    When firing, the lids can be on the teapots? I’m just learning how to use the kiln I got bought from someone else.

    • @BrokenArrowPottery
      @BrokenArrowPottery 8 месяцев назад

      @melindamarner2284, Only "Bisque" should always be fired with lids in place. The reasoning is that they will shrink at the same rate as the bottom part, and still fit when they're done. Even if warping occurs they should still 'fit' and function. As you get more experienced there may be a rare circumstance when you would want to fire them on the same shelf but not 'in place' on the pot. *There are special considerations for firing *glazed* pots with lids so be sure to watch some videos on that topic to prevent "welding" your lids to your pots! Hope that helps. Thanks for watching! Good luck with your new kiln! Cheerio! jw

    I'm going to try your technique on my hard to clean cream color composite kitchen sink. I did a similar technique with oxyclean white powder squirted with Dawn Power spray but I think that the paper towels will make the difference and I have Kaboom spray so..... Thanks for sharing! p

    • @BrokenArrowPottery
      @BrokenArrowPottery 10 месяцев назад

      Hello @Blessedpb, Is 'composite' like a Resin? or Corian? My Mom was very picky about what her sink was cleaned with after she had her kitchen re-fitted with a beautiful Resin/Corian sink. I bought a special cleaner that was especially FOR those kinds of sinks and it worked like a charm. I don't remember what it was called but I do remember it wasn't very expensive. I bought it in a Big Lots store in Texas. It might be worth it to go to the extra trouble with those sinks since they can be damaged with certain cleaners containing bleach. For example I used Clorox on a resin sink of my own and it is permanently discolored... kind of yellowish in a worn spot. The material underneath the glossy finish was easily stained. I'm glad you found my video cleaning enamel porcelain 'inspiring.' I just want to caution you with your 'composite' sink. Thanks for watching! Let me know how it comes out and what you ended up using! Cheers! jw

      @@BrokenArrowPottery I surely do appreciate your warning but youre too late...I've had it for about 5yrs and I've put everything I've got on it. Mr Clean magic erasure with Dawn liquid does as well as anything but takes a lot of elbow work and my elbows are so old that I'm looking for easier ways. :*D Before this sink I had a quality enamel for 20yrs and it still looked new when I replaced with this awful composite. I don't remember what the compositio was but it was top of the line. Anyway, live and learn, sure wish I had my cream colored enameled sink back. I put put a layer of "white Oxyclean" in both sides of sink and sprayed with a mist of water and then sprayed good with Dawn Power Wash spray and the next morning the TX had removed most of the stains. I do think your TX will be more effective because the paper will stay moist longer to keep things activated. Not sure when I'm going to do it but will let you know the results. Thanks again! p

    You're good at making quilts although I don't agree with some of the things you put on them. Some retirement homes do not accept buttons and small objects; as they can be pulled-out of the mat and become a choking hazard. I used to work in a nursing home and you'd be amazed at how strong some of the elderly are. One elderly lady in a wheelchair got a hold of my arm and squeezed it very hard. They have strength.

      Hi @katielove9932! Good points! also mentioned in my video. I expect the staff to use common sense selecting & issuing mats to patients appropriately. (Not a 'one size fits all' is it.) What size do you make them???????????

    • @BrokenArrowPottery
      @BrokenArrowPottery Год назад

      Hi Marina, Mine come out about 18-20" wide and they are usually composed of squares about 5" each. Three rows puts them at about 15" the other direction plus the width of binding, etc. But there are no rules! You want it to be manageable in a person's lap without falling over their knees. Heavier objects are best toward the middle rather than around the edges. I've seen some about the size of a large place mat. I've also learned that a 6-9" wrist-loop on a corner with a snap is good so it can be fastened to the arm of a wheel chair or part of clothing to keep it off the floor. Thanks for your caring & questions. Blessings to you and yours. Sincerely, jw

    You really don’t need the putty on your corners. The slider pad won’t move while you’re quilting, at least not in my experience with them. The pad can be washed in warm, soapy water to restore both the front and back surfaces to original condition. It looks like you have a Pfaff? If so, you might want to give the Sensormatic foot a try for FMQ. I really think it makes the whole process feel more controlled and easier. I noticed that you weren’t wearing your gloves when you tried quilting using the slippery pad you purchased. If you had, the quilt sandwich would probably have moved more freely. I’ve successfully quilted king-sized quilts using mine on a domestic machine. I love the Dollar Store planner idea!!

    • @BrokenArrowPottery
      @BrokenArrowPottery Год назад

      Hi Therese! Gosh, any brand of nails will do as long as they are NOT galvanized. You don't want to expose yourself or students to fumes from the galvanization stuff which is tin, I believe. I remember buying them at Lowe's and I'm sure they're made in China! Of course. My bisque fire: ^04. My glaze fire: ^6. But read the glaze label to be sure your glaze is right for the clay. I always use ^6 clay body. Rainsticks and rattles are a favorite for all ages. Thanks for asking! Have fun with them! Cheers! jw

      @@BrokenArrowPottery I wonder if those nails would work for making low fire (cone 06-04) glaze stilts… I think I need to give it a try! 😉😁

    • @BrokenArrowPottery
      @BrokenArrowPottery Год назад

      Therese, I wouldn't do that for stilts. You'll have everything falling over & sticking together. Even for low fire clay you want the regular stilts with that special wire that will support weight even at high temps. You can purchase that wire for making your own stilts but you need a tougher clay for it. As an alternative you could use little clay balls under unglazed areas of your items. I have done that at school when I didn't have enough stilts for everything and no budget to buy any. They are pricey. Good luck if you try that... it might work once or twice but low fire clay doesn't like to be fired repeatedly. Let me know how it works! Thanks! jw

I have a bunch of nichrome wire, so not worrried about that - just always looking to try new things. You know it can be done and by golly you'll eventually get one that works! Thanks Jeff, you made me feel better about a couple of large lids, "Frisbees," I've made for a big jar... Hi Patricia! I only have the bag & the label says "Sea Mist (blue)." It didn't pop up when I searched for it on Opulence. Either they don't have that one currently or I've made a mistake if it's Standard's... but that sample tile they show sure looks dark... I have used Sea Spray by Opulence (beautiful & runny, lighter and sort of opalescent which rules it out). Another close one is the Step-One of the Coyote brand of Texas Two Step Oilspot which I have also used with a clear gloss over. While looking I saw a new one (to me): 26AquaF Series by Amaco. In all, keep in mind that firing temp, application, clay body, use of underglazes & who mixed the glaze (case in point is that SeaSalt I mentioned). Plus the lighting, photography & videos and the different computers it's viewed on can really skew colors. I'm going to look at that 26AquaF Series by Amaco, a generally stable supplier, and your question has brought to light that I may also be looking for another nice blue when this is gone. Hope that helps! Thanks for your question & for watching! Feel free to communicate if you have more questions or comments. I'll help if I can. Cheers! jw

    WOW, it feels like just yesterday quilting was put aside and you started a summer pottery session, now looking for first cool days for fall firings. YOUR BEAD TREES ARE ABSOLUTLY BRILIANT, a solution like this has been much on my mind, thanks for the details. The bird bath with unglazed edge, I too had someone buy it for the table. Probably because a bath is cheaper than a platter, wish I could sell a platter. Actually, had a lady buy an entire smallish bird bath as a table center piece. I recommended for entertaining she could fill with water and float flowers, candle maybe if monitored. Lots in this kiln. 'Glaze welding' is the term I use for sticking parts together. Have to say nice with the tea pot. Watching now for the next kiln.

They have certainly held up well. Next load is firing as we speak. It's going to stay below 90 today! Days are getting shorter and you'll be gathering greens & making wreaths again soon too. Looove the hearts so much. Are you sure that you didn’t use latex resist on the pots the last time they spit all over? Just asking because that happened to me. My goodness I’ve never seen oatmeal look like that!! Wow!! If that flakes off while firing it would make such a mess! Love your bead tree!!!

    • @BrokenArrowPottery
      @BrokenArrowPottery Год назад

      Hi Michele! Yes it was from the same jar of Amaco "Wax Resist" but the formula actually contains latex for brush-ability I guess. Is that what you used? The difference for me this time was that the piece was higher in the kiln... close to the middle. So the temperature could have varied enough to be a factor. Last time all those spitting pieces were on the bottom where it is generally hotter. What do you think caused yours to spit? And I don't understand my Oatmeal!! LOL! You aren't the first to say how weird that is. It is in the original jar, premixed, etc. I've learned to live with it but might use it more often on vertical surfaces if it would stick to the pot! Ha! Thanks for your comments Michele, and for watching! Cheers! jw
