How to use the Whiteside Inlay Router Kit Step by Step Revisited
I make another wooden letter inlay step by step with the Whiteside Inlay set.
Step 1 create the template. This step is using the kit without the 1/8" spacer Be sure to maintain pressure against the letter pattern
Step 2 create the inlay. This also uses the kit without the spacer, you will be duplicating the pattern shape only out of your inlay material. Here it is important to maintain pressure against the template.
Step 3 cutout the work piece to accept the inlay. this uses the kit with the spacer. You can be more careless in that you are removing all of the wood within the template area.

Make and level a Natural Birch end grain cutting board with shop made jig
Просмотров 5317 часов назад
Natural Birch is really just a color designation for birch which is a native hardwood. Natural Birch will contain both the sap wood (white birch) and the heart wood (red birch). This board is made up of end-grain natural birch which gives it the good looking pattern and variation on the surface. The leveling jig was my attempt to avoid the time it would have taken to sand the board smooth. // A...

Good explanation. Try putting dental floss or fishing line across the pocket to do the test fit so you can easily pull it out without it getting stuck .
Your clear and vivid explanation shows how thoroughly you understand this concept. Other videos here don't even come close - thank you🙏
Thanks If you’re interested here is a more recent video. How to use the Whiteside Inlay Router Kit Step by Step Revisited ruclips.net/video/xZZu7yN9HWI/видео.html

Quality stuff, thanks been searching for something like this 👍🏾
Thanks. Fun to make and easy. Thanks for watching
Seems tedious but the result is fantastic.

Great video, great explanation and graphics. I recently bought a sawmill so now I know how to cut and what to call it 😄

Excellent idea. And a beautiful end grain reveal too!
Thanks. The oil in the beeswax mixture really penetrates and brings out the grain color differences.
where'd you get the round containers?

Great explanation! This concept, for whatever reason, is difficult to get one’s mind around. Thanks!
Thanks. Btw I just did another short on that inlay kit.

I’ve been trying to envision a jig like this and kept getting lost in what is actually a simple concept. Your design and this video has now got the concept aligned in my vault 😅. I love the fact that this jig wastes little motion or time to get the job done. Thanks for taking the time to share your craft ❤

If I want this shelf to hold a decent amount of weight, is this an acceptable option? Should I bulk up the size of the wood supports? Say 2x2 or something?
Thanks for the comment I spaced mine every other stud so 32” apart. You could double the weight capacity by putting them 16” O.C. Thanks again
Thank you so much!! BEST explanation ever!!
Thanks for the nice comment and thanks for watching
Very well done thank you.
Thanks About to start another inlaid box myself Thank you for watching
Well done,I'm sure Leonard Bailey designed this to hold a square edge card scraper as you show.I have square edges on my 12,112 and 212 with great results.
Thank you for the comment I agree. Like everything sharpness is what matters most. Thanks for watching
A couple of questions: --The outside beech trim.....it would need to start out maybe 3/4 x 1/2, yes? Then you cut a rabbet in it so it fits onto a rabbet on the face of the main box, then hangs over inside the main box a bit so it can hold the glass.....right? Your pencil drawing at 7:21 in the video shows 1/4 x 1/2 with a 5/16 rabbet, but that appears to be a mistake, because 1/4 would be too thin. Right? --The trim has to hang over inside the main box to hold the glass? --The inner box would have to start out as thicker, then use dado blades to cut it to the shape you show in the video....? If I am viewing it right, the inner box pieces look thinner on the side behind the clock face and a little thicker between the clock face and the glass, yes? --How much space did you leave between the glass and the clock face? Thanks
Thanks for the comment. I would have to measure the finished clock to see how close I came to those pencil dimensions but I think it's pretty close. The over hang to capture the glass can be 1/4" or even less as long as you can get the glass cut accurately. The inner box is dadoed to give the face something to rest against. the space between the face and the glass is 1/2" on this clock. It is a bit dependent on the brand of movement you use. some have a longer stem that require even more room to prevent the movement from touching the glass. Thanks again
Which would you rather have, the 80 or no 12?
Thanks for the comment. I have both but find myself using the 80.
@@makingthings1463 any particular reason? I've been looking to get either one and thought the 12 would be more stable because of the larger soul and able to push easier because of the larger mass. Thanks for the help btw.
Love the Bluegrass
Thanks. Thank you for watching
Also, are new blades ok with the old model?
No, the blades are not interchangeable
just bought a old 9-1 for 30€, mostly because of the lateral adjustment , didn't got it yet, hope it will be decent tho.. also the adjustment system just look interesting haha
Thanks for the comment, you will like the 9 1/2 it’s a classic. No the blades are not interchangeable, thanks again for watching.
@@makingthings1463 thanks for the reply, i hope the blade will be in good condition then :)
Yup, just got it today, was flat already, needed barely no work, i love it already, fit well in my hands, and really good surface, but sadly previous owner did a back bevel on the blade way to wide for me.. beside that everything is great.
Well done, thank you!
Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching
Turned out nice! Now I’m not too worried about thinking my board is too thin.
Thank you for the comment, I agree I think in some ways they are better because they are lighter and it is not as though you are chopping on them you’re just slicing bread, etc. thanks again for watching
@@makingthings1463 absolutely! Also the wax can seep all the way through.

Can't watch this video due to the irish jig music, it is very distracting! Can't read the transcript and watch the video at the same time either. This may have been an excellent video but for the music. I mostly only subscribe to videos with no music.
You missed out. The music did not continue through the important part of how to use the inlay kit.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Thanks
Mine was sold at Montgomery Wards store, when new.... IF your left thumb is sore after using this, just the way this work..

Nice work. I’m just doing my toes into woodworking but have always dug FLW designs both in architecture and furniture. I Appreciate your thorough walkthrough on these two pieces of furniture!

Do you have a diagram of power to a light with a leg coming from a light to the middle switch in a 4 way system?
Thanks for the comment. Sorry, but I haven't given that scenario any thought. I would bet there is a way. Best to ask an electrician friend or work through it logically yourself. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for a very well explained inlay video.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Great video! Thanks for posting. I am currently making two large picture frames for my daughter and the only tool I have to make rebates is a router. As others have said, it is very noisy, very messy and takes quite a bit of time to to set up. I have ordered a second hand 78 and hope it is in good condition and not needing too much work to get in shape. If not, I'll have to go full retail! 😢. It is such a pleasure to use good, well tuned hand tools rather than painfull and expensive power tools.
Thanks for the comment. They both have their place but I agree. Sharp hand tools are a pleasure to use. Thanks again
Nice!
Thank you for the kind comment

Calling rift grain rift sawn is a super common .istake, so common that actoss the whole in dustry it is now standard to use it wrong. Riftsawing is where all boards are cut radialy to the log, which means the rings are all at 90 degrees. This is the most stable cut of wood that can be made, but also there is lots of waste. I'm convinced that lumber yards intentionaly use the term wrong so they can charge more for plain and quarter sawn lumber that has rift grain.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Here is a question many may wonder. Is quarter saw floor joist, or rift sawn floor joists or plain sawn floor joists stronger and able to carry more floor load?
Thanks for the comment My gut would tell me the plain sawn joist would be stronger. There are engineering tables that will address this question. Would be interesting to look at sometime. Thanks for watching
Whats better about it compared to a 78?
Thanks for the comment. May be overstated when I said could be better than a 78. It is a little shorter than the 78 and if you are using a clamped on fence, it has everything the 78 has minus that secondary blade placement that frankly have never used on my 78. Thanks for watching
Wonderful
Thank you for the nice comment and thanks for watching
I bought a #93 about 30 years ago for a woodworking class I took. Today it seemed like the right tool to correct some binding casement windows. Having not used my #93 in awhile, I was a bit rusty on how to adjust the plane. Over the course of an hour I figured it out, but this video would have got me there sooner, plus this video reminded me of some other things the #93 can do. The original poster's narrative style could not have been more to the point.
Thank you for the nice comments. I'm glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching.
