Blending Wool with a Hackle & Diz: Spin Your Own Unique Yarn!
Have you ever wondered how to create beautifully blended wool for spinning? In this video, I’ll walk you through the process of using a hackle and diz to craft your own custom fibre blends. You’ll also get a close-up look at the finished results.
Not familiar with a hackle or diz? A hackle is a comb-like tool used to blend and align fibres, while a diz is a small tool with holes that helps pull the fibre off the hackle into a continuous strip. Together, they’re perfect for creating smooth, well-blended fibres ready for spinning.

Beautiful Blend! The downfall of a hackle is the waste. I think thats why I prefer the drum carder and dizzing off from that. I love the hackle when working with a long wool fleece though.
you could put the leftovers through a drum carder for woolen spinning, or use hand carders.
Very pretty!
so beautiful!!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
I found plying off the center pull ball causes it to twist up too much in the end and causes a tangled mess that does not want to sit on the floor any longer. What I did was buy a counter and a bobbin winder that will hold many different sized bobbins. I take my main bobbin that is full and peel it off through the counter to another bobbin to see how much I have. I then take that and run it through again on another bobbin but take off only half. Take those bobbins then ply those with full control of both strands. Literally almost zero waste. It does not take too long to do and I get better results. I can also split into three if I want three ply and still have an exact amount left over. I found that my system is a bit better.
I really like the very specific instructions and views. I know very little about this and I feel like I could actually set up the different tools with your detailed instructions. Thanks so much!
Thanks for showing this. I think they both look great. Alternating 6" section of each would give a very interesting effect. Also, I would like to complement you on your video, audio, and background quality. Your script is also very good. Are you just starting or do you have other youtube channels. You don't often see this kind of quality in someone just starting.👍👍
Thanks! I do daily cross stitch videos too, so getting lots of practice :)
If I were spinning multicolor I would chain ply them to keep a more consistent clean look vs the chaotic look of the barber pole effect. I have not woven much but what I have has been mono colored two ply and a couple attempts at single ply on my tiny table two frame loom.
I much prefer chain plying too!
This was really neat, being able to see the difference. They both give different visual textures but lool really great. Thanks for sharing 💗🙏🏽🧶
I love inclusions. Thank u.
Great video, love the copper colour.
Thank you for sharing most informative
A great video thanks. I have used a Saori loom in a studio but rather expensive for me when I already have rigid heddle looms. However these looms are great for anyone with physical issues. I would be interested in seeing you warp with your own yarn, those rolls of warp are costly! By the way your hair looks fabulous 😊
Looking forward to warping it on my own! My other loom has a sectional warp beam on it so I’m going to be rusty with this I’m sure 🤣
You can do weaves with pick up but yes you generally have a ridged heddle loom with foot pedals
This is so helpful. Thank you!
Great vidio! I'm a little confused about how the warp is tied on to the warping stick of the breast beam. You also said you could cut your work off and still have warp if you move the bar up?
It isn’t tied on. There’s a thin piece of wood that fits into a groove on the rod that locks down the warp threads. When you are done a project, you can just move the rod up above your past work and lock it in again before cutting off. I will grab a video next time I do it!
Thank you so much for this video. I just receive my 1st 8 shaft table loom. Today I received The handweaver's pattern directory which has 600 weaves for 4 shaft looms. I was trying to figure out how to read the drafts, so now I know thanks to your video. I too wrote just the numbers on a pad of the shafts yesterday for 3 patterns I found online, makes it easier.
So glad it helped! Happy weaving :)
I tend to freeze those bags of spinach, crush them and use them for an iron boost in my ramen+
Great idea!
Wow. Thank you!
Love the colors and art yarn. 👍👍👍
Very good explanation with demonstration. 😊👍
THANK YOU. I've watched so many videos trying to figure this out, you made it so clear!!! I feel like I can finally move forward on my 4 shaft loom!
Thanks a lot for the clarification. Very simple and clear.👍🔥❤️
Thank you this is really good help ❤
Thank you for your explanation. Totally helped. I learned on a Rigid Heddle but now bought an 8 shaft table loom and couldn’t figure out that upper corner. Got it now!!
thank you. that made things really clear
THANK YOU
Just found this video. Relative newbie. This is the clearest and most simple explanation on using drafts that I have seen. After viewing I am much more confident in using my table loom (and multiple heddles on my rigid heddle loom. Thank you!!!
this helped me soo much! thanks
I have a loom with treadles and I still write out my pattern like this and tape the sequence across the castle! I don't wanna follow little blocks in the treadling pattern.
Good idea
Is the switches numbered or something? Great Technique tho
Neat.. I guess a mind can come up with amazing beautiful art pieces
I want to make my own yarn/material.. Just makes you feel complete when making something..
Thank you for sharing.. I definitely can't afford what you have but I don't plan on for along time to make something huge.. so I made my own.. Still have a lot of learning to do..
Just starting have been wanting to learn for a couple years now.. I crochet and get board with it. I moved to macrame but the rope is expensive though and want to make my own and now back to wanting to learn how to do everything weaving, for my own wall art or for family just because I love to make everything.. lol. Thanks for sharing
What weight of yarn and dent used?
I'm in love with this scarf! It's there a pattern for it?
Thanks Form your help
Nice work mam
What is the horizontal column?
I am working on a pattern in which I repeat twice each of the two parts of the total draft (I have an 8 shaft loom). My problem is that I get lost and I don't know "where I am" in the list of draws and I haven't been able to come up with a way to mark my next shoot. Any suggestions?
Good question! When I first started weaving I tracked it by writing it down on a piece of paper and adding tick marks by each one so I would know where I was. Now I number the rows and count in my head as I go. I never stop until I have completed the full set so I know when I pick back up - I am at the beginning each time.
@@joyfibreart Thanks! I do stop only when I finish the set. The tip about marking each one as I go, never occurred to me... How silly!
Hello Namaste Nice Ms Like to buy this Loom How we get the adrs me ashokan Yoga Therapist n architect me on 9447310987 thanks for ur presence
Thank you for explaining how to read the patterns. Its so much easier when you can see someone explaining rather than just reading about it.
Glad it was helpful!

Yo yo i'll make one.
very helpful, thank you!!
Lovely! Love the scarf and really enjoyed watching the foot treadling. Beautiful colour choices🙏💕
Thank you! 😊
