    I wander if you got this as a kit feom some plaxe or if you just bought plans (blueprints) and made up your own kit🤨 I cannot find kits at a reasonable price anywhere.

    Wish I had seen this video a bunch of years ago! I do exactly as you do after lots of false starts and screwed up leading edges over the years. Key is never to remove the center line guide during the shaping. I apply duct tape to the ribs near the leading edge during final sanding to ensure the rib shape is not changed.

    Hi Chuck I just wanted to you have done a really amazing job on the build and finish of your Riley Model B. I can only aspire to be able to build planes as good as what you have .People like you with your wealth of knowledge are few and far between.

    Hey Chuck My name is Brian. I found one of your models on Craigslist here in Pittsburgh. It's missing the engine cowl and wheel pants. Where could I find those and or instructions on building them. I hope you find this message. Thank you Brian

    Fred Jaimeson, founder of Master Airscrew designed and made those planes. He was one great guy....You can buy these planes from Master Airscrew at masterairscrew.com, under Building Tools....Best of building..

    Save time and hack off all that excess with a little Zona saw first before planing. Then finish with the plane - lots faster!

  • @sotm6078
    @sotm6078 4 года назад

    Be a lot faster to use a Zona saw to remove most of that excess before you go to the razor plane for final shaping.

    some late info. at 1:52, Obviously, the "thickness' of the LE component Must Reduce, towards the wingtip; otherwise the profile becomes wonkified. googletranslate

    Are the wings basically the same airfoil at the root just longer? I'm curious if they would essentially be interchangeable. Between short and long.

    • @chuckgratner8859
      @chuckgratner8859 5 лет назад

      David, The wings on the Series 11 and the Series 13 are very similar, but not interchangeable. The major difference is the increase from 108 to 118 inches in wing span. This also decreases wing loading slightly. The Series 11 flies very well. The "current" model Series 13 has not been flown yet. But we should have a pretty good idea whether there is an improvement after Joe Nall in May. Thanks! Chuck

    Fantastic project, Mr. Gratner. I sell plywood in Brazil and looking at the plywood in this aircraft, it is just amazing. May I know what kind of plywood is that used for the caves of this plane? One more time, my congratulations for this perfect project.

    • @chuckgratner8859
      @chuckgratner8859 6 лет назад

      Renato: I use 3mm Lite Ply for most of the formers, and 6mm Lite Ply for the cowl ring and F1. I believe it is manufactured in Italy. I purchase most of my plywood from Aircraft Spruce.

    • @RenatoPt19
      @RenatoPt19 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your reply, Mr. Gratner. I visited the aircraft Spruce site....but I want to be a distributor for some plywood like that here in Brazil....and their prices are for final costumer . But anyway, thank you so much and please.....always post your building videos, the best and well explaned I watched. It will be a pleasure to see more of your work. Have a perfect weekend and thanks again.

      @@chuckgratner8859 .. I only found 4x8 sheets of 3mm & 6mm lite ply on that web site. Is that what you bought 4x8 ?

    Is it best just to do it in sections until you get everything down to a certain thickness, then sand it the final way? Its pretty satisfying watching you do that. My first balsa plane was a Cessna and it was much smaller. I thought it came out pretty good for a 17 year old that didnt know much about building an RC plane.I build plank on plank Wooden ship models as well as other projects. I took advanced wood working in highschool but found out I liked working on the lathe. My project earned me third place in my department but first in design. I wish now I had build something more delicate but back then, it was cabinets and clocks. I made wooden bowls. There was no one else in my field or department, so easy first place. I still like working with wood, but my hands are starting to fail me.

    • @chuckgratner8859
      @chuckgratner8859 6 лет назад

      RC: I am more comfortable shaping the leading edge "all over" rather than one section at a time. But that's just the way I like to do it. If shaping one section at a time is easier, then by all means, do it that way. Either way, you should get to the same place. Thanks! Chuck

    How did you mark a perfect leading edge datum as drawn in your video?

    • @chuckgratner8859
      @chuckgratner8859 6 лет назад

      Nick, the leading edge, before it is shaped, is 1/2" x 2" balsa. The datum line, which is also the chord line in this model, is on-center. Does that make sense? You will find the complete build at www.gratnerbrothers.com Thanks! Chuck

    I usually put some masking tape on each rib before sanding. :) Thanks for sharing

    • @kev.j.goodwin8612
      @kev.j.goodwin8612 6 лет назад

      Agree. No matter how careful you are, it's very easy to inadvertently sand a flat on the ribs behind the LE. Even a few stray strokes can mishape the ribs and distort the aerofoil section.
