It’s called Nystagmus, google it 🤷🏼♂️
I've been demoing both Kick 3 and Kick Ninja. Kick Ninja has way more customisation and control over the waveform. The UI is nicer to use and the graphic is larger in Kick Ninja. The AI import is better in Kick Ninja because you can actually select the cutoff frequency to resynthsize the sine portion. I don't think you can do that in Kick 3 if I'm not mistaken.
That’s an interesting observation, I’m assuming you have the beta version of Kick 3? Some people here are really looking forward for Kick 3
@impulsecontrol you can install the demo of kick 3 it's on the main website
Excellent tutorial you are very clear!!. For the EQ I will use *Izotope EQ* which is free and has linear phase EQ and *Metric AB* to compare. Also what do you think about sidechaining bass with Hi pass filter moved by the the kick? We can remove the bass from the bass but not the hi freq.
If there are phase issues between the kick and the first bass note I’ll use SonicScoop (max4live device) or Fuser (Mastering The Mix). Both are a frequently dependent side chain devices. But yeah your trick with the filter would do as well
Thanks ☺️ feel free to share this video! For side chain i use SonicScoop (cheap max4live device) or Fuser, both are frequency dependent side chain devices! But your trick would do too.
Kick3 and Psylab 1.3 (no public release yet) also offer kick re-synthesis, good times.
Good times indeed!
is it possible that when i use ableton 10, that i cant put youre layering Rack in my project ? THANK U SO MUCH for all ure videos <3
Hmm I made it with Ableton 11 so you might need the latest version 😬
Personal opinion, use a kick sample. Waste less time, get on with track production.
That’s what I generally do
Thanks for the great explanation! This is such a smart way to recombine the bottom part and top parts of kicks you love and turn them into the perfect bassdrum. 🔥🔥🔥
With pleasure! Keep innovating!
I am waiting for KICK 3 to release since I have been using KICK 2 for a very long time.
Can you drop any sample into kick 2 and re synthesise it as you want?
@impulsecontrol no kick 2 is just a kick drum Synthesizer. The vst is like 8 years old. But in Kick 3 you are able to load in samples and let the AI generate a synthesized version of it so you can tweak it like you want.
Thanks - This looks cool! I’ll give it a try… Similar concept to Backbone which is also very good!
Kick2 by Sonic Academy has been out for ages, can do all of this and more. So to say that this feature is unique is inaccurate.
Kick 2 can resynthesize kick samples..? He didn't specifically say it in the video, but that's what's happening here. You can import kick samples and the plugin resynthesizes it, giving you full control over synthesizing the sampled kick. The difference between that and editing the sample is immense. That's the one thing this has over Kick 2, unless I missed something with Kick 2 lol Highly recommend Visco as well. The demo is free and very fun to mess with.
Does Kick 2 has the same control over imported samples?
Ans kick 3 ?
vielen dank <3 mega video, mega typ !!

No fade out on the kick sample gets my OCD rocking
That seems like a “you” problem 🤷🏼♂️🤨
@@impulsecontrol Yep, but coming from hearing that nasty release from "your" kick
@@aspekt7631Ok fair, just listened to it again on my headphones, there’s a little click there
This bass is lacking in its upper range frequencies, probably between 200-400hz, the result is if you watch this video on small speakers or small headphones, the bass is almost not there at all and you hear only kick. This is a common problem and this is why it is important to listen to it as well on small headphones or speakers. Small boost in the 200-400hz area (you have to find the right spot for the given base) fixes the problem and base sounds good on all speakers. This is not that much of a problem with the the bass itself, it's just that small speakers lack the low frequencies and if given bass does not have good presence in its upper range it just goes away. The solution is to compesante by boosting the upper frequencies so it works on all speakers. When done right this actually creates psychoacoustic effect where the brains fill up then the lower end blanks and it seems like you hear the full bass.
Just had a listen to it on my iPhone, it sounds good 👌🏼 Sure, at the final mix-down of the track I’ll compare it to a reference track and make adjustments, but that part I kept for my course 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah on my phone is better, more like the bass level is a bit too low, on my in ear headphones is very bad. But anyways this is taken care of traditionally in the mixing phase by the mixing engineer, it's bad if this is send as final mix for mastering because then there is not much the mastering engineer can do about it or they will ask for stems then not final mix in such cases.
Dash Glitch is the Psy bass tutorial master imho. He nailed clean bass to a science.
Well, do you really need your bass to be scientifically perfect? If your goal is to finish tracks, than keep things simple and make progress.
@@impulsecontrol I respectfully don't agree. If you want to learn Psybass you need to dedicate time to learn it and it's most effective to learn from the masters. I would argue you will finish more tracks faster since you can be confident there are no phase issues or other shenanigans with your bass.
I don't even make Psytrance, but man, CLEAN VIDEO!
Thanks ☺️
jeezus effing K-rist! that's musical masturbation. lol
"You can barely hear frequencies below 40Hz" Very misleading, though I assume he is trying to simplify things for beginners. First of all, people can hear bass from 20Hz and up so there's a whole octave between 20Hz and 40Hz It is true that most beginners will have a pair of cheap small monitors or something similar, lacking the capacity to reproduce sound below 40Hz or even higher. *However* Good headphones and subwoofers do exist, perfectly capable of reproducing sound even below 20Hz. And decent PA systems at clubs and outdoor events can do 30Hz easily. Cutting at 40 can ruin music with deep bass frequencies
This video is indeed for beginners and intermediate producers. And sure, you’re right to say that cutting below 40Hz can ruin deep bass music! But not in this case, the note G-1 is sitting at 49Hz, so there’s no need for the lower frequencies
you cant hear 20hz but you can feel it, he is not wrong
@@SPSquirtle 30 Hz is pretty easy to reproduce and very easy to hear. If you have been to a good EDM festival no doubt you have heard 30Hz. 20Hz is pretty hard to reproduce, but not impossible. A set of quality headphones or an excellent sub woofer will do the job. And while it is true that you will feel 20Hz, you can hear that frequency too. It just needs to LOUD as this is basically the edge of human hearing and your ears have very low sensitivity at this frequency.
I love how you act. Like you could litterally pass like the most clichee gay person... just amazing, love it
How do you know I’m not the most cliche gay person? 🤷🏼♂️

“Private” lessons are £100 an hour 👀
Hey, just want to say that what is happening to the waveform at @5:23 is not a problem at all. It changes the phase yes, but that is not necessarily bad as a synth bass is not a multi mic recording where the relevant phase between mics, needs to be preserved. Also, some synths have spiky saws and generally "imperfect" (if we consider the digital implementation to be "perfect") waveforms. Again, nothing wrong with that, its just a different sound. You your self is later adding Disperser and as you correctly mention, it is an all pass filter which does exactly that, rotates the phase of different frequencies in your signal to achieve that "wet" texture (you can achieve a very similar effect by stacking up Multiband Dynamics/OTTs and assigning a macro to their crossovers)...and then you also add the Waves Trans X Multi which also uses minimum phase crossovers and in the end you open the oscilloscope which shows the bassline with the more "spiky" shape due to all the processing, which sounds absolutely fine, which is the whole point I am trying to make.
That is a fair point. I would still use the liner phase EQ to make sure there are no phase shifts at the low end, but I should have set up the Disperser at a higher note so it doesn’t affect the low frequencies, and it would sound ever so slightly better. Regarding the TransX I disabled the bottom 2 bands so it doesn’t affect the low end, even though I only use it for the trim feature. Thanks for pointing this out 🙏🏻
@@impulsecontrol I haven't used Trans X Multi for a while, so I just opened it and even if you disable the bands, it does not disable the cross over points, it just disables the transient shaping processing. You have a minimum phase filter at each cross over frequency the moment you enable the plug in.
The tutorial is absolutely fine and you get to a desired sound with the processing you're doing. I just want to address the "change phase = bad" mentality. It isn't inherently bad and your tutorial is an example of what I am saying.

When I cut a bass I cut it at 30Htz, the kick gets cut at 40 Htz
You can get away with cutting 40hz even 45hz - depends on the key. I usually don’t make a cut on kicks though as they all sound pro to begin with. I’m curious about your reasoning for cutting the bass at 30hz and the kick at 40hz
bro i was listening to your tracks the other days and holy damn you are a god.. i got really impressed by the bassline in quantum jitter i think it had like this very good mid low layer i suppose? or maybe it was the bass itself but damn it sounds so big and it kinda seems like it's stereo.. just because it's so big.. how can we make such basslines where you get that feeling of depth and space in the bassline itself
Oh thanks 🙏🏻 such an honour! Feel free to connect with me on Instagram so we can chat freely @impulse_control_tunes
Add stereo width to the mids and highs. You could use any multiband or split tool for it. Also works if you have two parts, one for sub and then apply the stereo width of your choice to the rest. Projektor has done a whole bunch of video's on this.
