Whats great about this VCR is it can output dub into any signal format, mine which is a Panasonic multisystem cannot output dub onto a different signal format, its useless for my needs, Samsung made one of the best Multi-System VCR's way better than what Panasonic came up with.

40 years later, and I'm till wishing for an animated as adaptation of this. Er, maybe with a few less SA orges

Amethyst was my first introduction to traditional comic books. My dad use to go garage sale shopping, and at one house there were a selection of Amethyst comics that I bought as, like you, the covers caught my eye. I adored them! They were a bit more adult themed, but I’d been reading MAD Magazine, so it wasn’t too scandalous for me, and I soon followed it up with Vampirella. 😂 I lost my set ages ago but noticed they are available in digitizable format, so I might be adding them to my Kindle just for nostalgia’s sake. Thanks for posting. Brought back memories.

What do you mean oddly enough the same thing happens to Carnalian? It was established in the series that he's originally from Earth (which is why he has technology that seems out of place in Gemworld) and the reason Amethyst de-ages (because time passes differently between the two dimensions) equally applies to anyone who's gone between the two worlds.

What, no final thoughts on the series? Also, no mention of the issue that's technically stuck in the middle of a Legion of Superheroes comic (which directly ties into the events of this 12 issue series- which makes reference to it as early as issue 7? And of course she goes back to her 13-year-old life, that's the life she knew, the Hero's Journey involves return to the ordinary world. The whole business with Dark Opal was a conflict she may have been destined to be part of but ultimately she just got pulled into. She doesn't know the politics of that world, she knows nothing of leadership. As far as she's concerned, the main issue is dealt with and now the people have to reorganize the country. Why should she be part of that? She's 13.

I don't get why there's a subplot about Dark Opal's dissatisfaction with no proper heirs. It doesn't seem to be a goal he's actually working towards. We don't know what he wants. The whole series, he just wants to get power from all the 12 houses for his fancy breastplate, but why though? It's never been established what he plans to do with the power, he as no apparent end goal. He doesn't seem to think citizens are incapable of ruling themselves and need his direction or anything. He's never expressed dissatisfaction with the way the House of Amethyst was running things before he took over. Also, while it's heavily insinuated that Gemworld used to be cool but sucks ever since Dark Opal took over, the narrative doesn't really illustrate how so outside of his men being evil dicks. I mean... he forces arranged marriages to screw with line of succession for no apparent reason, he imposes human tithes with unclear details.... that's about it. Nothing about kingdoms being allowed to fall into disrepair, nothing about famine or lack of clean water sources, dangerous wildlife seems to only ever come up when on their way to his headquarters (not a general issue)... whatever problems befell Gemworld after Dark Opal took over (outside of him and his men dicking them around) are really vague. Then this issue has the gall to establish that he's some kind of political manipulator? Where the hell did that come from? The series has told us next to nothing about any of the kingdoms, and now the politics between them suddenly matter? It feels really out of place for throne ascension politics and who is loyal to whom and why to suddenly come up as such a big plot point, _especially_ when she hasn't shared even a single scene with any members of either house Topaz or Sapphire. Political dramas inherently do not work without the audience understanding the stakes and motives, but none are given here. The implication seems to be that Sapphire is loyal to Dark Opal (confirmed in a later issue), but that was not really established as of this point in the story. Princess Sapphire has only been in like one panel of the entire series so far, and she wasn't portrayed as villainous then. We don't really know ANYTHING about her. Also, why is anyone loyal to Dark Opal? I thought it was like universally accepted fact that he sucks and the previous king and queen of Amethyst were beloved rulers. Heck, why are even his henchmen loyal to him? It's implied to be rule by fear, but that only goes so far without sufficient details, which there aren't. You have to give a reason why people side with the villain, something they gain from the alliance or what they lose by not joining the alliance, and no such reason was ever established (it was later just kind of shown she's kind of evil too for no reason?). And as I mentioned in a previous video's comment, why does Dark Opal even care if rule was challenged anyway? He doesn't seem to regard anyone as a threat to him, he just forces everyone to fall in line and they do because only Amethyst is strong enough to challenge him, and he doesn't even feel threatened by her, seems to regard her as unfinished business that he's petty about finishing. And he's right, she's still pretty inexperienced, she can't take him on in a fight yet, I don't think she's technically won any fight yet. He doesn't really have any reason to manipulate through politics and it's unclear how doing so would get him anything he might want.

This was the issue that made me realize Dark Opal is a super lame disappointing villain. There's no nuance to him, no apparent rhyme or reason to any of his evil deeds, he seems to be primarily motivated by "because evil", and not in a fun way. He doesn't seem to want anything, no real goals or objectives beyond gaining power to no apparent end.

That incident wasn't Granch's fault. He went into a pocket Dimension with an ever-shifting invisible exit to rescue his siblings, and had the foresight to place a beacon at the entrance so that his beacon reader could help him find his way to the exit. A monster stole his entrance beacon and so he was stuck there until his beacon reader connected to Amy's gem and with its artificial intelligence decided "seems like a legit beacon" and opened a portal. And Granch was doing all this to secure allies for her, and he would have been trapped there forever if he didn't take the 1-in-a-million chance when it came. It wasn't his fault that his legit plan to address the issue was thwarted and the contingency was chosen independently of his will. And what are you talking about with Carnalian? It was established earlier in the series that he's not from Gemworld and has known that the whole time.

Why did Opal even try to mess with Royal Lineages? He doesn't really have any reason to. He has no reason to feel threatened by anyone except Amethyst, who is too inexperienced to pose much threat now. He's not doing it to secure loyalty because most of the kingdoms hate him and he doesn't seem to need them for anything other than ritual sacrifice that loyalty is moot for. And why was Topaz so in love with Amethyst? He's never even seen her, at best he's vaguely "felt her presence", and somehow he's in love with her? That has not aged well.

The gun was a deliberate contrast with the fantasy world, it was a hint that Carnalian was not native to Gemworld. Weird thing about Gemworld, it's like a PG-friendly Sword & Sorcery world, which doesn't really make sense since Sword & Sorcery is generally about the savage brutality of the distant past.

I'm glad the soon ditched the headdress in the series because it looked really stupid, but I lament that they hardly went anywhere with the concept of a 13-year-old mind dealing with suddenly being in a 20-year-old body.

I remember one, comic Amythst, Princess of the Gemworld, when she meets Superman. They could given her and Superman become "friends ", a rival, to his feelings for Lois.❤😘😏😉

I have been reading the DC universe in order and just finished with this mini. This Catwoman series was a confusing mess. The cherry on top is the times when Batman appears in front of the police and they seem to be cool with him despite that this takes place during Batman Year One when he is a fugitive and public enemy #1.

I just read issue 1, found at a novelty store, watched the 7 ep CN mini-min8 series and found your review. Creepy rapey vibe indeed. I like the modern update on the CN series. With SheRa back, Amethyst could easily come back too.

A great device. Isn't it fascinating that even such a high end vcr can't convert French vhs tapes ;) Tried that with my multi system vcr and it came out in black/white. Man the French !

I remember watching most of these shows when they were first broadcast. It was a tremendously exciting time for a young boy. Also, that woman who bought a Commodore PET to run her sweet shop went on to become the founding member of Anonymous.

Just wanted to say thank you for this :) been on the whisky and was just searching for UK old computer stuff. In 83 / 84 I was doing my A levels at school and worked part time at Boots on their computer department. Wind forward a bit and I'm now sitting here in my 50's and have collection of around 30 of the home computers from that era .... whisky and nostalgia kicking in, do fancy playing 3-d Defender on the ZX-81 .... BRB :)

Regarding the Edmonton one, even back in the Vhs heyday, who purchased a tape to learn about restaurants? Very odd. Hemingway's looked like some random person's home. I would feel uncomfortable eating there. The other selections were random as well. "Hey here's a building. It has a restaurant in it. You should go there because...food. We have electricity." Anyways, I didn't realize Edmonton was like the Paris of Canada. Very romantic indeed.

Awesome video. Great editing. The Personal Computer magazine part was hilarious. "Just turn to page 184." And I love the Willy Wonka-esque parts..."I am now telling the computer exactly what he can do..." as they are using a rotary phone to dial in. Long pauses as they try and hope the thing works. The hunchback part made me chuckle as ironically it would be future programmers who end up sprouting the very same hunched back! One question: who is the beauty with the XBox controller at 0:29?
