Making a wooden box for someone with vision loss with etching and textured woodwork
Before Christmas 2024 I was asked to make a wooden box for someone with advanced wet macular degeneration - meaning they have severely obscured vision. The brief was to make something in wood preferably with traditional joinery and with the focus on what can be seen with the hands rather than the eye - in other words where texture is more important than the usual woodworking visuals of grain, timber and so forth
This is the story of that box and the journey it took me on from the basics to new skills and an appreciation of someone else's experience of things I take for granted.

I tried some new techniques to decorate a guitar neck stand | #woodworking #etching #guitar
Просмотров 48428 дней назад
I took the opportunity to try out some new techniques - etching with a rotary tool and charring - to decorate the replacement guitar neck support I made from an offcut of garden sleeper. The etching will be useful for another project. The neck support is useful for changing strings. Once I'd changed the strings I learnt a new song. Song cover: Alter Bridge - Blackbird #woodwork #guitargear #fur...
How I restored two cheap rusty hand saws from a vintage market | woodworking tools #woodwork #tools
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Месяц назад
I found two rusty gentleman's saws in a vintage market for £5 each. They weren't in the worst condition but were definitely in need of some TLC. They couldn't cut through anything so here is the process I used to clean them up and sharpen the teeth to get them to dovetail standard. #woodworking #toolrestoration #handtools #smallworkshop This video is intended for entertainment purposes only and...
A new kind of leg! Making an elegant "cornered fan Leg" side table | woodworking
Просмотров 8403 месяца назад
Developing leg design from solid to fan to what I'm calling cornered fan. I have seen the design concept before in other woodworking videos but not found one where the slats twist to form a right angle. Can thin slats be both structural and decorative? And does this reinvent the leg in furniture deisgn? I'd had a piece of beech hanging around for a while and after some weeks of prototyping, ske...
Making boxes with handmade hinges and clasp | Woodworking workshop #woodwork #boxes #hardware

In this video I make two "companion" boxes - each an opposite of the other in contrasting wood. I realise early on that I only have cheap and nasty hardware so as part of the project set myself the task of designing, prototyping and making my own hinges and clasp. I like to use a mix of power and hand tools and this film shows the stages I go through to get from timber to boxes - I hope you fin...
Woodworking - Dovetail marking and cutting jig with offcuts #woodworking #offcuts #dovetails
Просмотров 366 месяцев назад
Making a jig for marking and cutting dovetails using offcuts. Sometimes I'm not very accurate at cutting this type of joinery and my saw can wander; quite often leaving me with black lines around the joint where I've had to fill in gaps. So I looked at some of the commercially available cutting guides and decided to save a few £££ by making it myself using some rosewood and maple offcuts and gl...

they look like Britain's answer to the Chinese or is it Japanese saw ? what they use in woodturning , ive just recently got into wood turning and they use these kind of saws for cutting off ,so will keep my eyes peeled for one of these , thanks for the idea and showing us what you did . Greetings from Wales .ive liked and subd you boost you up a bit . Ant !

Thanks Ant, and greetings to you. Sub etc much appreciated. I agree the saws are like the Japanese dozuki saws...not sure why they call them gentleman's saws here though 😂. If you're close to any indoor vntage markets or even antique fairs, they can be a gold mine for cheap tools - half my hand tools are "vintage" in some way. Cheers

Nice work. I've made wood hinges on cupboads and make all my own handles because i dont like buying the same rubbish that every body else does. I have stacks of short scrap wood and the tools to make...only one in the world......door furniture. I don't like spending money either. Have you tried schellac finish. Wipe it on sparingly with a damp only pad and after 10 or so wipes it give a soft shine. Look up french polishing basics that will explain it better. Cheers Geoff from Tasmania

Thanks. Yes, it seems strange that we (as makers) have the skills to make all sorts of fancy stuff but put rubbish, mass-produced hardware on it. I think we may have started a revolution...

I don't like sound of my own voice so I don't talk on vid either. Too much talk, like the average merican who loves his voice and doesn't know when to shut up, is a pain I don't need

It's lovely! The design changes, aka happy accidents, just prove that it's a one of a kind piece. You say "winging it," I say "design-build." [Edit] I like the ash drawer bottoms.

Thank you so much. I will now think of any winging I do as ad hoc design-build features.
