Matt Monro - Before You Go (Vocals Only)
When he said it was Culture Clubs first appearance on TOTP I remembered exactly watching this episode ! I was 19 and everyone shocked at Boy George ! Lol in todays world he'd be considered macho !
Why does no one Pass the Dutchie in the comments?
John Peel turning up to TotP for a paycheck. Better than the motivation of some others...
C-R-I-N-G-E
Ferett ears.
It's a shame this isn't the film version. There is a low bass bit that rolls through out the end section.
I noticed the same thing...
Peel’s introduction for Dollar was SUPERB.
As we now know, the DVD could have been worse!
Loved Shalamar brilliant group. Saw them last year in Croydon. Minus Jodie W. Great night.
Excellent mike
DOLLAR .....Utter utter utter ...........
Brilliant
@@Mr.Wrong1 LOL. Not the word I was thinking .You are wrong Mr Wrong .
@@johnnyfortubehaha I guessed as much. I don't know why, but I always just had a soft spot for them. 🤷♂️
@@Mr.Wrong1 She was cute
What great 😊😊awesome music 🎉, from a great year i love it.
Watching culture club and i can here my dad shouting through into the kitchen, betty quick theres a bloke on the telly dressed as a woman. Ha ha ha
PASS THE DUTCHIE WE USED TO SING PAST THE DOG SHIT BOY GEORGE WAS MIMING THE SONG STARTED BEFORE HE OPENED IS MOUTH
Pass the Dutchie could be mistaken for an organic biscuit in this day and age - Pass the Duchy or, a parlour game played in Windsor 🤔🧐😜
wooo....thank you very much!!!! you could do "a single spark", "Luck and Strange"
Shalamar totally eclipsing the dreary dollar .
“Survivor…very possibly the best group of that name in the whole world.” Classic John Peel 😂
Dollar never quite got up to the heights of Mirror Mirror..
Who were you with in the moonlight 🧨
Yes! Also Videotheque@stepheng8779
Gilmour is a living legend making legendary music, scattered not played here, best song as the year, easily ❤
Was that the first glimpse of Jeffrey Daniel doing the ‘Moonwalk’ at the beginning of Shalamar’s - There It Is?
Why wasn’t eye of the tiger played??
out of the charts as tiger was no 1 july 1982
Still rocking Shalamar today in November 2024 ..
Is this on the bbc iPlayer?
Love There it is by Shalamar

Excellent Mike
Spoiler alert: Mixed feelings about this. Sure, it couldn't get made these days because it's too blunt and disturbing over a taboo subject matter, and for that reason it's an important historical archive. Part of its problem, though, is frankly it's too blunt. Roald Dahl builds it up but it's hardly a genius plot. Child murderer is on the loose, young girl gets stalked by man then duped by lady in league with him. Bit obvious from the point the lady gets involved. It's basically just a horror, and doesn't have anything original or aesthetic to say, so as such the nastiness is not justified, unless the flypaper symbolism is supposed to be enough. You're basically just showing a dramatisation of Brady and Hindley in action, with a bit of window dressing. 'Oh, let's have a 20-minute child abduction for this week's Tale'. Still, I'm not as angry at losing 20 minutes as I am with a lot of crap. It was decently crafted, and shouldn't be forbidden from being made, which the modern day nanny state would do. It's ironic it was allowed to be made then, so soon after the real thing, yet in 2024 we couldn't abide it. The most chilling thing was Sylvia's reaction at the end when the guy walks in (actress Lorna Yabsley); that said it all. Not showing what happens to her is damned chilling, because it makes all the more obvious.
It *is* a horror, indeed; and the brilliance lies in the unexpected nature of the plot and the chillingly open-ended conclusion. Admittedly, I read the story by Elizabeth Taylor before I saw this and whereas the conclusion is a genuine surprise there, it might be less so here. (Hard to tell as I already knew what was coming...) Either way, it is a fine example of the short form. With regard to 'nastiness', that strikes me as a rather ridiculous accusation; the story hardly glamourises Sylvia's kidnapping. Rather, it forces the viewer to view things from an eleven year old's prematurely jaded but naive eyes.
Shalimar that guys got his lunch in his trousers or just pleased to see me

How can a human create this?
Superb song by Shalamar!
one of many classics they did.
Another Leon Sylvers gem .
Ferret ears
So glad I was in my late teens in this era. Music was superb (mostly!)
Great disco group
I have the alarming habit of writing a detailed comment/review as I watch these old TOTP. For context, I was 15 in 1982. John Peel was the man who defined my taste in music more than anyone else. I even heard stuff like the first song on Peel’s show, although not very often at all. More likely it was The Birthday Party or The Fall or The Comsat Angels or the wealth of world music and reggae that he would regularly play. David Christie’s song was OK, if a bit slight and repetitive. I remember Fat Larry’s song “Zoom”, it has a nice, memorable melody which reaches up high in the chorus. I love the deep harmonies (presumably Larry himself) the tinkle-bells and the great out-chorus, another variation of the melody. Dollar: the bouncy synths are nice - but I have absolutely no memory of this song whatsoever. It’s brilliant technically, but otherwise: Mr and Mrs Fluff. David and Denise Fluff. The TOTP studio around this time was like a set of neon cages to contain the artists. The artist names are so primitive looking compared to today. Ooh Shalomar, there it is, indeed. It’s kind of like the previous song melodically but it has a bounce and groove, awesome harmonies and a proper hook in the chorus. I have a theory that the guitar sound of Chic was very influential in 80s music, and it appears here in the chorus, funky as anything. Jody rocks those go-go boots! Yes, Peely played Musical Youth and I think even had them in for a “Peel Session”. Oh yeah, he says as much! Absolutely brilliant performers for their age, a clever little song musically, it’s sweet sounding and innocent but those of us in the know knew what the title meant 😉 I was a indie punk rebel but I still have my copy of Culture Club’s debut. I thought it was a beautiful melody with a dub-like rhythm section and an amazing bridge section. The b-side was an incredible dub version. I don’t think they really followed up properly on this - their records became overblown compared to this simple gem. Chicago’s song is familiar from a zillion radio plays. Again it benefits from its ambient simplicity. Also the typical 80’s reverbed drums which just sort of plod away. Evelyn King delivers another funky groove, right on time. The Moog bass worked very well on many 80s dance songs. The arrangement is kept to the lower frequencies to let her voice through clear, then some twinkly piano join the harmony vocals during the chorus. There’s even some soling on this record! It would have benefited from a middle-8 section. Rockers revenge -a bit meh but OK. All in all, a decent episode from a great year of diverse and interesting music!1
Fgs I lost the will to live looking at that comment 😂
@ Hope you feel better soon lad
You have no idea how grateful I am to you for this post! Too bad it's not available in the 1080p option. 😭I would like to know if you have in your archive the episode from July 12, 1996. The same name was not broadcast in the recent rerun for some idiotic reason. I would like to see her mostly because of Belinda Carlisle's performance. And one more request: Could you upload Belinda's performance from this episode (September 20, 1996) separately and have it in 1080p? I'm not from Britain so I can't access the official BBC TOTP archive, and those recordings of her in the best quality would mean a lot to me. Thanks in advance and best regards to you. 🍻Steve.
Sorry, I don't have that in 1080. I don't have that other episode either.
@@mikef7112 ok...thank you...
Thanks for this Mike. Missed it elsewhere so glad to find it on here!
Interesting version 👍👍
I live this track by Van McCoy. I was just 14 when it was released in 1977.
Another Unbelievable David Gilmour song and solo!! WOW!! Keep em cumming!!
Unfortunately, the film version was not on the 2CD "expanded" score. Neither was the film version of Bond Sailing (was really hoping for this version!).
Perhaps they’ll surface later. Although the quality is fantastic of the expanded album, its story of how it surfaced is unknown at least to me. With no official announcement of an expanded score, it still brings mystery to where some of these tracks are. After my first listen tonight Control Room takes my favorite :)
wow , just fantastic as an instrumental....thanks
Bit sick really..
Watched this as a kid in the 80's, still sends a shiver down my spine. Truly chilling horror is hard to come by these days. Studios tend to want jump scares every five minutes because everyone's attention span is getting shorter by the generation to the extent that the art of generating suspense is more or less dead
Brilliant shocker of an ending!
It's Beautiful Voice 🎉
One of the best episodes 👌🏻
