Ariel Atom 4 on display at a local classic car show. Parked separately to the classic cars so as not to cause confusion. Kids and people of all ages just got so intrigued by what it was! Loads of photos and I allowed sit-ins for excited kids.

Got thwacked in the face side on by the low flying pigeon. Quite an impact and hurt a fair bit for a couple of days! a few inches either way could have been bigger disaster. it would crashed in to my nose or got sucked in the intake behind!

First run of 2022 after winter hibernation. Testing audio with new recorder. Most audio from left ear piece due to placement of recorder in my front jacket pocket. Basically as the driver would hear it.

I chose a few of my favourite artists / drive songs to go with the drive. The Atom's sound cannot be truly captured by my recording equipment. I can only describe it as Darth Vader sucking his breath and then chuckling - at 100 db - all the time - next to your ear! So I have added a few from my driving playlist. Its all Bollywood / Indian but then so am I :)

A half hour stop in Bourton-on-the-Water lead to this largely unedited video. Not a moment without some one passing being curious, bewildered and some even talking to my Mrs and I at length. The car was swamped from all sides although the there is only one camera and other side could not be covered. I have never seen such consistent noticeability of a car across all ages - children to aged peop...

The new Atom finally arrived this year for me after a wait of 30 almost 30 months! It is well worth the wait though and an experience that cannot be explained till you get in the car.

It's the most beautiful sound I've ever heard! I had a Granturismo S box F1 with an Xpipe supersprint, the car sounded like thunder. but this is even better! even more beautiful to listen to… real music! Congratulation ! I currently have a Lotus Evora S & I am looking to buy a quattroporte in Duo Select to put an exhaust like this on it!

Yes! Pigeon or any bird is rather unexpected but they seem to be flying low and heavy after early morning feeding and we sadly see quite a few becoming roadkill on Sunday morning drives.

Hi from Perth Western Australia. I am looking to purchase here soon. May I ask what your actual Exhaust setup is as know there are quite a few options with formula dynamics Larini , eg, headers , cats , X or H pipe. Also does you car have a separate tune as well as FBW throttle box. Grazie for any advice. Dom.
Hi Dom all options are available here: www.larinisystems.com/collection/maserati/quattroporte-s1-duoselect . Mine has the Sports cats Part No: LA0241SCAT, x-pipe Part No: LA0079CSCENT and sport exhaust with quad pipes Part No: LA0012SRS. Yes FBW drive by wire is present but no engine tuning. You will get the screamig F1 or V12 like sound with x-pipe and more of a V8 burble with H-pipe.

Where are your helmets,guys?
Helmet is for track driving, long motorway jaunts and bikes. And how will folks be able to see my crazy smile if I hide under a helmet. Honestly, the thrill of exposure you get to elements in an Atom is so pure, I don't want it shielded. I could buy plenty different cars if I wanted to be "protected".

What's your camera setup between the seats facing forward? How is it mounted so that it doesn't fly off when you have fun?! :)
I use a GoPro suction mount such on metal surface between the two seats just below the hood. Very dependable and the air flow is such the the camera and setup is not subjected to much turbulence.
I've been looking at these, are they really as unreliable as people say? I've got a fiat 500 abarth and people say that's the worst reliability ever but mine has been perfect for the most part. Thanks!
Maserati ownership is going to cost much more than a fiat 500 of any kind. Even if nothing goes wrong for a while. Cars from 2007 onwards are much more reliable if cared for with proper servicing and maintenance.

How piercing is the wastegate sound?
It's not piercing like the supercharger whine on the older model. But it's loud. 100 dB plus😁

Whatever hits me will only improve my facial landscape 😁. I wear a helmet for longer motorway runs. And goggles for every wherever else. The airflow is so good that any object coming my way will need to be very heavy and aerodynamic to reach my face. But you do get lots of normal dust and stuff which is I just consider as free face exfoliation 😂

For great vtec sound please look for Honda nsx or integral dc2 videos. Atom 4 is turbo charged. You will get very loud booms and hisses.

You can put a nut/ bolt behind the quick release mechanism so that no one can take the steering wheel off. Instead of carrying it with you every time you leave the car.
It's OK. The Atom doesn't go out much and I don't mind carrying the steering in backpack. Sometimes you have to carry the helmet. However in most cases the car is not left alone for long and is mostly in view.

Do you manage the throttle when changing gears, since this gearbox is a bit harsh for smooth driving
I have got FD DBW module for faster gear changes which keeps gear change times reasonable acceptable. I tend to lift slightly at town speeds which makes gear changes feel like a normal manual. At speeds (motorway and beyond), there is no need to lift. It is absolutely spot on and quick. To me it defines the character of a sports car which an automatic ZF box cannot replicate.
Then this module is an aftermarket option? This makes me feel a bit calmer about the bad hype. You really need to appreciate the car to fully understand it´s character and purpose with the gearbox. I would love to own one of these one day in my life, the beautifully sculpted shapes and proportions combined with wide tires gives it an exotic stance to the road that I just adore. Probably my favourite part about the cars styling is the rear headlights from the 2004 iteration, they have an classic look and appears a bit sinister. Also an optional Larini exhaust system with valve openers would be perfect! This would be the car I wished Tony owned in The Sopranos series, probably would make him a bit cliché and not so low key though haha. How are the running costs for it? Do you take it to service and is it expensive?
Yes, its an aftermarket option. Link: www.formuladynamics.com/products/qp_dbwem/qp_dbwem.php . Regular average running costs if nothing goes wrong (and it will) is about £2000 per year for service / insurance / tyres. Service at a specialist independent annually is about £ 1000 - £ 1300 . Clutch is major expense but needs doing eventually and is about £ 2k including labour. Brakes are cheaper than other later models at around £ 1k for all corners.

Well, I have just had a crisis!!!!! I think, looking at the prices and availability, it's going to be a DuoSelect cat for me :).
Duo-Select is more driver focused. Its faster, has more character and better sounder, specially between gear changes and downshifts. A good example will cost similar to maintain as the ZF boxed cars. If you live and drive in a town or city, it is not the smoothest option but fun when you master it.
I think that's what is attracting me to one, also the prices seem a lot lower, I have set a target of £15,000...which I hope shall be enough. There are a number around at that price, with recent clutch and flywheel replacements.....
Also it's there complete Ferrari 4 that's never been. Even though it has the same transaxle as the Gallardo it carries the same with balance as Ferrari's front engine Gran Tourer's the same era 612 Scaglietti is also 47/53 f/r and this wad no accident as it shares many chassis components with the 612. Ferrari owned Maserati when they penned car so it was their designers and engineers who's input went into it. The entire car... the chassis, the engine, the body (Pininfarina) were built by Ferrari then shipped to the Maserati factory where they put it all together and added there interior. The Mark V Quattroporte was Ferrari's idea of what a 4 door Grantourer should be. But this didn't gel with Journalist and owners trading in their S Class Mercedes so they decided to soften it up with the automatic but they were slower.. much slower. So, they changed the configuration from the glorious 4.2L to the not so much 4.7L but the 4.2's are still quicker. I used to think Ferrari should have given it a V12 but 612's although more powerful actually doesn't sound as good. Get them while they're cheap because once collectors start figuring this out and realising how much of a steal these are they'll start scooping them up and they will quadruple in price. It's one of the cheapest "Ferrari" you can get on the market and its almost bullet proof. I've had very few problem with mine. Much less than with my B6 Audi S4 I had before it. Hi There, due to the low mileage and summer only use, I subject my 'classics' too, I am considering a Duo-Select car......apart from semi regular clutch changes, are the transaxles themselves, fairly tough?
Hi, My car is one of the earliest and is mechanically very sound. It has had no issues with transaxle and the clutch has been replaced once at about 45k miles. It is now nearing 75k and is about 85% worn. The key is to buy the best example you can afford regardless of mileage. I chose mine on condition, full immaculate history, FDFBW (for faster gear changes) and of course the Larini system. :) As I have suggested before, please head over to sportsmaserati.com and you will receive very useful info and the possible chance to buy a member's well cared for example. Hope this helps.
Thanks for replying.......I am in the process of saving, and the £15,000 target I have set myself, will probably only get a Duo-Select car, albeit with full history. My current classic (which will probably stay alongside, a 1987 Jaguar XJ6 3.6) only gets used during the summer, on dry days only.....so the Maserati would probably be consigned to a similar, fair weather fate :). I tend to carry out all my own servicing and repairs, so would look for a FMSH, or at least a respected specialist. I did toy with the idea of buying a QP IV Evoluzionne, a few years back.....but, I think the QP V is a far better built, more reliable car.....and that opinion seems to hold, given the number of people I have asked. Funnily enough, it would be the earlier car I'd be looking at, mainly because that's the car I fell in love with, all the way back in 2004!.
