How about for 8 months taking 2 naps? Experiencing lots of false starts?
Naps at 9 and 1:30. Be sure they have strong independent sleep skills at the front end of the nap or you may experience false starts.
My son will be 2 in Jan 25, and his Montessori daycare does nap time on a cot. They’ve encouraged us to start thinking about introducing a toddler bed to help him nap better while he’s a daycare. He has a hard time staying in his cot if his friends are up, and it’s causing his naps to be shirt, which leads to a cranky bubba, especially around dinner time. After watching some videos, it sounds like the consensus for transitioning is between 2.5-3 years old. And to start introducing the bed for naps at first. I think I’ll just have to have a combo wig daycare that we’re ping to have to wait a bit longer for that transition to a bed, but I might get a bed to start doing afternoon naps in. Do you think that’s a good deal? Or do you wait to do that until closer to 3 as well?
Hi! I definitely recommend waiting until *at least* 3 before transitioning to the big kid bed. His school should have strategies in place to help him learn to stay in his bed during naps and practicing at home will not necessarily transfer the skill to school at this age. At home, he will still get out of bed until he is developmentally old enough to control his impulses. Keep the crib as long as you can!
What if my baby likes to eat a couple times at night? Would I feed him, etc and then sit in the chair? also, my baby will not go to sleep until 11:40pm, I am starting this chair method tonight
I always refer to pediatrician guidance to determine the appropriate number of night feeds based on age and weight. Typically when a child reaches 4 months old, they may have 1 night feed. By the time a baby is 7 months and being offered solid foods, I recommend dropping night feeds with pediatrician approval. If this is a nutritionally necessary night feed and not a snack, then feed the baby and then begin the method again. You've got this!
Thank you Sarah, this was really useful. We had a period of about 2 months where drop offs at nursery were very difficult, and our LO would scream and get very upset, though we were told he would soon calm down and enjoy the rest of his day. We set upon telling him each time we had to go to work, but that we would return, and just recently he’s stopped getting upset! Next stop is the nighttime wakings….
You've got this!!
Great video, thank you for explaining the method so well. Our 2 year old has always relied on being rocked to sleep, but over the last week or so we have managed to progress to him falling asleep whilst we are in a chair by his bed. So tonight we will give it a go with the chair closer to the door! My only concern is, whilst the put downs have improved hugely, he seems to be waking a lot more at night (3-4 times), and will only accept mum coming in to soothe him. I think it’s clear he has separation anxiety, but do you have any suggestions or experience in how to deal with these night wakings?
Happy that this is helpful! Check out my video on separation anxiety for more info on how to manage this during sleep training: ruclips.net/video/cUkny-6zL3k/видео.html
I goofed by getting rid of the crib bc she was climbing. Now she doesn't seem to sleep well in the new bed. 2yr old
That's okay! It's still possible to set boundaries by putting a gate at her door and treating the entire room like her crib!
how should i start. I've been co sleeping since day one and breastfeeding to sleep and night feeds. she will be one oct 4th. where should i start. I'm a first time mom.
Hi mama! The first thing to make sure you have is a PLAN. Once you feel good about your plan, start at bedtime and implement all of the elements of your plan/method. I don't recommend gradually introducing changes as this can cause confusion and more protest. Your child is brilliant and can learn new things- this is the way you will be teaching them a new skill! You've got this!
If they take a short nap, how do we extend it? Do I leave them for the hour?
If you're sleep training and it's the first 2 naps of the day, you'll continue the method you have chosen for the rest of the nap so that they have an opportunity to go back to sleep on their own. If you are not sleep training, you can extend the nap in whatever way works best for you and your little one to get a full hour in!
for how month old baby?
This depends on your baby's weight gain and growth curve. it's best to consult with your pediatrician to see if they are ready to drop a night feeding, but typically I see either 1 or 0 night feeds by the time a baby is 16 weeks old.
Is there such a thing as an 8 month sleep regression?
Hiiiii! Yes, definitely! But it typically means they're ready for 2 naps (9:00 am and about 1:30 pm)!
Quick question , can parents take it in turns to do this or should it be consistently one parent?
Whichever parent starts the round needs to do the entire round until they are asleep. The other parent can take the next shift the next time they wake up, though. Just don't switch parents in between rounds!
@@yourzenbabysleep thank you. Going to start this at the weekend 🙏
@@skyanna123 You've got this!!
I just tried the chair method for the first time with my 8 month old for his nap who had been co-sleeping and side-nursing 1-3 times a night. He cried and banged his head for 25 min but I didn’t give in and pick him up. I just rubbed him and reassured him and he fell asleep after 25 min and whimpered with short breaths for another 7 min and then was peacefully sleep until a loud noise awoke him about an hour later. Wasn’t sure what to do at this point.
Hi! I'm proud of you for making the choice to sleep train in a way you feel comfortable with!! Once you decide to implement chair method, you do the same method for every single waking, whether it's a natural waking from the baby or unexpected waking due to environmental sound. This teaches consistency and helps the baby feel confident in the consistent response. I would highly recommend a sound machine with pure white noise set to 70 decibels to avoid wakings from loud noises!
@@yourzenbabysleep got it! Thanks a lot. ☺️

@@Ambika1221 thank you so much!! I’m always so happy to help 🤍
we are trying this with our almost 6 month old , first we started with night of 55 mins of crying.. 2nd day naps were sooo easy , 2nd night was again 55 mins of crying .. 3rd day naps are going horrible, 20 mins of crying, 30 mins of sleeping and then again 20 mins of crying seeing a lot of resistance.. I am scared for how many more days to expect to see this and when can I expect things to go better??
Hi! Typically we should start to see improvement with bedtime and overnights within the first week, so you have a few nights ahead of you yet. Naps will start to improve during the 2nd week of training. It's also important to keep in mind that being 100% consistent in the method will help reduce the crying. Making sure you are napping him on a biological sleep schedule (see videos) and that bedtime is early enough will also affect the efficiency when implementing.
Welp that intro is very disheartening, lol. I'll be back to this video in a month I guess, if I'm still sane. 😞
Ugh I know. Newborn naps are notoriously unpredictable but I always want to share an honest perspective instead of making you more insane trying to figure things out ☺️ getting help during the day and taking a break can be really important in these early weeks!! Hang in there, mama!
My 3 year old went from being an amazing easy sleeper to continuing to ask for more water and that it’s too dark. He is in his crib at this point and He is truly freaking out screaming and shaking. We have stuck to our guns and not given him more but end up leaving the room. I set a timer and I go back in every 10/15 mins if he is still crying and I sing with him and leave again. Please help! Should I keep going back in? It is on to let him cry it out?
You're doing all the right things! At this age, don't be afraid to put a dim red nightlight in the room to help with bedtime fears and it's okay to put a spill proof water bottle in the crib as well. However, these likely aren't the reasons he's freaking out and he's using them as an excuse for attention, which is TOTALLY developmentally typical!! It's not uncommon for toddlers to throw a tantrum at bedtime for 1.5 hours before falling asleep and that will reduce drastically if you feel comfortable staying out the whole time, knowing he's safe and watching him on the monitor. You've got this!
How long does a new schedule usually take to become consistent for them?
It could be as quickly as a week but for some babies it may take some time. This is dependent on their age and sensitivity!
What if 6:30 isn’t an option in our home? Because of work schedules we need a 9-9 schedule
You can shift bedtime later but the average wakeup time for kids up to the age of 7 years old is between 6:00-7:00 a.m., so the morning time will take a lot more work. Blackout curtains are essential for this!
What if 6:30 isn’t an option in our home? Because of work schedules we need a 9-9 schedule
You can shift these times by about 30 minutes later, and work at changing the circadian rhythm. It's important to keep in mind that most children wake up for the day between 6-7 am, so staying very consistent and taking the time and patience to shift things is essential.
Hi there! I started to sleep training my 6-month-old baby, so far a bit over a week it only works for morning nap… baby cries hysterically for evening nap so i give him breast and we co-sleep at night. He wakes up many times at night (over 4) and i can only prolong his sleep with breast. How to teach him to be able to prolong his sleep on his own? It must be hard to put up with 20-min crying in the middle of the night…
Hang in there, mama! Sleep training is definitely not easy, but once you make the choice to move forward, it's essential that you are completely consistent for all phases of sleep. He can likely fall asleep for his morning nap because he's exhausted from the night before but then continues his overtired cycle the remainder of the day. If you are sleep training, putting him in his own crib is definitely going to be easier on him and result in less crying. Hello! Thank you for this video!! Starting what age can we start to implement this method?
You're welcome! You can start when your baby is 16 weeks old
How can I train for naps if my baby is at the nursery? he is 9.5m old and currently on 2 naps, he is EBF which ofc he is still waiking up at night. should I wean him before sleep train? He also doesn't take the bottle tho so this makes it more difficult.
Great question! If you want to maintain the breastfeeding relationship, you are absolutely able to sleep train and nurse! First step is to talk to your pediatrician to make sure your baby does not need those night feedings and systematically wean down the length of time at the breast. Next step is to put him in the crib awake, so that he is not associating the breast with sleep. You can still breastfeed during the day, don't need to introduce bottles, and expect him to sleep through the night at this age! if you have a non-nursing partner, it is recommended to have them do the first few nights of chair method, in order to support the baby as he learns that nursing is no longer being offered overnight.
It’s been 7 months since we implemented Sarah’s method and it has been a lifesaver. 99% success and extremely consistent results since day 1. Sarah is amazing and we highly recommend her 1-1 support. We transitioned from 2 years of sleepless nights, working in high demanding jobs with very few hours of sleep to a VERY well rested family and a toddler sleeping 10-11 hours through the night.
Thank you so much for the kind words!!! It was a pleasure working with your family and I love all the progress we made 🤍
This is really helpful!! Thank you! I’m 47 with a 3 year old who stopped sleeping thru the night as soon as he turned three. We’ve tried everything and got into some bad habits…rocking, co sleeping, and here I am 2 1/2 months later. I am starting this tonight! And the paci is going in the trash.
You've got this!!! So happy that it was helpful!
How has it been for you? Did this help at all?
@@sammyydell886 we are still dealing with it. But I believe the underlying issue is iron deficiency. He has been a lot better for a few weeks now since he is getting a good vitamin with iron. I’m about to try the chair method again now that he is doing better.
Is this appropriate to try with a 4.5 month old?
Yes! I recommend this method starting at 4 months old
Perfect timing! I was literally just thinking about this last night and stressing about it. 😂 you’re the best. Thank you!❤
You’re so welcome!!
Tell me how old your baby is and what their wake windows are!
I’ve been trying a similar approach lately and there’s nothing I can really do during the check in to calm them down other than pick them up. Assuming we don’t pick them up, does the “clock” restart at any point? Should we let them continue to cry?
Hi! When you go in to check, stay for about 30-60 seconds, and then leave and reset the clock for the next timed increment. If he is still crying when the timer goes off, go back in and repeat the above steps. Hope that helps!

This is super helpful!
Awesome! I'm so glad you found it helpful!
thank you so much, for being so honest and specific with these information, my baby is almost 7 months and i’ve tried putting him on his crib and expect him to sleep on his on, but i have had given up, because he cries so hard, but im gonna try the earbuds tip and give it another go. Since his sleep has gotten so much worse after learning how to crawl. I wonder how would I know when to breastfeed him, or whether he still needs those feeds. ( usually 2 - 3 feeds)
You're so welcome! Baby sleep can be tricky, but finding useful resources can really take the mental load off of parents. As far as feedings, I would check with your pediatrician to see what they recommend in terms of night feeds. In general, at this age, some babies are feeing 1 time per night if they are breastfeeding, while others can make it through the night with no feeding. In order to honor the nursing relationship and maintain supply, I usually recommend selecting a "feeding window", usually some time between 12:00 and 2:00 a.m., and offering a feeding during that time period. Then treat all other wakings with the method!
last night was night 3 using the method, but the first night I took his pacifier, he actually slept well and so did I!! I breastfed him around 00:30 and again 5am which its been messing up the rest of the morning feeds, but it feels like progress. Just wanted to thank you again.
