I met John in 1973 at the National Flatpicking Championships in Winfield KS, when I went with my friends, The Fall Creek Band. Newgrass Revival played a couple of sets during the championship, and completely blew our minds because of the outright mastery of their instruments and voices. This was a new sound that we were hearing, Rock and Roll on bluegrass instruments and it wasn't so much the notes but the space between the notes which got us. At night everybody was standing around "jamming" and we were amazed that the young kids and old timers played so beautifully, and in fact a 14 year old kid (with his mom on an accordion) won the flatpicking championship. On the last day the Fall Creek Band went up to Sam and said, "we are starting a bluegrass festival in Telluride Colorado, do you want to come? to witch Sam said, "well, where is Telluride"? and they said, "come on we'll show you". The rest is history because Telluride Bluegrass was the place to be in June for so many musicians who came to jam with Sam and NGR. Sam has now spent 48 years "straight" (consecutive, ha) delighting us with his truly awesome talents, he is a "magnet", and drew musicians close. There would never have been a Telluride Bluegrass if it wasn't for The Fall Creek Band and I honor them here. I lived in Telluride for 30 fun-packed years as a plumber, husband and father and it was the best of times in the canyon and on the mountain, with so much turmoil going on everywhere else in the world. John Cowan sang "when a man loves a woman", in 1975 and it set the stage for my 49 year marriage to Lexie, his voice was/is unmatched in my opinion.

Made a lot of mistakes after the Regatta tour ended. Shouldn't have rushed the third album, Milton Keynes and Dublin were a waste of time, should have played a proper UK tour in December 1980 not a couple of dates in a tent. The Zenyatta tour finished way too early. Gateshead 1982 was a huge misjudgement when they could have probably sold out Wembley Stadium - a venue the Police never played. They could certainly have sold out the Stadium in summer 1984 on the back of another mainland Europe tour in Spring 1984. Shocking that Europe got so few shows in October 1983.
