Akebono’s Final Yūshō
Просмотров 303 тыс.2 года назад
Rest in peace Chadwick Haheo Rowan AKA Akebono Tarō 1969-2024 In sumo, it is almost unheard of that a rikishi bow out at the top of their game. For most, the years leading up to retirement are marked by a slow and arduous waning of strength and spirit, until no other option remains. In the case of sumo’s first foreign-born Yokozuna, however, the final year of his career marked a remarkable retu...
Like catfights
He's the first American to reach Yokozuna. He should be as well-known here as Mickey Mantle. RIP big man
Name of the technique from Akebono at 0:33??
Tsukidashi (frontal thrust out)
Rest in peace my man (1969 - 2024)
i've only been into Sumo since 2023, Man it's interesting to see how different it was back then. So many Yokozuna, ozeki all doing very well, which would suggest the rest of the field were getting slaughtered lol. Not the same at all atm, but of course things evolve. It appears sumo has become a lot more technical and skillfull instead of just sheer power and size. love it!
5:28 I will always love that respect shove from Akebono to Takanohana. Supreme enemies turned into respective rivals
Respect for Akebono and Sumo in 2024 from India.. Great sport...
There is nothing more tacky than posting "RIP" in a youtube comment thread.
It's really sad that Tananohana is ostracized at present, he is a living Legend, they will pray songs about him when he's dead, but make no effort for reconciliation at present. Sumo politics is so ugly that it's disgusting.
He was a mean! Like in a good way, ruthless, wants to win so badly every time. One of the greatest of all time, RIP Akebono Taro
Akebono was not good for Sumo. I give credit to him for being a gentleman, but it was not fun to watch him, unless being beaten...
@@joshuaclark1930 Thats just an untrue statement. Akebono brought many Western eyes onto this great sport. Speaking ill of the dead is very distasteful.
@@JonDaGuy blah blah blah. Tsuppari tsuppari tsuppari. Crowd groans. It sucked. Your tenderness and sympathy brings no joy to sumo. Joy in sumo comes from technique, Judo moves and ACTION! I deal with reality, not sentiment. It was a low time in sumo history, period.
@@joshuaclark1930 You are literally hating on a dead man because no one could beat him. That's like hating Steph Curry because no one can guard him on the perimeter. You sound like such a gross, bitter, jaded, and lonely person. I sincerely hope you go outside and try to be a better person.
@@JonDaGuy You're protesting wayyyy too much to an honest opinion. The "speaking ill of the dead" argument is always hilarious. You're an arbitrary hand wringer. Wipe away your little tears and confess to the truth. Akebono was roundly despised by real sumo fans, outside of the US. One trick pony, who simply used size over everything, with crazy long arms and literally nothing else. Again, snooze fest, anti-athletic, boring as shit. His defeats are the only enjoyable aspect of his career. The big lumbering heel gets thrown off balance and splashes down to the clay, and everybody celebrates the underdog winning against the monster. Everything I'm saying is entirely true. All of Japan cringed when he wrestled. His retirement was celebrated. And none of this is personal. I'm sure he behaved himself and whatever. He was just a giant among smaller rikishi. He only used size. It was mind numbingly dull.
crazy in the current era of sumo to think they had 3 active yokozuna back then, and we sometimes have 1.
First time I ever watch two Yokozuna against each other!!!
He just died aged 54. I wonder why
overwhelming power, either with a thrusting attack or on the belt.
曙が、もうこの世にいないなんてな…😢
legend
Heard a sumo podcaster describe Akebono as the greatest Oshi sumo practitioner of all time and watching this I agree. In spite of his size he was so lightning fast on getting inside with those thrusts and followed lateral charges with scary accuracy. What a legend. Rest in peace.
Compared to 2024, he is rather slow. Much less effort from both fighters.
@@Rudy97 What on earth are you talking about? Akebono was not the fastest but he was over 230kg, an absolute monster. If you want to compare, think about how Ichinojo moved. If you want to see the quickness, notice how fast Akebono changed plans to reach for the belt or mix up his thrusting attack, changing direction and adapting to the pulls and twists.
@@capitalistraven from this video I can clearly see how low the bar was back then. It can't compare to todays top division.
I only learnt of his death as he was featured in Legacy 2024 2nd week of April. I've been following Akebono Taro's career since his Sumo bouts and all the way into the Rizin ring.
To be fair, akebonos wins are not that interesting, technique wise
Dont have to be flashy when you’re such a powerhouse. Thats the beauty of Sumo. There are the technical wizards of grappling and then there are the brute strength behemoths. Always a great time!
Rest in peace
What a retarded sport
RIP Giant!
It's the stablemaster of Futagoyama heya, former Ozeki Miyabiyama!
Rip
(Did Akebono tried a Henka on Takanohana? It looks as if he sidestepped in the taichiai and tried to push Taka out.) But in all honesty and seriousness, Akebono was kind of my hero. He was Yokozuna when I got interested in sumo and I was totally impressed by this giant. Maybe he wasn't a really technical wrestler, but his raw power was very impressive. And in the end it doesn't matter what technique he used, the other wrestlers were powerless against him. Sa sad that he passed away at such a youg age and had so many medical issues in his last years. He couldn't remember his sumo career, and that's really tragic. It was a huge part of his life and as all top sports go, you sacrifice a lot to get at the top, and it's something you have to cherish for the rest of your life and then it's sad that you have no memory of it. A huge loss for the sumo family.
Legend to the sport. And the first Yokozuna that introduced me to sumo (besides E.Honda). He was like the final boss of sumo back then. The kingpin. Rest in peace big man.
RIP, AKEBONO TARO
RIP Akebono. One of the most successful sumo wrestlers.
