My board certification for psych had long questions, 175 questions for 3 hours. It wasn't difficult but then again I studied daily for five months. The exam tired me out. Just driving to Prometrics took several hours, so I felt tired just getting there (THANK GOD FOR GPS!!!). But they were very friendly and did accommodate all they could. I just got licensed in FL as a PMHNP-BC. I still have to get my NPI# and DLE# and get malpractice insurance. Fun paperwork. I probably will get Clozapine certified to make adjustments on the med, but I refuse to get suboxone/methadone certified-I'm not dealing with hard narcs.

Treating depression is tricky. if a person has some kind of bipolar spectrum such as hypomania and you give them an antidepressant they could trigger mania. Primary care physicians should not be giving out psych meds because they are not licensed in psych. Say they become manic from the antidepressant and end up getting in legal trouble they can turn around and sue the prescriber--and not being certified in psych makes the lawsuit more actionable due to breach of standard of care.

taking care of persons suffering from mental illness can be draining...they deserve people who can weather the storm and advocate for them in and outside of the hospital/office...if you are considering entering the mental health field for your selfish reasons like scheduling or the pay...then stay the h*** out of the mental health field...they don't need you

I would love for you to make a video about why you went back to school to get the PMHNP when you were already a DNP FNP. I’m a BSN RN applying to a dual concentration BSN to DNP program. The dual concentration is FNP and PMHNP. I am worried about PMHNP because my background is in surgery, urology, primary care, and quality. So I am not sure it is for me, but there are no FNP jobs in my area. This area is super saturated with FNP’s and CRNA’s as well. So, with only an FNP I would literally have to drive an hour or more one way to work daily. I definitely have less than zero interest in driving for work! I know I can teach and work at admin level with DNP but those jobs are also scarce. So, I think PHMNP is definitely something I want to do in addition to the DNP FNP.

    • @amandalangworthy7162

@breklein3338 it's getting more common for NPs to have both the Family and PMHNP certifications. Some of the courses for the first master's course should count towards the second one.
