It is not a good thing, I would suggest, to be questioning the validity of unofficial [ie local non-Jewish] marks of commemoration as anything other than sincere and unforced acknowledgements of horrors that had happened. They should be lauded as such, and not talked away or diminished by pseudo-academic discussion of their "social relevance". This latter approach leads objectively to belittlement and alienation of those non-Jewish actors. (But maybe this is intended, by some, I wonder...)

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Majdanek camp. My Grandmother’s brother was murdered there in 1942, but we can’t find any records from the camp. He was only 20 years old 😢 I will definitely buy your book to learn more about what Janina did in Majdanek.

From your narrative:"During the WWI the Germans partially devastated the synagogue". Perhaps you should add that there are no Jews left in the village because all of them were taken out into the forest by the Nazis and murdered.

There was no such thing as ,,holocaust" in Poland. There was no Poland in that time. It was ,,Gross Deutschland!". The GERMAN occupation, the GERMAN terror under the GERMAN law. If you are going to Dublin, many start from an other place, that ,,holocaust in Poland".

Most hiding places were quite prosaic: attics, cellars, dugouts in fields and forests, bunkers, etc., many Ingeniously camouflaged. However, I am impressed by Natalia Romik's dedication to tell the story of the efforts of Jews to survive the Holocaust and of the courage of those in the local population to shelter their Jewish brethren. I would venture to guess that the overwhelming majority of those places no longer exist.

seems the jews that fled to the forest and hid in various places had a better chance of surviving the war than the Jews that went to the concentration camps.

This talk gets better and better as it goes along. Really excellent, thanks. The conversations that consider the role of perpetrators alongside the centrally important work of representing victims' experiences in 'meaning making' are enlightening. Also, really grounded thoughts on selfies at memorial sites and the role of fiction towards the end. So glad to have spent the time watching. Thanks again.
