Z675 Battery for Zenith 5G500 Radio
This video provides information on assembling a reproduction Z-675 battery for the Zenith 5G500 portable tube radio. The Z-675 battery is an AB battery, providing an A voltage of 6 volts for the tube filaments and a B voltage of 75 volts for the tube plates.

1975 Tyco Alco Locomotive Test
Просмотров 59Год назад
This circa 1975 Tyco Alco Century HO locomotive was last run around 1978. I recently removed it from storage, and tested it on a short test track. It didn't run at all at first, but after wheel cleaning and lubrication, it did run, but needs more TLC. Although it lacks the superb details of todays Proto and Genesis models, it was a decent model by 1970 standards.

@@ClintonvilleModelRailroad a very interesting piece of vintage technology, great for its time.
Beautiful radio.
@@ON5ALE-Alessio Thank you
You listening to the rap station for more than 5 seconds made me laugh. Thanks for the great info
@@Will_14_years_ago Glad you enjoyed it!
Sorry but what about the fold down manual/qsl list?
What do you want to know?
I found your website but don't see a way to purchase I would like to buy a battery pack am I not seeing something or the right area on your website, please help thank you very much.
You have to go to my website to purchase a battery kit. The URL is on my channel header or go to edsantiqueradios.com. There are several battery options, so read and follow the instructions. You can email me from the website if you have questions.
@@morrised2006 Thank you, I'll try that
Hey Ed! I'm glad I found this video! Because I've got a to 600 that I bought that has a battery in it built by YOU! And I've been trying to get a battery for my 8g005ytz1 along with the separate small round battery that sets in that little cubby behind the antenna. I didn't know if you still made them or not but I know that the battery I do have has your sticker on the back side of it! btw....hey from a fellow Virginian! (Gloucester, VA) I have literally fell in love with the Trans-Oceanics! Almost to addiction status! Lol! It was the whole reason I discovered the world of Shortwave! I started with a Y600 that I purchased from an antique store, and I've been a listener ever since! 🤗 Anyway sorry for the long rambling paragraph...... Just glad to see you're still out there!
That’s cool you bought a radio with one of my batteries in it. If you go to my website you can find the batteries you need for your 8G009 radio.
This pack can be used for all zenith transoceanic ?
@@_ferra9288 Yes, the Z-985 battery is used in every model tube Trans-Oceanic radio. The 600 series radios also use an additional battery, a Z-1, for the dial light circuit, and the 8G009 radios also require the Z-1 battery as it has mores tubes than the 500 and 600 radios. The first model, the 7G601 or Bomber model, also requires two D cells in addition to the Z-985 because it too has an extra tube.
Hi, what did you use renew the outside of this radio? Thanks.
The old covering was removed and replaced with Tolex. It is the material used to cover guitar amps. You can find it online.
Is someone making those battery packs? I have the first transoceanic Bomber to restore.
Yes, I make them. Go to my website and you can order one.
Ok my friend I went to see and it was already at the bottom of the speaker thank you very much friend JC SP/SP Br
Friend, what is the use of this switch in FM-AFC / FM, what is its effect? And what is the correct position for these yellow and black speaker cables, because they are polarized? Thank you very much.
FM/AFC switches between FM and FM with Automatic Frequency Control (AFC), which is supposed to prevent the radio from drifting off frequency. If you freeze frame the video, you should be able to see how the speaker leads are connected. The yellow lead connects to the lower terminal.
Fabulous! Great cosmetic condition too.
Thank you!
I went with the 10 9v batteries and there usb rechargable same with the D batteries
Great, hope it works well for you.
Es maravilloso que las conserven funcionales, genial!!!!

Thank you.
Is the colander still available?
Sorry, it's sold out.
What song was used before you switched to aux
I don’t recognize the song. It was playing on an FM station before I switched to AUX. The clarinet solo on the iPod is by Russ Reinberg.
@@morrised2006 I finally realized what it was it was I am by mark Schultz klove plays that alot
Bought this exact Maggie console a couple weeks ago. 2-1/2 hour drive (one way) to get it. $40. Nice cabinet. Waiting to pick it up from my repair guy's home. Recapped and resistors checked. I'll need to fiddle with the turntable though.
Congratulations on your find. Does it have the original Webster-Chicago record changer?
I just bought one of these at Goodwill. Mine looks great, but is missing the 8track door. The 8track works, but like yours it’s not great sounding. The radio itself is phenomenal sounding. I’m running a WIIM streamer to the Aux input for Bluetooth capability and using Klipsch RP 600m speakers. Wonderful radio! And stunning visually IMO.
I really like the 1970s audio equipment designs, and the quality was very good.
I'm convinced I spotted one of these radios in the 1949 movie "White Heat" (starring James Cagney.) Can you confirm which one? It was around 01:10:45 into the movie.
I don’t recall as I haven’t seen that movie in years, but it is not unusual to spot a Zenith Trans-Oceanic radio in an old movie. They often appeared as props, both tube models and solid state models.
@@morrised2006 I understand. I just sent you some screenshots from the movie via email. Let me know if that helps.
Very nice work.
Hey i just bought one of these and i cant figure out how to install the speaker wires so that i get sound, the headphone jack works but im not understanding how to install the wires with the screws
If your speakers have RCA phono plugs, cut them off. Strip the ends of the speakers wires about an inch, twist and bend into hooks, slip under the screw heads, and tighten. You must get the polarity correct or the speakers will be out of phase and sound bad. You have two sets of connections, A or B. Use one or the other, and make sure the speaker selector switch is set correctly.
I understand the later 40's used a selenium rectifier replacing the octal 117Z3.
Thanks for your comments about Loktals and selenium rectifiers.
Loctal base tubes were unique, no danger of them popping out of the socket. Loctals are still available and reasonably priced.
Yeah thankfully they are! 😅 Because the smaller ones Ive bought for my 600 series over the last year are pretty expensive! Especially the 50A1 And the 1L6. And if they're NOS..... Almost getting into the three-digit range!! 🤦♀️ When I got my 8g005, I was thinking the tubes were going to be really expensive, but to my surprise..... Very cheap!!! 🤗
Do you still do work,? I have This 1957 Zenith Cobramatic Model S-14084 record changer is actually a Voice of Music Model 1210A- It needs a plinth and I love this one!!! Also an external power cord wired to it as it has the plug for the HF-11F it came out of. It is the black color that is wired for mono. Please let me know thank you I LOVE THIS!!!
Sorry, I don’t work on them anymore.
what a cool old radio, thanks for what you do and for sharing it with us all.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
I had 3 different modles when I was a kid, left for USMC @ 18y and mom took them to the thrift shop. I now have a G500 [ser. #104111, your's is 104073] (not working, but looks great) and a H500 (works great, missing front cover). Am I to understand that you sell the battery box setup for these? KG6YVD
I do make battery kits for the Trans-Oceanic radios. Visit edsantiqueradios.com. If you watch listings for Zenith Trans-Oceanic radios on EBay, you may find a complete cabinet for sale. A cabinet from any H500 or 600 series TO will work.
I restored a G500 about 20 years ago. I regret selling it.
Time to pick up another one!😁
In the late 40s and early 50s, the worst source of radio noise at home was a vacuum cleaner. I had an RCA battery radio like that with a VS050 battery, 7.5-6v A and 75v B.
Your old radio would definitely not like a vacuum cleaner near by. Thanks for the memories!
I'd like to see a video where you show replacing the suction cups and links to the cups please.
I don’t have a video for that. The OEM suction cups attach to the hinges with a nut and bolt. Simple to remove. New suction cups for grabbers install the same way. Search online for them.
Beautiful battery Ed.
Thanks!
I'd say it sounds as good as it ever did.
Yes, the electronics hold up well. It’s the mechanical parts that suffer from long periods of storage. But after a few minutes of use, it seems to be working ok.
What gauge did you use for the tonearm wire?
I used 30 awg wire.
@@morrised2006 thanks

Beautiful radio
Thanks for looking!
Wow, this radio is a great performer! I just bought a 790 off eBay but it's a different version... I think it may be a couple years newer than your. I look forward to playing with it.
Great! Have fun with it.
I have this identical radio on my kitchen counter. It was originally my grandma's, but she passed in '86, and I've had it since. Its in the same condition, just needs recapping to get rid of 60hz hum. Never serviced, just a solid little radio! Great video!
Thanks for your comment. These iconic radios are quite collectible.
i just restuffed the plug in electrolytic today. pretty easy. use a pipe cutter and cut right before it flares out. you can get the tar out just by picking at it. you can get the rest of the foil out by working a knife all around the inside and get a nice big coarse bolt and screw it in, then just pull out the guts. take a small drill bit and drill down the no. one, 3 and 5 pins. that will allow for the leads to go in and using a good crimper and small jaw, crimp gently. tape it all up, not too much or it wont fit. use the adhesive of your choice to bod it back. worked great!
Thanks for the tip on restuffing the multican.
What type of tube or tubes does it use?
The amplifier uses three tubes: a 1H5 a 1A5, and a 1G6. The schematic can be found on my website.
Just bought a K model aluminium and Black. Really good condition though It’s missing the handle and tubes and the battery. Where can I get a handle. Any ideas. ?
1r5. Can be subbed for 1l6 weak on sw
You can use a 1r5 for 1l6 in a pinch there about 5$ or less poor on sw .
I know very little about about the genuine Crosley stuff from the tube era. I only know of the bad rep of the horrible China garbage with the Crosley name slapped on the shit.
I have the same putty greenish radio made in The Neo Soviet Republic of Canada, but mine has a red shield on the front where you have a blue one. I wonder what it means?
Not sure, but I've read that the badge color was keyed to the radio color, so the emblem color varied depending on the color of the cabinet. Radio cabinets and emblems also get swapped out or repainted, so hard to tell what's original these days.
I just gone one of these babies at a thrift store. The putty-green color. All the knobs are present and are in nice shape. It's had it's tubes changed in it's time, a wire broke off from the phono input/radio switch so it was silent untill I soldered that back on. The thick power cable is original but the Yahoo's who owned it unplugged it over and over by jerking it out of the socket by the cord, so the connection is crappy because the wires are broken inside, so that will be needing some love. Little things. It's crazy how much money people ask for on eBay. But hook a 50s chrome coffee perculator up to it and it will wake you up with music and the fresh smell of coffee.
The Crosley's have always been pricey because of the unique, iconic 50's styling inspired by the automobile styling of the era.
Well I suppose it falls into that collectable zone. What I care about is it's got an aa5 radio circuit, a tested and perfected frugal design and a decent size speaker. Hell I may even hook my fifties chrome perkulator up and see what's it's like to wake up to music and coffee.
Can sub 1r5. For expensive 1l6 on later models not as good on ham but i have a real ham rcvr
Ps 1r5 can be suppstituted for expensive 1l6 in later models
True, but usually an 1R5 is only used while troubleshooting or testing to avoid damaging the rarer and more expensive 1L6. Reception on the upper SW bands is degraded if an 1R5 is substituted for the 1L6, not that there's much to hear on those bands, anyway these days. I replaced most of my 1L6 tubes with solid state versions and put the originals away.
I just picked one of these up in rough shape. Does someone sell the replacement dial lense?
