Colorful Drought Tolerant Garden
I'm really psyched to take you through one my Songbird Garden Design's drought tolerant gardens that was installed almost 3 years ago. Walk with me as I talk about the plants and hardscape that was selected. This is a Southern California inland garden where the temperature can reach over 100 degrees weeks at a time as well as frost in winter. Please leave Questions in the Comment section. Thanks for watching!

    How does one create the trail? 😊👍🏾

    • @SongbirdGardenDesign
      @SongbirdGardenDesign 10 месяцев назад

      Hi. Sorry for the delayed response. The trail is made from Decomposed Granite also just called DG. Depending on how much traffic you predict, there are various methods of installation. You will need border material along the perimeters to hold it in place. We used Benderboard which comes in long 20 ft pieces at your favorite hardware store. It should be staked down every 3-5ft depending on the terrain. I don’t recommend DG if the path is sloped. The DG may “run” with heavy rains. Flat services are best.

    Another criteria I think is important to know is the growth of the plant before you put it in the ground. It’s important to know that it’s maximum height and maximum width will fit in the area that you’re planting the plant

    • @SongbirdGardenDesign

      Hi! The Magnolia I was showing is a dwarf species called ‘Little Gem’. You don’t have to be concerned about the roots doing damage. But you’re right, the larger species are not good as street trees if planted to close to sidewalks. Thank you for your input!

    Have many of these plants- but the gophers have been eating the Kangaroo Paws and Phormium off at the ground. Any suggestions on keeping these plants alive?

    • @SongbirdGardenDesign
      @SongbirdGardenDesign 3 года назад

      Hi Kay. Pest control isn’t really my specialty but are you sure it’s Gophers? Gophers usually eat the roots of the plants from under the ground. Kangaroo Paws and Phormium have something in common…They will NOT tolerate poor drainage. Do not let them sit in soggy or soil that is too moist. They should be planted with their root balls mostly showing above ground level and don’t smother them with mulch. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment.

    Museum tree for my front yard, its a 3 way multi trunk, NOT twisted; such a perfect tree. So I have a Australian Willow for my back left corner in back, this will block an ugly garage. Now I have two trees left a Japanese Blueberry and a Straw berry, so the Straw berry is clean......I'm thinking thats better close to the deck, while the Blue berry would be better doing screening duty in the back of the yard? I think the Straw berry is more "tree like" focal point than the Blue Berry tree but what you all think?

    • @SongbirdGardenDesign
      @SongbirdGardenDesign 3 года назад

      Hi. I also have multi trunk Palo Verde in my front yard. Wonderful tree! Australian Willows are lovely evergreens. Are the Strawbery Tree (Arbutus Marina?) and Japanese Blueberry(Elaepcarpus decipiens) standard trunks? Blueberry more of a shrub shape but both can have beautiful canopies! Both grow slow so if you’re looking to create a shaded area best to start with a 24” box or larger. Sounds like you made great choices! Good luck.

      Hi Myeah - thanks so much for subscribing. I went to Pierce College in the Los Angeles area. I studied horticulture and Landscape Design. Many of the professors have changed since I was there but I think it is a wonderful school. It was originally founded as an agricultural college but unfortunately that area of study seems to be fading. There were plans on the table to build a whole new horticulture school including a Greenhouse but I don't know when or if that will happen at this point. Good luck with your designing career. • @SongbirdGardenDesign
      @SongbirdGardenDesign 3 года назад

      Hi Karlah - They are bearded Iris. Comes in many varieties and colors. You plant the bulbs in Fall for Spring blooms. If you are in SoCal I keep them in filtered light or on the East side of property for morning sun. The bulbs multiply quickly within a couple years so don't start with too many. My neighbor actually gave me bulbs a few years ago and I now have plenty to share. :-)

    Is it a good time to plant citrus now in SoCal? Zone 11.

    • @SongbirdGardenDesign
      @SongbirdGardenDesign 4 года назад

      Hi - Thanks for Subscribing. Wow. You are way up North. From what I researched (USDA Zone 11) your seasons are well defined with hot summers and cold winters. Citrus will freeze with frost if not protected. (Depending on your microclimate.) If you are thinking of giving citrus a try I would wait until Oct. to plant until the temperatures cool down and before the cold hits. However, depending on the type of citrus you choose you may not want to plant if the tree is still fruiting. In which case wait until April for best results. Refer to my How to Plant video. Remember not to plant too low. All the best.
