    Well I do enjoy watching your playing and singing evolve - I am on the path too. But watching your guitar collection and studio grow is almost as much fun. Love the new (?) Gretsch and Casino ! I think you should do videos of your guitars/amps and also how you do your studio work and parts and pieces to that. There are plenty of pros out there doing reviews and songs and what not, but getting the "amateur's" view on learning guitar is something unique you provide. Thanks !

      +Steve Austin Thanks Steve-- both guitars gifts from my wife. Glad to hear you're still enjoying watching my learning guitar diary. I might do a tour at some point but I'm really doing these to show the learning process. I guess gear is sort of part of that but it's more about learning to play. Anyway, glad you're on the path too and hopefully having fun as well. Put a video up sometime if you feel like it. Route 66 is one of my favorite early Rolling Stones songs. Originally a jazz piece by Bobby Troup the Rolling Stones rock it up a few notches at 175bpm. That speed made it pretty difficult for me to play, in fact. Even doing a shuffle at that speed was difficult and the solo was too tough-- something to work on (and I've worked on it for a while!). This is my first attempt at a walking bass line. I played the 1/4 notes rather than the 1/8th notes (again, tempo). It was pretty doable and worked out pretty nicely. I did completely cheat on the rhythm guitar-- I tried and I can hold it together for a verse or so before clamming it up. I finally gave up and used a little Logic Pro cut-and-paste to put it together so I'd have something to play over. I have to say I'm surprised how well that turned out-- it's pretty seamless. For the lead I skipped some of the tough bits and just put in some stuff that sounded right in a few places. I had to put the Chuck Barry bends in there after all. Anyway, it sounds decent to me and I'll probably still work on the solo -- I can play it at about half-speed but not at tempo. Well, I can't sing or move like Jagger!

      John Steelman Yeah, there are all kinds of problems with this (Internet tabs) but I'm primarily doing these videos to show progress of my playing ability rather than as a performance (although yeah, I hate to put up a really terrible one so I'm fine doing a few takes). I first heard of Gold Motel playing "Rocksmith 2014" ("Brand New Kind of Blue") and I checked out this song and kind of liked it. A while later I needed to pick a song to transcribe as part of my guitar lessons and thought this would be good since it wasn't a straight I-IV-V and had a few interesting chords. Eventually I did the transcription and figured I might as well do a video of it. I cheated a little for this video in that I later (after I transcribed it!) found an acoustic version of "These Sore Eyes" that showed a few chords that I suspect are different than the album version-- I kind of liked them so I used them (the add13 chords).

    Another classical piece from Fredrick Noad's book. -- still not super difficult but a little bit tougher with independent movement on the melody and the bass. The rhythms are somewhat independent as well with some dotted notes thrown in as well.

      Hi Larry, yes, it isn't very good. The reason I'm doing these videos is to show the process and progress of learning to play guitar rather than great performances. ***** I appreciate your response and I do understand your reason for doing this. Also, my apologies for such sarcastic comments. Not only that, your humble response gets my respect. When I fired off my comment I was at the end of a frustrating search for a completely correct video link for one of my students who just wanted the rhythm guitar part. There are some good ones for the lead/rhythm together, but not the chords. It also illustrates my ongoing frustration with internet tabs/chords. An example is the bass part you are playing. It's right for the 1st half of the verse, but not the second while you're playing the chords correctly. I realized quickly that with all the info out there, you have to be discerning in what you use; i.e., try to match up the tabs/chords with what you hear and/or see and believe to be correct. I have a lot of young students that are certain they know better than I because they "saw it on the internet." Sometimes they're right, more often they're not. It takes a concerted effort to get things correct whether you're doing it by ear, from tabs, videos, or whatever. I'm not immune to this either, believe me. But there are no shortcuts. Those so-called shortcuts often cut the time but don't give you a correct route to get to your destination, right? So, please accept my apology for a nasty response. And keep pickin'. It's all a journey, and a long and rewarding one at that.

    • @jec5476
      @jec5476 10 лет назад

      larry geetar That's quite alright-- I've had a few people complain about the quality of my videos and I totally understand that when you're looking for how to play something you don't want to wade through a bunch of really bad examples to find the good one. I wish you luck on this song-- I didn't find much when I recorded it and sadly, if you watch the film clips they really aren't playing it (hey, they're actors) so that doesn't help at all.

    So this was sort of a minor song for David Bowie, but obviously Nirvana made it fairly popular with the MTV Unplugged In New York concert. In fact, I think Nirvana did a much better job with the song. My version is mostly based on the Nirvana acoustic version although I used David Bowie’s lyrics and sort of went for more of his vocal sound. This has a lot of guitar in it (well, technically just one guitar but I played lots of parts with it). I kept going back and thinking- you know, I should add that part in and eventually ended up with a cut and paste version. One thing I learned is why studio engineers write down the settings they used when they record. I went back and had to fiddle quite a bit to match up some of the parts. I think it turned out okay. Oh, the guitar is tuned down a half step (Eb). As for the playing- the hard part of this song is the strumming pattern. It has both mute/ghost notes and open playing. I think I got it pretty well here on the rhythm guitar part. For the solo, I never noticed how “sanded” your fingers get on acoustic when you slide up-and-down 8-9 frets over and over. My fingers got a little abused toward the end and sadly it shows a little bit. For the acoustic runs in the chorus they turned out to be easier than I thought so I added them in. I tried to find a good bass part for this but alas, the internet didn’t really have anything and I don’t think it really needed it. Some drums would have been nice, though. Vocal processing was pretty involved. I EQ’ed down the low end (it didn’t do much), add Compression, Tape Delay (cheap version of ADT), Flanger, Reverb, and Stereo Spreader. I have no idea what David Bowie did, but it seems in the ballpark. I’m currently still working on learning to read standard notation (more classical but starting to get into independent bass and melody notes). Also, just started “Johnny B. Goode” which seems like it is going to be a real tough one.

    The Zombies are a favorite band of mine and a recent episode of Mad Men reminded me how great this song is. This was a difficult piece for me mainly because it is a piano piece originally so I had to try to figure out how to make it sound decent on guitar. I tried to stay close to the piano chords and rhythm but I think it turned out a little sparse and had to up the revert to fill in the space that the piano has with its sustain has. This is one of the first songs I’ve really had to listen to and figure out how to play it. It’s sort of “old school” learning like before RUclips and a plethora of Hal Leonard books when you had to figure it out on your own if you wanted to try to play it. I don’t think I have a very good ear for this yet and I did cheat a little bit watching a piano video (C#m! D’oh!). I’m especially happy with the bass part on this. It’s completely figured out from listening to the song and then trying to figure out where to play it. The guitar part, once I had the chords, was actually pretty easy. I even played a bit of drum (snare) on this one since I thought it needed it but the triplets for the hit-hat were a little beyond me so I just did a MIDI loop for that. My singing was pretty good (for me) so I can’t complain to much. All-in-all a success except for the rhythm of the guitar. For a good piano lesson, you might check out: The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year Piano Lesson Part 1 To hear how it’s supposed to sound (by The Zombies with piano): The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year. By the way, the whole album is brilliant and I highly recommend it.

    • @ganirambis
      @ganirambis 10 лет назад

      Nice. If it were me, I'd consider doubling up the guitar rhythm (as compared to the piano rhythm), except with a dotted rhythm DUM de DUM de DUM de DUM, ... or possibly just do that every other time, like: DUM de DUM, DUM de DUM, etc.

    • @jec5476
      @jec5476 10 лет назад

      Yeah, I thought about that but ended up getting a bit lazy since I'd been futzing with this song for a while and wanted to move on. I do think it needs some work and I was wondering if I could better match the piano pattern if I played DUM de-de DUM de-de for the bar with only the higher strings on the "de" part (the treble part seems to move more than the bass on the piano).

    • @jec5476
      @jec5476 10 лет назад

      I watched the video tutorial and it wasn't too hard for me ... but I already see the patterns that he's talking about and understand what chords he's playing without him telling me, and what he's doing makes sense to me both intellectually and at a physical level.

  • @steveaustin2103
    @steveaustin2103 10 лет назад

    Well I had no plans to learn classical - but if this is an easy piece, it's worth a try. Sounds beautiful, which I guess makes sense since you are playing a quality guitar and a nicely composed piece of music. Great job - with the recording too.

    • @jec5476
      @jec5476 10 лет назад

      Yeah, I really like the sound of a classical guitar. I kind of wished I'd started with classical guitar since I'd have learned to read standard notation earlier as well as probably been forced to have better technical early on. That said, I guess there are only so many things you can learn at once and I'm not sure piling that on top would have been a good thing. Thanks to the compliment!

    I'm working on learning to read standard notation (not TAB) for guitar and my guitar teacher recommended a classical guitar book: Frederick Noad's "Solo Guitar Playing 1". This is the first real song in it and I thought I'd give it a shot. Nothing really fancy other than the change from eighth note to triplets (which I hosed up). I don't have it memorized so I'm playing pretty slowly and reading the sheet music. I'm playing about 60BPM and using a metronome to keep me honest.

    The backing tracks are GuitarPro files that I found. This one I found from Googling "Guitar Pro Satisfaction". I then downloaded it into Guitar Pro and exported it as MIDI and imported that into Logic Pro. This gives all the instruments their own tracks which is handy for muting out the parts that I'm playing. I'd highly recommend Guitar Pro-- for the price it is a great tool.

This was 6 weeks after I started playing so everything was new. I was just starting to get how to strum the guitar at this point. I figured it was in E pretty quickly but never quite figured out the D in it before my lesson so I started asking about it in my lesson. Now, I'm supposed to be working on scales and sight reading standard notation but I really wanted to give this a shot. After getting the basic Keith Richard's riff down (which is tricky at first but once you get the slides right, it isn't too hard) the next trick was getting the barely audible acoustic guitar part. It's only 4 chords (and mostly 3) but is has some quick chord changes on the off-beats. I got that down finally and then found out I had to play it at 135bpm which was faster than I thought! I'm pretty happy with the guitar playing in this. My singing, well… it wasn't my worst. One thing that is missing in this is Brian Jone's guitar accent which do turn out to be fairly important in getting the feel of the song down. I might give that a shot or finally do my scales and sight reading.
