The Cave Pool Part II
After exploring the river below the Cave Pool for the first time, I returned to fish it again. Then to find a short cut back to the road.

Fishing a new spot
Просмотров 2499 часов назад
After a quick stop to fish the "Cave Pool," I pressed on downstream to check out if I could access a section I could see from the road above. I couldn't get to the spot I had seen without swimming, so I fished it the best I could with the Euro Rod. Next time, I will bring the Streamer Rod as well!

It has been over a year since visiting the "Cave Pool". I quickly fished it and then headed downstream to explore an area I had seen from the road, but not fished before.

A longer video of Euro Nymphing a short, fast run. Not an instructional video, just my way of doing it.
Changing Tactics Pays Off Again!

I watched a decent Rainbow rise up near the far bank occasionally surface feeding, and then sinking down to the depths. I tried a dry fly in the hope of getting an early start to the dry fly season. No luck with that approach. So I reverted to the Euro setup, and dropped down stream to fish up this run. I have again added chapters for those who wish to jump straight to the action. Chapters 00:0...
A Lot of Effort for a Fish

Another bush bash down to a stretch of this river that I haven't visited for over a year. I usually pick up a couple of fish, and this day was no different. Unfortunately I didn't press the record button hard enough on my new action camera, so no footage of the 5.5 pound Rainbow from the first pool. I will run the drone up this section on my next visit, as it is a really pretty stretch. I have ...

Fast Water Euro Nymphing
Просмотров 413День назад
A short clip - Just upstream from the "Never Fail" pool that was featured in the previous video is a small, deep, & fast section that often produces a fish or two. In my opinion, Euro nymphing is the perfect method to fish water like this.
A Visit to "Never-Fail" Pool
Просмотров 2 тыс.14 дней назад
Despite the name, this pool did not produce well for me last season. I'm guessing it is due to a flood filling it with sand. The access track is very overgrown and appears to see little use nowadays. Anyway, I decided to pay it a visit to see if it had improved, and also test my new action camera. This camera should be more difficult for me to accidentally engage the 2X Zoom. Let me know in the...
Ending The Day With A Rainbow

There was another angler fishing this pool as I drove past, so I carried on upstream. On my way home there was no one there, so I decided to see what he had missed. This should be my last video that is accidentally filmed in 2X zoom as I have since ditched that camera.
Distance Euro Casting for a Brown
Просмотров 78314 дней назад
Apologies for another video with my action camera stuck on 2X Zoom. A bit of long-range Euro casting to reach the far side of this pool. My mono leader is around 30 feet (9.2m) long, and my tippet is around 10 feet (3m) extra. For scale, the rod is 10'6" (3.1m) long. A heavy 4.5mm point fly enables these longer casts. Euro nymphing can be effective at a considerable distance.
Early Morning Rainbow

The first pool on a crisp cold morning. I was taking it easy on this day and basically fishing near my car all day. I some how managed to activate the 2X zoom feature on my action camera early on. That's why everything is up close and personal.

This video is a bit longer than my normal videos, so I have made chapters for the less patient to skip sections. Euro Nymphing in a Tight Spot
Просмотров 74421 день назад
Visiting a "difficult to fish" section of the river. There are usually a couple of resident large Rainbows in this section, but the overhanging trees are great at catching tackle. The river narrows, which makes it hard to sneak up on the fish. The 10'6" rod doesn't help either!

Beautiful trout.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Beautiful fish, lovely video! Where ist that river?? Greatings from austria…
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm sure you will understand that I can't name the river, as there will be no fish left fairly quickly. All I can say is it is in the North Island of New Zealand. There are many similar rivers here, but this one is special to me.
Ohhh, on the other side of earth😊! Thanks and tight lines…
The walk back to the road lacked ‘spice’. Where I fish, poisonous snakes, bull moose or man-eating bears always keeps you on your toes! All part of fly fishing for trout here🫨
I have been waiting for someone to ask about snakes or bears. I'm more than OK with not having to worry about being mauled or eaten when stumbling around in our bush 😄. I do wonder about the hazards experienced by trout fishermen in other parts of the globe. The most dangerous thing I regularly encounter is Blackberry vines. These are really only a threat to my waders. Thanks for watching and your comments. Much appreciated.
You walked past most of the pool
Not really. It just looks that way on the action camera. I have to cross this pool at the tail end to be able to fish it. I can easily cover the undisturbed area of this pool that will hold fish from the head of it. The wide angle lens makes it look bigger than it really is.
Fair enough - lovely fish anyway and a delightful spot. Well done.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes, it was a nice, conditioned Brown. They only make up about 5% of the fish in this river and are a welcome change from the Rainbows.
What a beautiful location and a cracking trout! Great video.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It is a fairly unique location. I'll drag the drone along next time to get a different perspective on this gorge.
What a beauty,Just wondering what kind of fly line are you using? It looks super low vis..
Just 12 lb or 5.5 kg mono about 35 feet or 10 meters long. There is a Euro style fly line on the reel, but it doesn't really get to come off the reel spool unless a fish takes off. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching and commenting. PS - The rod is a 10 foot 6 inch or 3.2 meters 3 weight Euro Style.
@TroutSoloNZ Interesting, thank you,I'll definitely be trying it out. We usually use a floating line with a 9 to 15 foot leader or a full sink line with a short 4 ft leader. Your method seems very stealthy, thanks...👍
Yes, it seems to work well. It's not my idea, however. It's just a fairly orthodox Euro Nymphing setup. It relies on heavy tungsten beaded nymphs to carry the cast. I only use two different flies throughout the season. They are both featured in my two fly tying videos. If you are interested, watch those.
@TroutSoloNZ I will definitely check them out, thanks for the insight. Tight Lines.
Started euronymphing last year. It really simplifies nymph fishing, and it is also very productive.
Your videos are so relaxing. Thanks for sharing.

That's a beautiful spot to fish. Great fish.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes it is a beautiful place. The fish are a bonus.
I'm sitting here at home in early December and it's 20 degrees and wind is 25mph. What a refreshing video. Beautiful stream to and a fine catch. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching and your kind comments. I'm guessing your 20 degrees is F, not C? That's cold, for sure. It's early summer here, and dry fly action should start soon. I'm looking forward to giving the Euro rod a rest and heading out with my 5 weight dry fly setup.
Nice. Must have been seen and spooked em at the first spot - only explanation for no hookers.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It's possible I spooked any fish at the first part. I have never seen or hooked one their before, but I can't help fishing it anyway as it looks so fishy 😀. There was a resident Rainbow in the middle of the downstream pool all last season, but I never managed to hook it.
I watch your vids all the way from Canada, always very green with envy.... Our pristine wild trout steams have been ruined by ATV trails everywhere, making formerly inaccessible waters, VERY accessible...
Hi Steve, Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We, too have various threats to our trout streams down here. Not ATV's so much, but there are plenty of other pressures. As anglers, we can't let our guard down for a minute.
I’m from South Island NZ and have started to notice quad bike tracks everywhere and less fish in places no one used to go. All started about two years ago and it’s crazy where they’re getting these ATV’s
Hi, nice video. Quick question what line weight are you using ?
Just 12 lb or 5.5 kg mono about 35 feet or 10 meters long. There is a Euro style fly line on the reel, but it doesn't really get to come off the reel spool unless a fish takes off. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching and commenting. PS - The rod is a 10 foot 6 inch or 3.2 meters 3 weight Euro Style
I watched two of your videos and still haven't heard your voice. Just the sound of nature. beautiful.
Thanks for watching and your comments. I mainly fish alone and try not to talk to myself 😃.
@@TroutSoloNZ I often fish alone myself, but when I hook something like this you'll hear me begging him not to come off, And when it eventually comes off-as they always do- will hear me swear a lot.🤣 it shows that you are calmer and in general a better fisher man.
I had a 50% day last Friday. Hooked 14 only landed 7. Plus, I forgot to record the biggest one that I did land. There might have been some swearing that day.
you need help with your camera angle
Yes. The last three videos were all filmed accidently with 2X zoom enabled on my camera. I have since replaced that action camera, as it was a recurring issue. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nothing like being out fishing that early. It's like the clock turned back twenty million years.
I couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching.
It’s so peaceful, what a nice spot!
Thanks for watching.
love the super heavy breathing mate
Ha ha. Yes, sorry about that. A result of being overweight and under fit. The chest mounted action camera microphone misses nothing 😆.
Im enjoying your videos. Try some catch and cook brother.
I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. I regret I won't be doing any catch and cook videos. I only catch and release nowadays. I have eaten enough over the years. Now, I release them for others to enjoy.😁
Where are you from brother?
Thanks for watching. I'm from New Zealand.
How refreshing! No gawd-awful "music" broken up with useless chatter. The peaceful sounds of nature is one blessing of stream fishing alone.
Thanks for watching and your kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
nice video
Thank you for watching it and commenting.
Maybe this is something that I do not know. Is there any reason why you turned at 0:18 and 0:48 already downstream going fish upstream? I am thinking your right-hand side is shallow, fish is already going in that direction, if you apply the pressure to your right the fight is over. When you turn it to face upstream, the fish is gaining leverage from the power of the stream. All those jumps at 0:42, 1:05, 1:13, 1:33, 1:39, 1:42 are risks that it can release itself. Am I missing something? Nice fish though, congratulations.
I usually turn them upstream towards the faster water at the head of the pool if there is a rapid downstream, logs, or I am unable to follow etc. I use barbless hooks and most of my Euro style hookups are in the upper jaw, right at the tip. These tend to pull if the fish gets too far downstream, and the line angle get too low. I do lose the occasional one when it jumps. They seem more prone to the acrobatics in early spring. Today, all the trout I hooked ran hard and deep, even the smaller ones. Thanks for the feedback. I don't think I will ever stop learning in this pastime. PS - I forgot to mention I only use 3X tippet. This allows me to put some extra heat on a fish and net it fairly quickly, rather than tiring it out on 5 or 6X. This means the fish gets released quickly and has a better chance of survival.
Cool
I'm glad you liked it. I have caught hundreds of trout on that fly in the two years I have been using it. It works all year, and on Browns or Rainbows.
Great video mate! Keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Is this in NZ?
Yes it is.
Nice fish!
Yes, it sure was. I wasn't sure I was going to land that one or break off. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Nice catch! When you are fighting if you apply the pressure towards your right side, you can net it easier and have less risk of losing it.
Thanks for watching and the advice. I will try that next time.
What a gorgeous stream. Nice catch as well!
Thanks for watching and your kind comments.
What size fly line are you using? Im new to the sport and im really curious
I hooked these trout on my Euro Nymphing rod. I don't use a normal fly line. It is just a short length of non-tapered running line and never comes off the reel. The line I cast is just 12 or 15 lb nylon with heavy tungsten bead flies on a length of 3X tippet on the end. It is the weight of the flies that allows it to be cast. I will make a video soon of the setup used as I am getting a few questions about it. If I were fishing a more conventional dry fly or indicator nymph rig, a 9 foot 5 weight rod and Weight Forward Floating 5 weight line would be my choice. I hope that helps answer your question.
@TroutSoloNZ thanks for the info. I won't lie, I am befuddled at all the preferences and choices that people use. However fly fishing just feels like home for some reason
I know exactly how you feel. I only started this pastime three seasons ago. It's a very steep learning curve, indeed. Stick with it, though. It's worth the effort.
@@TroutSoloNZ thanks man. I appreciate it. I have been consistently catching fish but I still wanna learn all the different techniques. I caught a 20in rainbow on a copper john i tied the other day. I'm lucky cause the local river is a three minute walk from my front door.
Sounds like you are well on your way to mastering the art. I have some fishing near my house, but it's not high percentage water for sure. The closest decent fishing is an hour and a half driving, but I don't mind. It feels good to catch one on a fly that you made yourself.
Not too sure how I came across your channel, but glad I did. What a cool spot. Awesome stuff.
Thanks for viewing and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Good technique and got to see the entire thing including the landing . Well done.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed it.
Looks an amazing spot 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. The whole length of the upper reaches of this river is much like this section. Just enough variation to make each section unique in its own way.
Subscribed! Funny how some fish fight more than others regardless of size, look forward to more footage, tight lines from Scotland.
Thank for watching, commenting, and the sub. I'm wondering if the water temperature doesn't have something to do with their fighting response. The last few times I have been fishing almost every fish headed downstream like it had decided to do a dine & dash.
Strong spirited fish……a lovely run to fish under the trees.
Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. Neither of these fish were very big, but both were very keen on exiting this pool downstream with some urgency. This river is extremely picturesque for the full eight kilometres that I routinely fish. That is what draws me back. A full days fishing usually results in me covering only about two kilometres. I have subscribed to your channel and am enjoying your videos. I have just ventured into the world of Streamer fishing, so I'm picking up a few pointers from you offerings. I should be able to add some of my own "streamer" adventures soon. Catch you later.
Great video….just you…catching fish…..no BS commentary…..fabulous….keep them coming.
Thanks for watching and the positive feedback. Rest assured, I will stay with the current format. I have never been comfortable talking to myself while fishing.
Beautiful setting ... beautiful fishing ... You've just got to love NZ river fishing.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, we are truly spoiled for fishing opportunities down here.
i think those may haven a gift from california 100 or so years ago
Thanks for watching. You are correct. Our first Rainbow Trout came from Califironia in 1883. It's fair to say that they seem to like it here 😀.
I purchased a very nice drone for this very purpose, film me fly fishing and I used it twice. It was a pain in the butt. The battery only lasted 20 mins and I spent half my fishing time fucking with the thing. Fuck that. FIshing time is too precious to waste on vanity and some stupid drone. Tight lines.
I really only got it to do scenic shots of the river. The battery only lasts ten minutes. I thought I would have a go filming me fishing. Hooking up was a bonus. Not something I will repeat often. This was my first attempt, and I got lucky. It was already doing a flat battery emergency landing by the time I climbed the bank to land it. I don't mind filming my fishing, as I have the cameras that make it easy, but the fishing does come first. Thanks for watching, and commenting.
@@TroutSoloNZ It would be cool if the thing worked. Tons of time and effort for not much.
I got one those cheap DJI Neo's. Not very good battery life, but reasonably simple to use. It pretty much flies itself. The video quality is just OK though, and it struggles in any wind.
Beautiful place!
Thanks. I think so too.
I could have sworn I was looking at home, Washington state in the US, before I checked your channel and saw this is in NZ. Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks for watching and your nice comments. Visiting Washington State is on my bucket list, along with Alaska. While the North Island of New Zealand has some beautiful areas (and this truely one of them), it pales when compared to the South Island. Stewart Island ( the small island at the bottom of the South Island) is the real gem down here, in my opinion.
Tempted to call that an ocean-run fish based on the spotting. Is this New Zealand?
I'm not sure that the Rainbows ever leave the river. I wouldn't rule it out though. I do get occasional Browns that are very silver rather than the usual dark green tops and golden belly's. I assume these are recently in this river from the sea. Brown Trout are known to self populate some rivers in New Zealand from the sea, including this one. Thanks for watching and commenting.
All B roll is good to have. Yes for drone, though it is another hassle!
Thanks for watching and your comments. I will keep using the drone when the conditions permit.
Enjoyed nature ❤😊 ❤😊 thanks for sharing and please stay connected to learn each other my new friend
Thank you for watching.
Where is this? Beautiful place and sparkling water.
The North Island of New Zealand. Yes, this river is a gem. Thanks for watching.
@@TroutSoloNZ Thanks for uploading!
Tasty lookin guy
Thanks for watching.
Where on this planet is this taking place?
The North Island of New Zealand.
Good looking fish!! Hey, what net is that, with the scale...?
The net is a cheap, unbranded one I picked up a few years ago. I recently replaced the net bag with a rubberized McLeans NZ one. The scale is fairly accurate, but it does stick sometimes. I only stick with it as it fits my belt holster really well. McLeans New Zealand make a similar one, but they are very expensive.
You have a beautiful country; hope to visit it one day. No trout fishing in south Texas, sad to say. Some in stocked streams in the central hill country, but not the same. Most of our fly fishing is for largemouth bass, perch, and saltwater varieties, namely speckled trout and redfish. Tell me about some of your gear used. Looks like a very long leader used. Hard to tell the distance from the camera angle. Wil
Hi Wil, Thanks for watching. Yes, we are spoiled in this country when it comes to trout fishing. We also have Redfinned Perch in many lakes and ponds. My Euro style setup is pretty much all leader. My flyline rarely comes off the reel spool. I use around 30 feet (10 metres) of 12lb mono up to the coloured sighter, then around 10 feet (3 metres) of 3X to the point fly. I have a 3X dropper tag with a second lighter fly running above the point fly up to 2 feet (0.6 metre) higher. The rod is a 10'6" 3 weight Euro specific 4 piece. The reel is a cheap Chinese full cage large arbor one I picked up a couple of years back. The flies are the ones I tied in the two my Fly Tying videos. They are the only nymphs I have used for the last two seasons and have accounted for around six hundred trout. I hope you manage to visit here one day for a fishing holiday. I don't think you would be disappointed.
