VG

Hello, Mr. Ness! I've been searching (and listening to) RUclips for Johannus LiVE organ videos for a long time, as I intend to buy a new organ myself (I have an old Viscount and I really like the LiVE 2P), but I only came across your channel yesterday. So much for RUclips's algorithms!! 🤦♂ I really like your performances. It can be seen that you enjoy your organ! While I'm by no means a technical expert, are there ways to improve the audio quality of your videos to make them even better? I am delighted with Johannus' new LiVE samples. However, when it comes to LiVE 2P/3P organs, I notice that they have the weakest audio system of all LiVE organs. LiVE 2P/3P have a 2.1 audio system with 3 speakers with 2 x 80W amplifiers and a 170W subwoofer (total power 330W). On the other hand, in addition to having as many as 7 speakers, the lower LiVE 2T/3T models have a much stronger 6.1 audio system: 4 x 80W amplifiers + subwoofer (total 510W). So the flagship models 2P/3P have an audio system like the entry-level Johannus (Studio) models. Although this "Positive" organ looks beautiful, no model has as few speakers (3) as the Johannus LiVE 2P/3P. For what reasons did you get the LiVE 3P and not, say, the 3T model? LiVE-samples and P-models are beautiful, but considering the above, how satisfied are you with the power of your organ? Now, I know that the organ sounds different depending on the room it is in. That being said, and since it's hard to judge via video, I'd like to ask you how the organ sounds in your room? Is the organ "too quiet"? Can it solidly fill a room even if played with a low number of registers?
Hello, thanks very much for the feedback. I have in fact not spent much time comparing options, I found a Johannus retailer store very nearby my house and just followed the recommendation of the guy. Also, I didn't have the (time) resources to build my own Hauptwerk system - and I admire all those having gone through all the work and effort. Actually, I also had a smaller Viscount before (still have it in fact). The sound in the room is absolutely fantastic, even better than the recordings via the AUX socket. Also with a low number of stops, the organ fills my living perfectly well. It is possible to increase/decrease the volume, so I see no issues with the power of the sound. Especially the sub-woofers deal extremely well with the 32' stops making the walls shake - like in a real room!. So, I really can't complain about the power of the loudspeaker system! Also the 3D impression is totally satisfactory, and my feeling is the number of loudspeakers does not matter, so much. I think they use sophisticated interference technologies to create a real (Life) sound with a small number of top-quality speakers. When sitting at the console, I can hear really well where the pipes producing the sounds are sitting! There are four listening positions I can choose from (1) Console, (2) Front (3) Center (4) Rear, each a different balance between direct sound and reverb. In the examples I have used the Rear which has the strongest reverb. So, the sound of the instrument is perfect and I am still happy. Things to be less happy about is the rather limited number of instruments, and I sometimes envy the folks on Hauptwerk for the great variety of instruments they have. There is a web page where more instruments can be purchased, but the number of choices is much much smaller than Hauptwerk. I wish they would cut some deal and make Hauptwerk instruments available for Johannus instruments. There are some minor drawbacks that could be better: I have six orchestrals, and I don't recommend the chimes. While highly realistic (like the Dutch Carillons), they are grossly out of tune and I didn't find the time to figure how to tune them better (would need to connect the organ via MIDI to a computer with a Windows operating system). There is no cover to protect the keyboard (like my Viscount has), so 2-3 times per year I have to clean the keys that start turning grey-black, especially those not used a lot. The pedal is connected to the organ via a magnet contact, thus not a wire. If the pedal is a little bit displaced, then it doesn't play, it happened several times that just by sliding onto the bench the pedal got displaced and I had to redo the recording. 3 years and a few days after I purchased the organ, a key was stuck, formally out of warranty, they were courteous enough to pay for the repair (the person had to come again a month later, but since then it is fine). Never had such an incident in the 20years I had the Viscount. Then, tiny nice to haves would be the ability to switch off the lights, practical would be a little drawer for pencils, the control display at the side rather than the main board (the light shines through the papers with the music). This is tiny of course, but given the rather high price one expects perfection to the last detail ;-) But overall: I am very happy with this instrument indeed, and the drawback listed here you could take to ask questions before buying your instrument which are hopefully helpful.
Thank you very much for your detailed answer! I was somewhat worried about this data about the power of the LiVE P models, but I'm glad to hear your positive experiences. In the current offer of organs on the market, the new Johannus organs (especially the LiVE models) sound best in my opinion... For me, the Hauptwerk is out of the question, because it seems to me that it requires a lot of computer knowledge, which I don't have: I'm looking for an organ that, when you turn it on, it sounds good right away. I was considering the new Viscount (Opera 200), but I'm afraid I'd have to spend a lot of time using their Physis+ Editor before I could tune the organ to my liking. Too complicated for me. Therefore, it seems to me, Johannus is a much better choice at the moment. The problem, however, is that most of their organs look "too modern", and actually resemble IKEA Billy shelves ... except LiVE P. Although the sound is, of course, the most important thing, I still feel (maybe that's old-fashioned) that an organ should also look good in a room. And your Johannus LiVE 3P really looks nice! As for organs in Positive consoles, such as yours, that do not have roll-top covers installed, one would expect at least some kind of manual protection: for example, they could come with a suitable cloth (some kind of red silk or velvet cloth comes to mind), which would cover the manuals when not in use... By the way, I don't understand why nowadays even small (low) organs are mostly made without a roll top cover. It used to be the standard, but today they mostly look like IKEA shelves with manuals sticking out! :) As I hear, from this year onwards Johannus LiVE models come with 5 (instead of 2 as previously) samples at the customer's request without additional charge. Utrecht, Amsterdam, Kampen, Dresden and Manchester would be more than enough for my needs! Sorry to hear about the issue with the chimes... I think I heard Dr. Kristina Rizzotto, playing her LiVE 3T, used chimes with the Dresden sample in one of her videos, and it sounded pretty good... Ah, everything can never turn out right for everyone: one key on my old Viscount failed after ten years (it just stopped making any sound). I was lucky to have Viscount's service in the neighborhood (Johannus' is not even in the same city). Anyway, thanks again for your helpful thoughts and experiences. I wish you many more happy moments with your organ! 👍 And be sure to keep posting videos of your performances. You have a new subscriber! I admire your technique, especially pedaling - I don't think my feet will pedal like that in 200 years! 😁
@@MisterNoTrains Regarding Hauptwerk: Same here although it may be possible to get it done with 'normal' computer knowledge and reading instructions in the internet, but it will take an awful long time, and I confirm, and from what I heard from a few reports from those having gone through it, that it needs enormous processor resources to work properly. My instrument is for sure a plug and play, no learning curve, it immediately sounds great, and the configuration is straight forward. When talking to the dealer, there is certainly room for bargaining, not the price but extras for free. So, I got 3 instead of 2 organs, there are in fact slots for give instruments, and one can upload any number of instrument with a USB stick. For me, the three organs I have are also absolutely sufficient, I recently had another look at the catalogue and found that the other ones wouldn't really add much. I would like to have the one from Duesserdorf that Fraser Gartshore as presented a few times where there are two organs playable from one console. Recording a new organ is a huge effort, and I wonder why Johannus doesn't negotiate with Hauptwerk to purchase some of their samples to offer them in their catalogue, be it their are more expensive, but then one has a choice. Maybe they will do it some time.... I will try to get a recording of the Carillon with Dresden so you can form your own opinion. Maybe it sounds better than I remember from last time (which was a long time ago); it may depend on what you play, for Christmas Carols with belly stuff, I found them to sound awful, at least compared to the chimes I have in the Viscount which is artificial while the one in the Johannus is authentic and certainly has a charme. My luck was that a Johannus retailer is not only in the same city but in the same part of town, I could actually go by bicycle! I live in Spain, and that is the only store in all of Spain! But that was only part of my decision, main reason is that Johannus is the pioneer of this technology, they already impressed me in the 1990! At that time I didn't have the money to afford such an instrument..... Thanks for pointing to Kristina Rizzotto, I didn't know this channel and will listen in. Can you send a direct link to the specific recording with the chimes? I totally agree with the "Ikea" appearance, and for me the appearance also matters a lot. The one I have is perfect and it truly decorates the room. It is worth the investment to pay attention to this detail.
@@MisterNoTrains Hello, here now a demo of the chimes with Dresden: ruclips.net/user/shorts9PT4ln-VJDw This is an unlisted link.
Well, now that I've heard the chimes, they really seem to be kind of out of tune... I had this video in mind: ruclips.net/video/3ZbqoPMst4I/видео.html But now that I've heard how the chimes sound, it's obvious that it's not the same supersolo at all. I could be wrong, but maybe she used some other orchestral sound, it sounded noticeably more subtle than these loud bells... In any case, although - as I see on various forums - many purist organists do not like these supersolo sounds at all, but I especially like Johannus's panflute and trumpet very much. And these bells could perhaps only be used in a short introduction to a Christmas carol, not for the whole main melody. But that seems like a minor problem to me though. The LiVE samples sound really great, and your idea of Johannus collaborating with Hauptwerk seems very interesting. This year, the Studio and Opus lines of organs have been revamped, and as I hear from Johannus, at the end of this year they will renew the Vivaldi, and next year the LiVE series will also be revamped. Therefore, you could propose your mentioned idea to them. :) As for me, in my country (I live in Croatia) there are only Viscount and Johannus dealers. Although I also like some other organs (eg Content Mondri 236 and Johannes de Heer Rondeau), getting an organ without a dealer in the country would be a pain, and any subsequent services would be a nightmare. So it seems best to get Johannus. While I would love to see them renew the Vivaldi and LiVE series, I think waiting another year is too long. Who knows what will be here in a year? Maybe ballistic missiles will fly over our heads! ;) Thanks for today's Pizzicati, sounds great!

Ha, I will ask my neighbour whether he wants to sell his house 😂 The sound is not synthesized but sampled from a real organ, in this case Cavaillé-Coll organ in Notre Dame d'Auteuil (Paris). It is an amazing sound, and Johannus has delivered fantastic loudspeakers (still want to be a neighbour? 😜). I have the instrument in my living room so I can also give performances to life audience....
@@januweness The console and casing appears antique, but yes, I know of this ability to sound like any great organ. The Wanamaker Organ was what I grew up around as a boy. It has its own sound. The other gentleman on RUclips who I would very much enjoy being neighbor to to is Mike Reed who is a Master on the Hammond. Do t criticize until you hear him. It’s the peddle work and masterful Stop variants he calls upon as he plays. It may not be your taste, but he recalls my happy youth. I do hope you have full videos of your work.
@@Wanamaker1946 The Wanamaker is of course great, I have not had the privilege to hear it yet, hope my ways will take me to Chicago some time so I can go and hear it. I am very open to other instruments such as Hammond, with the right player it will be authentic. I will go search for him. I am also not much into harmonium, yet this one I really like: ruclips.net/video/5fMbUgXvTGs/видео.html I have full videos in my channel under: www.youtube.com/@januweness
