I should always get a cast-iron table saw.
What saw do you have?
@@Toms_Woodworking_and_Carpentry A DeWalt hybrid. Good enough, but the surface is just plate.
Looks great Was there still rust in the one miter slot
Hello. I need to get in there with a wire brush. Thanks for commenting!
Wow! What a transformation, well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Great work! So satisfying!
Thank you! 😊
What magnets did you use?
I bought 1/4 inch neodymium magnets which I purchased from Amazon.
I have the Milwaukee ROS and decided to go with the 150 Festool sander for faster rough sanding. First thing I noticed is that the difference in vibration is minimal. After 15 to 20 minutes of sanding the switch failed and I had to finish the project with my Milwaukee sander. Festool is in for repair. Don’t think I will be buying many more expensive green and white tools.
Hi Scott, thank you for sharing. I don’t have experience with the Milwaukee, just the dewalt and Festool.
Indiana $9.50 bf for Walnut and $5.50 bf for Maple. That's US
Great prices compared to Canada. Is that considered a good price in the US?
Per non aver scritto i materiali e misure.
Hi Tom, Have you tried KJP Hardwoods in Ottawa for your lumber? Awesome selection!
Hello, yes I purchase my wood between the Woodsource in Manotick and KJP. I find the quality of selection at the Woodsource better than KJP. This is primarily due to KJP’s pallets of raw wood being picked through for the best pieces by customers. I do find that KJP has more exotic selection though and I love the fact that you can purchase tools as well.
I don't get the Festool is only worth it for "pros" argument, as a DIYer doing house renovations I wish I had invested in decent tools sooner. A TS 60 was my first upgrade into Festool, the time it saves in quicker, more accurate cuts and dust cleanup is worth it over the few hundred saved from the DeWalt saw I was using prior. I also have that same DeWalt sander, I dislike the vibrations and the dust collection is terrible (dust is a huge issue if you don't have a dedicated workshop and have to sand in your living space), the power button is mushy and often difficult to turn off once started. Wish I had just gone with a Festool from day one. Buy cheap, buy twice..
It’s definitely not only for the pros as I am a hobbyist as well. I totally have the same philosophy when it comes to buying cheap means buying twice. Thank you for commenting. Cheers
I found my 125/3 vibrates more then my RTS
I haven’t tried that one.
Those cards aren't worthy of that box. You need special cards for a box that nice.
Thank you. Cheers
What brand of sanding disk do you use?
I used Festool granite and finished with 3M. I am trying the 3M as it was highly recommended by my viewers.
Loved the end result. Would like to know what products were used.
Thank you 😊. I used Rubio Monocoat charcoal colour with an activator.
How did you get the lighter and darker look out of the same boards?
That’s a great question, I wondered the same. Maybe it’s from alternating the pieces giving it a different angle for lighting would be my guess.
I just did the same thing 2 weeks ago only the crack was so deep, I cut it in half on the crack line. Glued it back together, sanded to 220. Good as new.
Did you have to flatten the board as well? What method did you use?
@@Toms_Woodworking_and_Carpentry It wasn't too bad. Belt sander with 50 grit.
@@thedoorguycharlie I need to purchase a portable belt sander. They are pretty versatile.
@@Toms_Woodworking_and_Carpentry I've used one my whole life. I'm 71 so that's a long time. Pick up a Ryobi. I've got an 18''. Big enough for what I do.
Don't judge me on the Ryobi brand... I like nice stuff, Bessy parallels.. yes I have them. But there has to be priorities. Just scored some Rockler Sure Foot, 8 of them for half price, with pipe!!! Used them today on a mock up 18x24 end grain board with Doug Fir (don't want to screw up some nice hard maple). Have a Ryobi 18 ga nailer that does the job and recently picked up the Ryobi hot glue gun. Works better than my wife's little hobbie corded one. Thanks for your content. looking fwd to more.
Dewalt 735 and I love it. I would have raised the grain after 180 grit. Then 220...but you know that.
I was looking at the Dewalt 735 as it has great reviews. I went with the Craftex because it was on sale and it looked identical to the Rikon. I love the thickness stop block. Thanks for sharing!
I need to make a 18x24 end grain, min 2'' thick for a customer and checked the price pbf a couple hours ago. Rock Maple 8/4 is $6 US. And that's CA.
Thank you for sharing, Is that expensive where you are? Cheers
I new to this so me reading the prices my be off but went to homedepot for walnut. Is was expensive $9. Then went to hardwood store and paid $3 bf on walnut
Do you have a video for how you made the cross cut sled that you use?
I don’t have a video, but I can definitely make one as I want to make a better one. Thanks for asking.
@@Toms_Woodworking_and_Carpentry yeah I'd really appreciate one. I like the work you do! I'm going to make my husband a cutting board using your video, but I will be changing the dimensions to 24"x18" (he wants an extra large one for his brisket cooks). I don't have a planer so we'll see how it turns out. Thanks again!
Thanks Tom. I do woodworking as a hobby and use Festool’s tools. When it comes to the price you are right it is high. But I compare it to a couple of concert tickets since it is so enjoyable to work with Festool tools.
Great point! It is definitely a matter of perspective. Thanks for watching.
What polish compound are you using for the buff
Originally I used the Osmo Polyx White, but left white residue in the walnut and didn’t look good on closer look. I should have bought the Osmo Clear polyx. I ended up sanding off the finish and using rubio Monocoat pure which I already had in my shop. I made another video explaining my mistake so others wouldn’t make the same mistake. Thanks for watching, much appreciated.
Hi Tom, if I'm to tell you the truth I think that Epstein probably didn't end himself. Nice woodworking.
Thanks 👍
Would it have been easier to apply finish to the parts before assembly? Leaving the back unfinished for the glue up.
I thought of it but I didn’t want to get any finish on the glue surface and I knew that I would be sanding all the pieces flush with each other. Thank you for the question.
Hey beautiful woodworking, great for DIY too. Just one question though. Won't the hook hit the wall and leave marks over time?
You are correct, it does touch the wall. I will modify the design if I make more. For now it works fine on my wall and I may just add bumpers. Thanks for the question.
Looks good!
Thank you. I made it with offcuts from other projects. Cheers
Hope you flatten it properly. I'm sure that palm sander didn't do it.
Yes, the sander did a decent job. If I were making many boards as a business, I would invest un a drum sander.
I understand.
Came out great Bro!
Thank you! It was a fun project.
