A really fun late game battle that I had in a game a few weeks ago. I had to wrap up recording before I could download the latest patch so it wouldn't mess up the report :P So while this is the original it's worth pointing out that a lot of the high impact spells in this battle have since been nerfed

Excellent victories and great commentary explaining your ideas. Thanks for posting. Please turn on the coloured squares for underwater battles at least, water elementals are particularly hard to see who they belong to.
Deploying your sacreds without a H3 to divine blessing is a major oversight, they also need mage support. You have over emphasised the use of N gems for bramble forts in newly converted forests, the H3 carrion lords are more important at this stage. My self imposed rule is don't put sacred troops in an army without a H3

Huh, now that was odd. Guess he truly was fated to die.
I wonder if the larger independent troop counts and stronger archery, combined with the piercing damage nerf mean that the heavy infantry are better expanders into most of the poptypes you're facing here. Wolf tribe matchups in particular are very armor dependent.

Thanks awkward one even in single player for a less good player like me when the sea has several capitals on it. I found the logistics very risky on incarnate and early water such a diversion that it is a show stopper. Used a dormant Titan to keep dominions tethered and also to block likely amphibious nation or fight water one whilst crossing a land bridge- e.g. neter of crafts. In theory if home sea had no water nation could make a dent in the underwater with backfilling once 2 colonies started and sites/economy - sending undead back to do temple dominion, but they just nerfed Lich queen.
If you had a blood slave for every battlefield wide regen caster sniped by an offscript pillar of fire.

I'm always disappointed by morale plays. Just not much one can do against it.
Some things can be done, they are still hard to handle. Both sides brought fear in their own way, Ubar (me) with wailing winds and Ur with Mushushu, and they both had significant impacts. You just had to barrel through, and I think if Ur's Anzus had gotten a lucky snipe on the Banu Silat holding wailing winds it would have gone way differently. Luck was not on their side this fight, unfortunately
@@kirbyone Yes. Ur did have a lot of bad luck this fight. That snip on the Mass Regen caster was fight defining. I'm sure they would have lasted longer under wailing winds otherwise. Good show of the fight. Lots of great suggestions for players here so no need to share mine.

With legion's demise being weakened, I'd expect that would favor Ubar, but who knows how much impact pillar of fire sniping had in the displayed battle removing regen. It is very hard to beat wailing winds in sustained fights though, w/o growing fury or rigor blocking retreat etc. Unless you're down for making everything berserk really early in the fight, you have no choice but to try to win very fast against wailing winds. I think in Dom 6 you can also last with enough H2 spamming...unlike stacked fear auras, wailing winds won't spam the checks hard enough. I saw a fight where a horror harmonica golem got turn timer'd by MA Mari off of that.
@@TheMelnTeam I've seen mages last a long time under Wailing Winds now as well. Seems possible to fight under which is nice.
Cool late game fight! I do love how summer Fairy Queens have very low morale as an interesting in game puzzle to solve. it seems like the typical answer taken is to put them to sleep for the whole fight after putting up Legions Demise to prevent routs, but it can be hard with Relief up to do that.
Ur probably didn't need relief much for the fight either with fire res keeping heat from hell as a non-issue. Yeah the queen might have done a lot more damage if it had been able to stick around longer than 7 rounds. A lot was not know or expected on both sides, so it's hard to plan for every eventuality!
@@kirbyone Relief is big for breath weapon attacks like the Anzus, so probably still good to have scripted.

Very cool fight! Thanks for sharing. I cant help but wonder about Ur's tactics though. They could have cast growing fury and I think that would have made a big deal. Maybe they were going to but lost the N caster to pillar of fire. Not having backup casters and forward positioned evocation bait hurt Ur a lot. The biggest question I have is why were the anzu set to fly? Their breath attacks are their strength, not their melee. I would have had a line of mechanical men meet the ghuls, with a line of anzu behind them firing cold breath. I guess armchair generals will always have shit to talk 😂
I guess that the Ur player hoped that the anzu would hit and disrupt/kill Ubar's mages. Also, had Ur gotten Army regen off, those anzu would have lasted a lot longer, possibly long enough to win the fight. It was a close battle that Ur could easily have won with a bit more luck.
I definitely have to try not to armchair it myself too. There were a few telegraphed things on both sides, like Ur's big blob of Anzus and Ubar's (my) hordes of ghuls. I think the latter was in some part why Ur went with Legion's demise, which was smart. My choice of Army of Lead was due to having Adepts of the Iron Order from a throne, and I had gotten to artifacts first. But the Ur player didn't get a chance to see my full composition before this battle because of magic phase, and I did not see theirs either, so we ultimately had to go with best guesses. That round 1 snipe of his army regen caster was unplannable as well 😂 I think like Kris says it was pretty close for sure
There's some things I could have done differently for sure. But yeah, I didn't know what exactly I was going to be facing there, it was our first big fight and I hadn't seen the army in action yet. Fun fight and fun game overall though, for sure.
Evo 2 is worth getting early. Alt for spamming ethereal and mistform will help if enemy lacks mwep. I think players underestimate the utility of monsters outside of expansion. They're barely worse in combat than titans, if at all (if you point buff)...the tradeoff is mostly between magic phase utility vs immediately capable of taking provinces. For monsters like drakon, I like their chances even against geared titans if you give point buffs until the mid-late game gear. Unfortunately, the island start makes a lot of them questionable, aside from earth serpent and dracolich. Quickness + mist form + ethereal is pretty good, though the serpent would still like regeneration point buffed that's hard for Phaecea. Some hell blesses can hammer through this, but it's not common for hell blesses to BOTH resist lightning bolts AND have hard hitting mwep to hack through an ethereal sack of 30ish prot. It's also your best try to contest water (more time to get indies/set up PD, if you can get enough breathing items for mages to join your stuff UW). Either way, it will be quite some time before full scales catches up to expander income just because expander can hit the UW right away while troops can't. I don't think scales or a bless can contribute as much to defeating a rush or rapidly getting material to use offensively in 1st war for this nation. The sacred can't do that much lifting, and the scales body count, while eventually higher, is slower to ramp up.
8k gold income on turn 40ish as a popkill nation; I guess getting ahead of your Dominion can be huge.
Yeah the steamroller was real this game. That's four caps with another under siege, yeah one is Asphodel itself which is dead, but you barely feel it. Plus I haven't spent gold to build a single fort this game, and all labs and temples are cheap in forests. Gold goes almost exclusively to mages and troops, it's a bit obscene
Didn't turn out too bad. My favorite sort of mistakes if I have to make them. Thanks for sharing!
@@DarkSideCookies yeah, rewatching my battles I remind myself that I did ultimately win all those battles 😛 pretty decisively too given the replays. So I can complain...but I probably shouldn't heh. Goes to show the strength of the new Asphodel!

Interesting pretender design. I love GSE for the project self into gifts spam. You've got the SE paths for astral, the GE paths for glamor, you can do rune smashers, and got an nice early focused scales layout. Do you feel like the titan chassis and its benefits were worth it considering you had to pay so much to break into new paths? Yeah, expansion seems too cautious now, but it was so long ago back in mid February. Very understandable
The Titan chassis for me is in great part because of not having the forge malus in order to hit key paths for boosters. In hindsight I generally dislike taking death on Phaeacia, even though the early game impact is low it just feels icky lol. Obviously I wasn't able to turn it into useful output for expansion. And I'm also less and less a fan of misfortune 2 heh

I wonder if you had enough resources to make an all archers expansion party to kill barbarians and wild tribe... 400 or so buys 55 Phaecian Archers... I think that's not quite enough, but certainly that plus the Markata should have expanded. The Throne and farm in your cap circle seems like it probably impacted expansion significantly... I'm used to order 3/prod 3 being a lot more resources in MA, once the cap circle is clear.
Incidentally I wind up having a similar thought about dealing with barbs very soon thereafter! I think I could have taken the throne if I had focused on it, but I was feeling under pressure to expand outwards before all my neighbors did the same. In theory having a throne in your cap circle is great for keeping it guaranteed to be yours...but not great at this exact moment lol

It's certainly not an auto-win button! 😄Against howl I've been very annoyed by it, but there are some circumstances where attack closest is still what you want

I know there is some time after the release of dominions 6 but i gonna ask. Have any of you opened dominions without knowing that they put a new magic path looked at it and ask themselves "WTF is with the dildo".
Not with that one specifically, but I will say I've had conversations about that very topic about the Idol of Sorcery!
I'd even go so far to say that Mistform/defense based thugs are better in Dominions 6, because of the new fluffable buffs and Evocations the magic weapons bless is no longer ubiquitous.

Fire Flies, Storm Wind, Body Ethereal all seem overtuned, and Lightning Bolt, Shatter, and smites all seem undertuned from my experience so far with vanilla ai casting I hope you pull off a great Phaecia experience soon :) Yeah, my personal bar for a national overview is I typically like to experience that nation's late game as well. Very understandable

Ind and Agartha definitely seem asleep to the game state; they neither vultured phlegra/Nazca nor went to war with Asphodel, leaving him with the majority of the plane already in hand turn 24. At this point, I expect they'll need help from the underwater plane powers to fight a coalition war that doesn't lose very quickly...

Ok so 1) this didn't need to be 10 minutes but 2) I'm going to wildly speculate about archer behavior. The spellcasting AI includes the chance to hit friendly squares as a negative to the spellscore to be subtracted from the positive value of the likelyhood of doing damage to the enemy square. In this case IF archers follow similar rules (and I have zero proof that this is the case), their hypothetical archercalc might be returning a very low score for the hard to damage thug but with a negative for potentially hitting the hawks that outweighs it. If this is the case then the archers resume firing once there are few enough hawks to trip it the other way. This is wildly speculative and I'm definitely guessing somewhat, but its the only thing that neatly explains the results. Oh and as demonsthenes pointed out, fire and keep distance keeps them from getting close enough for the fire to be a "guaranteed" hit in whatever calc they're using

A change before the archers start shooting is the last bird in the square south of the aker dies. Not wanting to shoot their own birds seems most likely. We could repeat the test with different orders

I've seen the "archers not shooting while enemy thug is surrounded by friendlies" behavior consistently with illusory army vs thugs. My hunch is that this is from the archers calculating likely friendly damage (inclusive of dispersion). Once enough friendlies die so that there are more empty squares near the target, they start shooting.
Interesting! I'll keep an eye out for it. Perhaps archers firing in on thugs is just not super great in general
The eye shield, while useful in subsequent fights with the units it blinds, doesn't actually end up doing much to stop damage from going through in melee, because the akerbeltz is very rapidly harassed down to 0 defense, so only having like 3 attack skill isn't actually much of a disadvantage.
Good point. Another layer of defense that helps cancel attacks like awe or bewilderment would have gone a long way I think

I think the cause is the fire and keep distance order. Usually archers will advance to point blank range when friendly fire concerns agents a single surrounded thug make it inadvisable to shoot from a distance... But I think the order to keep distance prevented them doing so.
Honestly that seems the most likely now that you mention it. The settings that judge the distance between the two match up poorly
If you don't want to move something on top of ongoing siege to secure it, you can garisson one trash troop, so even if you lose and retreat that one trash troop stays and continues the siege
