The Elna 1 nicknamed the "Grasshopper" was designed by Spanish engineer, Dr.Ramon Casas Robert and a working prototype had been completed by 1934. Because of the Spanish Civil War, he emigrated to Switzerland to continue development of the machine. It was never given an official name or model number by Elna but collectors have given it the designation, Elna 1. They were produced from 1940-1952. I have one of these machines restored to full sewing function. They are amazing machines and were a paradigm shift in domestic sewing machine development with its free arm function. I was so happy to see your avant-garde video of a piece of industrial art, the Elna 1 "Grasshopper". Mark.
Thank you for your comment. I live near what was once the Elna factory in Geneva, wich no longer existe of course. And... oups, sorry for taking that long to reply ;-) aal

I think it's from the 40's, they stopped producing this model in the 50's (I could be wrong). Amazing machine, my favourite so far.
released in '57 ;)
@@xchar61x no way... They stop making them back in 52, the 57 model is the Supermatic
