I hope you get better and get rid of the cold. My Story is similar. I am also born end of the 70s. The Dark Eye was also for me the starting point. I still have my boxes from the 80s/early 90s. it started with my neighbor and my brother ... Starting with The Dark Eye, then moving to ADD and Star Wars WEG D6. Your video caused some nostalgia. How similar our stories are! I’m a bit older, but when I was in the Army (late 80s - early 90s) I was deployed for a while in Germany (very near to a town called Venlo in the Netherlands). Of course our paths would have never crossed… Anyway, I enjoyed your tale and I hope you get well soon!

I'm trying to remember my history... I know it started with the Basic Red Box, something like 1983. I know that I had a couple of friends, I think in high school, and I believe we got some version of Advanced D&D and tried a bit of playing. I know that there was a lunch time D&D game at my high school. I think I played briefly but I was into other stuff back then. I did get into online MMOs though. The first, even before Ultima, was a game called Meridian 59. I think it was the first graphical MMO (2d). Played that a lot. I do remember playing ultima but not for long. I moved to Everquest and played for several years. Then Everquest 2, then WoW and I toyed with an occasional other MMO. I never got into group play TTRPG. Then about 7 or so years ago, I got back into 5e and played with a group online for 2 years. I got sick and left that. Now in the past year or so I've been circling around and around to play solo and I'm getting very close. I actually did play one session recently but I decided to change the rule set and setting but I'm again ready to start (Basic Fantasy RPG, Morgansfort, and Hexplorers Guide as main pieces)

I got my start in gaming around the same time you did but through more CRPGs, which I still often play, but I used the computer games to learn the rule systems, then got into table top and now solo RPGs from there. One of the games I played in my youth and replayed in modern ages, was The Realms of Arkania series, which was based on The Dark Eye Rule set. The second game Star Trial was my favorite, you might check youtube for a play through and see how well it holds up to the rule set. I think it would have been a hard system to learn on as the computer game had a lot of skills, that did not work well but were included in the base ruleset. And even with the game's help it was often a chore to sort out the skill and spell system...especially in the early 90's when I first was trying to learn it. I have no idea how you learned the table top version at that age. I got into AD&D mostly through the Eye of Beholder games, Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, and 2nd edition was my go to. 3rd Edition had some great CRPGs but I never liked the system as well overall, but it was alright to play in a group some. But then 5e came out, and really I think 5e gets so much wrong, it is great for new players to pick up but felt flat to me, and that is all anyone wanted to play, and it just made me miss 2nd edition even more. So I got into solo gaming because I thought I can use 2nd edition and make a solo game out of it. It went about as well as your solo d6 Star Wars game went. But then I found Basic Fantasy which feels a bit like 2nd edition but more simplified, so I started soloing with that mostly. I am no where near a professional, but I can have some good fun with solo. :)
