The Merchant of Venice - Digby Ricci - Lecture Two

Some mistakenly regard it as an anti-Semitic text, others see it as an interesting, flowered romantic comedy. Dear Typer Jones, Thanks for your interest and support. They are greatly appreciated. Young and old, teacher and student, we are all ‘sharpened’ and illuminated by the greatness of Shakespeare! I would suggest you tackle “ Macbeth” next - such a marvellous and gripping text. Then, I would embark on the challenge of “ Hamlet”. As far as the comedies are concerned, begin with that glorious study of love and the power of imagination, “ A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Of course, you must not miss out on that most poignant tragedy of thwarted young love, “ Romeo and Juliet”! Every joy and success with your studies! Regards, DIGBY RICCI.

Dear Nat KC, Thank you so much for your kind words! Such support certainly sustains a teacher. I am very glad that you are finding my lectures helpful. I am also delighted to have introduced you to Emily Dickinson. Real treasures await you, as you probe this immensely challenging, subtle, and profound poet. By the way, in her fine work, “ Break, Blow, Burn”, the provocative, brilliant critic, Camille Paglia, writes superbly about Dickinson. All the best with your studies of Shakespeare and other literary geniuses, and, please, keep in contact! With thanks and best wishes, DIGBY RICCI.
