Is Creativity DEAD? | Artificial Intelligence Expert Reacts to AI Art
Many are worried about the rise of artificial intelligence (A.I.). This includes creatives. Could A.I. mean the end of human creativity as we know it? At what point have we gone too far with this artificial intelligence?
Dr. Thomas R. Jeffrey is both the host for Help Me Understand as well as a professor at Campbellsville University. His research centers around the uses and implementation of artificial intelligence.

I think honestly ChatGPT has showed us how much busy work we do in school. Because in an actual job for example you wouldn’t have to do nearly as much stuff as schools give us for assignments. Especially in high school but in all honesty I’m scared for our generations kids. Growing up with ChatGPT I do have kids I’m going to introduce them to ChatGPT they will most likely find out about it but I’m going to try and teach them and raise them without AI

Suicide and familicide. We will be seeing the numbers of these 2 things skyrocket to numbers the world has never seen before when AI takes away as many jobs as possible. There will come a time when humans and AI is so well integrated that we can't imagine living without it. However, the bridging time between now and then is going to be extremely dark.

Why though? Does nobody think of those people who only now are learning to make art because of the generators? Who never would have been able to do so for lack of money, free time, motor skills, psychological blocks or any number of other things that make it impossible or out of reach for them otherwise? Also I don’t think using a named artists’ styles is really unethical unless one lies about it, in fact most artists don’t actually believe it either, in any other context. And people talk of there being more artists and more art like it’s somehow a bad thing. But the problems they bring up actually have less to do with the technology than the economic system. And that means that blaming the technology is a mistake. Indeed there is something else at stake here and those opposed to free ai art are on the wrong side of it. There are media companies who would if they could, destroy fair use, put the entire internet under drm, create a monopoly/oligopoly over both ai art and professional art, and force us to pay for all of it. And they have been working towards that end for years. They created and funded propaganda designed to vilify open source ai, and that was apparently all it took to build a movement so loud it even brought in people who normally oppose copyright. And this is why we should defend free ai art, and all honest uses thereof, on principle( the one dishonest use is what’s known as forgery, which would be illegal even without copyright. Invisible watermarks are an adequate way to prevent that.). Because if we don’t, those corporations get their way.

Big question here is whether we should even allow a capitalistic system to exist in the first place alongside AI production. I'd say not, since going down this path is means getting algorithms to monetize everything, and this looks directly in the direction of dystopia. This says to AI that a future where everything including air is good to be monetized, and if you fail at this system, you need not live.

I mean.. if when prompted “asian” it produced nude and possibly porn photos of asian persons, can you imagine how far can they go in descriptive prompts as to produce insane inappropriate renditions to sell?! And worst yet, people have been feeding the ai photos of any subject- in this case let’s imagine a child/teen, or any adult, and ask the ai to render it as an art that is so and so- let’s imagine it’s crazy inappropriate too. So anyone can now fall victim of this kind of atrocious abuse!

I wonder how much of the AI hype will become real any time soon, I mean I'm sure it will change the world, at least at the moment is changing it for worst in the case of creatives, but I'm sure there will be many positive things. But I just remember how in history, humans really tend to overestimate the possibilities of new technology, a lot of people thinking we would live in a sci fi futuristic utopia with flying cars by the 2000's and yet not even self driving cars work properly nowadays.

I agree with the overestimation of what technology can do; however, my concern is the exponential rate of development along with that overestimation of the positive outcome. Especially, in light of the things we hear about and that there are probably a thousand things we are not hearing about. In other words, it seems like society just keeps pushing forward thinking about how much easier and convenient technology is making things without any consideration of the real cost or the downside. The example of plastics comes to mind. Thanks for your comment.

As an Artist the problem with AI generated images is it devalues actual Art and legitimate artists...we are in a timeline where we show people our genuine art but now they think, meh, an AI probably did this. and eventually a future where we no longer admire artists and their works because people now think, meh, I could do this with an AI. The ultimate consequence of AI is the displacement of all human skill. a Dehumanization of us Humans... where eventually, no one will care about any work a person does may it be art music movies or other creative or physical work. because everything can be done by generating a prompt or by pressing a button. Right Now We Artists just happen to be the first one's on the chopping block But eventually it will come for all Industries. and we should really think hard about it. How do you think It would feel? Losing your voice, your audience, your platform, your vocation, and eventually your whole entire identity - to an AI algorithm? Without proper Regulations on how AI should be ethically used this is the future where we are a heading.... An AI used only to serve the Corporations the Rich and elite while Completely Devaluing, Dehumanizing and displacing the rest of Humanity that is below them.

Several good points. First, maybe for art, literature, music, etc. it becomes important to know the sourcing, sort of like how organic or local grown food sometimes tells you the farm and you can go get the info on it. Secondly, I know exactly what it feels like to think that your job will be replaced. A lot of chatter around academia about what happens to the teaching profession in light of these new technologies. Finally, I agree, legal and regulatory control needs to happen for all of the reasons you mention. Thanks for your comment.

Is there even a point anymore? As a gen z person, I’ve recently woken up to the fact that my worst nightmare is closer to life, taking over as a I watch, and I can’t do anything about it. I don’t know what to do, I want to fight it but it feels insurmountable, that the only escape is a trip off a balcony before it gets worse. I mourn for the future all ready. And worse, our end will be slow and painful instead of going out with a bang. It seems humanity will only wisen up when it is far too late. But then I wonder, is it truly as insurmountable as it seems? What would fighting back look like? How would we get enough people to recognize that the corporations in charge of the ai are only as powerful as we make them? I don’t know. But every it’s a constant struggle not to listen to the void and give in when I can only see life rotting around me. But alas, I am waxing poet and a youngster like me should be scrolling Instagram right now instead of having a justified existential crisis.

You're not alone. I'm gen z too, and I know the world seems unchangeable, the fight insurmountable, I have often let that darkness into my own heart. But I also know that despondency is a weapon against us, and that to win against it is to see value in the struggle itself. Then the burden seems less and we have greater capacity to hope, to imagine the world we truly want to see, that world which I know lives within your heart. To fight back is to win the struggle within ourselves, inspire hope and dreaming in others too, and to share love through practical actions small and great alike. Making our life and that of those around us worth living is worthy in and of itself, and I believe that if we join together around visions of communities untethered from the direction of this current society, we can surely build them. There is plenty of action that can be taken, a life to be lived focused on creating systemic change that starts from the grassroots. You might like Andrewism's videos here on RUclips. To be sure, it is not just your generation having an existential crisis these days. Many people of all sorts feel the pressure of this nihilistic age. The big difference, as far as I can tell, is that Gen Z and Millennials were born into it, whereas it was a slow, methodical, barely recognizable process for my generation and my parent's generation. I think that is why it is easy for the generations to tsk, tsk each other. What we need to do is realize that we are all in the same predicament and need to work together. What does that look like? I'm not sure, but that is where we come together and figure it out. One thing I do believe is that we are not helpless. We still have free will and control over our actions. Thus, that is why I wanted to put this video response out here. I think there are billions of people who feel just like us but don't know what to do and just go back to our distractions. One thing I wonder about is what would happen if billions of people just switched off for a day or two? That might get some attention and be good for us. I appreciate the positive encouragement that @chalichaligha3234 and @kattman4605 have given you, good words, indeed. We all need to be more encouraging and find ways to push for what we want out of this world and this technology. As opposed to just going along with whatever it is they have planned. I think it was Jesus that said, "be in this world but not of this world" and I take that to mean that a person has to take responsibility and create the life that you want even if it doesn't fit with what everybody else is doing. Thanks for your comment and I encourage you to start and/or continue your spiritual journey in earnest. I have found no greater peace in my life than connecting with the divine.
