Airfix 1/48 Avro Anson Mk1 : Unboxing

In this video, I take a quick look at one of the 2024 offerings from Airfix, this wonderful Avro Anson Mk 1! It looks like a superb kit overall! Please note that the audio sometimes fluctuates slightly due to me selecting "Auto" on the audio recorder. I won't be doing that again! It is still watchable and the variation in volume is only slight.

      The airframe is completed. She is in for covering now - WOT 4 ARTF is being recovered in film and then Hooligan final scheme will be done. I haven't been able to commit to it and I am fully aware how ridiculously long it has taken me. The next Hooligan video will be the completion and the most interesting bits in a montage. The naked wood structure looks impressive, and in my opinion more aggressive than the WOT 4. A side by side will be done. From now on, any build videos will not be published UNTIL the subject has been completed. That way this won't happen again.

    My Gran said she saw one of these planes diving down onto Peckham gas works early in WW2. She lived in a house behind them where her husband worked, and she said that she saw the pilot's face when he pulled up after his dive. Very scary!!

    Very well done! The final motor "test" is done at the flying field: the motor should not get hot. A little warm is OK, but not hot. If the motor runs hot, you must reduce the diameter/pitch of the prop so that the motor turns at a higher RPM and draws less current. This is especially important if you don't know the wattage rating of the motor.

    I'm a modeller at heart too, since childhood and I'm 54 now and while I still fancy building a classic Tamiya RC I pulled the trigger on a Vantage 2.0 instead simply on value for money terms and haven't regretted it. You still have a 'building' aspect though cos you're still going to have to maintain it, there are loads of hop ups available if you want and of course we all bin it occasionally (regularly? lol 😂) so... repairs. It's a great car for the price and very very tweakable 🙂

    David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Thursday, 27 June, 2024). In all fairness, I have keen fondness for 1) the Supermarine Spitfire Mk I (the first in a grandly storied lineage), Mk V, Mk XI, and the five-bladed Mk. 22-24 fighter; 2) the de Havilland DH-98 Mosquito RAF Light Bomber; I read the RAF had managed to cram a two-tonne cookie into the bomb bay--4,000 lbs.! 3) the AVRO Lancaster Mk I and M III RAF Heavy Bomber (I am uncertain as to the specifics of the various marks; the latter refers to the aeroplane with the modified bomb bay doors of the Dam Busters (or the Dambusters; I wish that lot writing the combat aircraft monographs history and the books would make up their minds; 4) amongst the other airborne standouts of the RAF, the RN FAA, the RAF CC, etc. I especially have places in my heart for 1) the Boeing B-17 series USAAF Heavy Bomber, at once graceful and doggedly hardy, repeatedly crossed deeply into Nazi Germany to strike down Adolf Hitler’s depraved totalitarianism, 2a) the North American Aviation P-51D/K Mustang USAAF Fighter received considerable approbation as a sleek thoroughbred, which its pilots remade into a swift, highly manœuvrable warhorse; 2b) (tied) in striking contrast, the Chance Vought F4U series Corsair USN/USMC/FAA Fighter held the formidable stance of an ever-ready prize fighter, prowling enemy-held skies looking for a fight; even whilst stationary on a makeshift beachfront airfield to the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, its distinctive airfoil configuration-one of its nicknames was the “bent-wing bird”-spoke wordlessly of its lethality; an even more chilling moniker, this from an implacable foe, was “whistling death”! How more succinct can one express one’s dread? Additionally, I admire the Consolidated B-24 Liberator USAAF Heavy Bomber, and its Navy incarnation, the Consolidated PB4Y-1 Liberator U.S. Navy Maritime Convoy Patrol Bomber for their contribution. Much like its lithe, little brother, the Mustang, the Lockheed P-38 series USAAF Twin-Engine Fighter blended sleek aesthetics with swift formidability. The Republic P-47D/M Thunderbolt USAAF Fighter brought a double-threat of brawn and hard hitting to the dogfight. The Bell P-39 series USAAF Mid-Engine Attack Fighter had a genuinely unique design of all single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft; it long struck me as the most aesthetic U.S. warplane. Its open forward fuselage afforded ample room for a 37mm anti-tank cannon, affording the pilot the opportunity to kick like a mule! Also, as for model-building, can one build this Airfix 1:24th-scale kit of the de Havilland DH-98 Mosquito RAF Fighter-Bomber (I think a Mk IV, though I am uncertain) as a standard RAF Light Bomber? If not, does the kit maker offer another boxing of this mark?

    • @SimonWebbRCandModellingChannel
      @SimonWebbRCandModellingChannel Месяц назад

      I haven't filmed a Part 2, and that information is out there for people to research. A 400w electric motor is one which has the quoted power rating of "400w". My advice would be to choose one with has a slightly higher max power rating. (450w for example) That way you are always within the safe maximum. For prop choice, you need to connect a watt meter to see what is "going on" numerically with the chosen load you have put on your motor.

    Hi Simon, Im building the Hobby 2000 version of this kit atm and it is possible to build the nacelles perfectly around the engines. But only just and with hours and hours of test fitting. My suggestion to anyone trying is to assemble front and rear nacelles seperate. That way you can use the exhausts to line up front and back and the spinner to close up the esembly.

    Why do modelers weather an aircraft that finished its’ war in less than 11 months? Can you tell a one year old car from one off the assembly line? Built July 42, first bombing mission November 42, last bombing mission May 43, back in the States June 43. They replaced 8 engines, both main wings and tail at least once while based in England. At worse, it got dirty and the leading edges had paint chipped down to the base aluminum. Today, at the USAF museum in Dayton, Ohio it is kept in museum quality “mint” condition. The only scratch marks on it were scribed on it during its war bond tour. No chipping visible. Weathering this plane may be artistic license, but in no way reflects how it appeared during the war nor as it does now. Its’ paint should appear as it did coming off the assembly line now, with some chipping on the leading edges during the war era. I prefer realism over artistic license everytime.

      Warbirds had a tough life. A car is not a military vehicle so has light use. If that car was used at war then it would look knackered after 12 months. The aircraft you see in museums have been restored in most cases. Flack action knackered the paint, and mechanics crawling all over it with crap on their shoes etc....you get the picture. At the end of the day you are entitled to your opinion Ron. I would add, the aircraft leaving the factories were not mint either!!

    Good to see it finished. Is there any way you could use small magnets for the battery hatch? I did finally manage to get out with my brushless 1/16th MT truck for a planned 2 batteries session. Unfortunately I had to quit about 5 minutes after the 2nd battery install as the pain in my left shoulder was becoming so bad it was making me feel nauseous. I reckon I need a good 2-3 weeks of uninterrupted warm and sunny weather before I can spend extended time out with my RC cars. I've been to the park a few times just to sit and absorb the rays and it is helping a bit but the weather is being so changeable and inconsistent. Luckily I can focus on my indoor hobby but, even so, I still have to take regular rest breaks. It is mightily frustrating. Good to hear your eyes are good now. I just need 2 new hips, 2 new knees, 2 new cervical vertebrae (that one being impossible of course) and a new shoulder and I'll be sorted. 🤣

    Thanx, Simon, for this video sharing your build. After watching, I thought I'd share a few thoughts. Rear gunner had a lap belt, similar to pilots lap portion of seatbelt. Gunner didn't need a cushion--unless he was VERY short--because his seat parachute was his cushion. Ju-87A's & B's had RLM 02 interiors, including instrument panels and rear gunner's seat (welded tube steel). RLM 66 began to replace RLM 02 for cockpits (not engine or u/c bays) in Spring '41, so that only the very last of the "R" production would receive RLM 66, and of course all subsequent D & G variants. Even the Versuch prototypes of the D model can be seen in existing photos to have 02 interiors & instrument panels, because V20-V25 were converted from B-1 variants. RLM 02 is a cousin in tone to RAF cockpit grey-green, but with bit more tan, lending it a warmer tone. I'm sure, Simon, that your familiar with the color since you've probably bought RLM 02 model paint. This color not surprisingly changed slightly in hue/tone over the course of the war, sometimes a little warmer (tan-green), and sometimes cooler (grey-green), depending on vendor, pigments and "field" mixing. Your Ju-87 interior would seem to more closely approximate RAF interior apple green, and thus appears, at least under the lights of your video, to be too green. Good catch on the grey radio equipment. Small electrical boxes, attached to cockpit sidewalls and floors, were usually painted the cockpit color on the assembly line, but the larger, radio transmitters & receivers, usually installed after cockpit painting, most often stayed in manufacturer's supplied color, designated grey, but could also be Wehrmacht grey or black. This eguipment often came with cautionary logos or info plackards, possibly also accounting for them not being over-painted. Although your part 2 doesn't cover bombs, Luftwaffe bombs were often not black, but grey, 02 grey, Wehrmacht grey, or sky blue. This can be seen, sometimes by tone, on black & white film, and sometimes on contemporary color film--even different color bombs on the same plane. Note: gunner has a back strap (provided in the Airfix kit), spanning the cockpit walls, for those "vertical" dives; strap can be detached if gunner has to swivel 180° to operate radio.

    • @SimonWebbRCandModellingChannel
      @SimonWebbRCandModellingChannel 3 месяца назад

      Thanks Joseph. Yes others have established my colour is wrong for the cockpit. I googled it first and I got back images showing several shades of green - I can't locate the instructions to check what the manual said without re-watching my video again.

    Thanx for your review & side notes/pics! I'm one of the biggest fans of this Airfix kit, and I think it remains, nearly 50 years on, one of their very best efforts! Spot on dimensions & shapes. Great detail that betters most subsequent competitors, especially given the molding limitations of 1975. Even today, how many manufacturers give you complete raised & flush rivets, and both butted & lapped joints? The canopies are outstanding for thickness, clarity, CORRECT framing and rivetting (shame on you, Trumpeter; you had the correct canopy from Airfix in '75, and you paid no attention). The molded detail of the guns is nearly there with current state of art molding, and that's fortunate, because Master Models has yet to release a 1/24 mg 15. Do I wish slide molding had been available in '75 for the exhausts and guns, and a current state of the art approach to the instrument panel? Sure, but these are easiy done with a modicum of skill & patience. Airscale provides a great addition to the fine Airfix panel. Notice the detail they put into the ignition harness and rudder pedals. Whatever the preference for rubber tyres, the detail is amazing, and the rubber is stable--unlike many competitor's efforts. And, to top it off, the kit goes together beautifully with commendably minimum gaps, sink marks or other "issues". A joy to build, and an accomompishment that many manufacturers, 50 years on, have not achieved. I do wish, with their subsequent releases of this kit & and its much escalating price (haven't mold costs long been amortized?) that Airfix had improved packaging protection for the kit contents. But, the few & narrow sprue gates are actually a plus for the parts, even if that makes them fall off the sprues easily. Yep, all in all, the Airfix 1/24 Stuka remains still the best by far, and the one to beat. I've built five of 'em.

Hence the RML originally coded ER. Only 24 were made to start. I preferred the standard RM. RML 898 did a promotional tour of the USA 1962/63 visiting San Fransico, New Orleans, Tennessee, Texas.

      Hi Tony. Thanks for your comment. Yes I use the T8FG Tx and I absolutely love it. So much so, that I bought another spare Tx as I find it very user friendly. I have heard the touch sensitive dial can become less sensitive in time, but I can say my set is 12 years old and I haven't had a single problem with it at all. You can expand the model memory from 20 up to over 100 I believe, but as my flying fleet is currently at 16 models I am fine. It feels lovely in my hands and you can adjust things like the stick tensions if you wish. Overall score from me is 9.5 out of 10. The 0.5 mark down is the screen is a little small - but a larger screen would have resulted in a higher purchase price, so overall I am very pleased with it. Would I recommend it?....YES! .......It has been superseded now, but I really love this one.

    За такую цену, можно было положить маскирующие маски для кокпита.

    Omg you dont remember where the watt meter, it always goes between the battery and esc. A 45amps is to small and it would be better to be over 20% above 45a

    The Phantom is my favourite aircraft ever, I'll try and get one of these kits sooner rather than later, I have a 1/32 Tornado GR.1 to build and a 1/32 Harrier which I'm starting on Saturday but the Phantom is my ultimate build, I'd ideally like a Royal Navy scheme, Wwe'll see!

    Love your videos! I'm a new subscriber. Sorry about your set back. The good news is it's very treatable. My wife had both her lens replaced with the soft lens so she could see near and far without glasses. She's very happy with the results. 20/20 and clear as glass. Stay strong and carry on. I know you'll be successful. 😊 BTW did they have models 300 years ago? Lol😂 JK.

      Hahaha...very funny! Thanks for your words. Only 3 weeks before my right eye is done, and then another 4 weeks after that until my left eye is done. Then another 4 weeks for any distance glasses if needed. Looking forward to afterwards!🙏👍
