I worked at the palace for 17yrs in the 2000s. I remember Helping put out tables for Bob Geldof's gig. It wasnt a sell out and the reason seemed to be that people thought it was a tribute gig. I remember Bob taking the stage and quipping "Hello, we are the Bob Geldof Tribute band." It was a great gig non the less. I saw Rick Wakeman there on my 20th birthday and I still have my backstage pass for Ocean Colour Scene (by heck the left a mess in the dressing room!). I loved that place...one of the best places to work ever.

Great set of memories for you lads.... unfortunately, my era was the 15-20 years or so just before that, having been there when Jock Whiteside set up the original studio. Clark Sorley, Spike and George Cowan turned it into Sirocco around 1972 and it started to function as a hub for all the local bands. Clark still has a studio in Kilmarnock producing work for people as far away as New Zealand and Spain. I put together the compilation sets of albums called KIKROCK followed by four OVERTONE albums between about 1982 and 1986, , with each album containing 2 tracks by 8 different bands featuring several well-known local names like So What, Menace (preceded by Play Dirty), 22nd Story, Overland Stage Company, Geisha Boyz, and a few others... 40 bands in all came to the studio from all over Scotland and recorded each track in 2 hours... a superb feat to complete 5 albums in total that were co-produced by myself, Clark Sorley, Spike Bayne and Larry Primrose. We managed to get coast-to-coast airplay in USA and Canada, and some record company interest for a few of them along the way, with Billy Law (Popper) and myself even touring round the labels in London on one occasion. My office was up in the corner of that building above what is now the Kebab shop. There's probably a book in there that can be written one day, but maybe not while everyone is still alive. All the best lads, and I hope you are still enjoying your music.

i was Living in Glasgow in the 80s & I was Singing lead vocal in a band called 'Ariel Technique' most of the guys in the band were from Kilmarnock the Bass Player was Ken Tudhope . we rehearsed in Scirroco quite a bit, we also recorded with Larry Primrose as engineer & Clark Sorley . Larry Played Drums on a song we did Called 'Did It' & it was Played by Mark Goodier who was then a DJ on Radio Clyde. i eventually started to write Solo Material R&B Funk/Gospel ect... When Living in Glasgow I was Introduced to Alan Rankine by a friend Alan was part of the 80s band ''the Associates'' along side scottish singer Singer Billy MacKenzie both of them now sadly passed on ......... when i met Alan Rankine in Glasgow he liked my Voice & asked me where i was recording ,i mentioned i was recording a couple of songs for EMI at that time in Kilmarnock, Clark was working with me on one of the songs .... So Alan & I both drove to Kilmarnock from Glasgow & I introduced Alan to Frank Reader sister of Eddi. Frank who was also working with the Trashcans at that time & looking to get signed & Alan was instrumental in the Signing of the band to Go Discs...........

Thanks for this. Shame it took me so long to find it. Made me happy and sad in almost equal measure. Places and people I hadn't brought to mind for too long. But also stuff I missed by getting caught by London so early. Moved there wae the Fearties and never came back. Still there was loads tae recall. The Sirocco and the Primrose brothers, the McClusky brothers, Sharing a hoose wae Mike Ogiltree and Wendy Murray. The KPT, the KLAW at the old Jimmy and the Sandriane. I'd forgotten about that one, and the Gateway. The Fearties at the Gateway comes tae mind if I really try hard. Like y' say yirselves, lots of it is hazy for various reasons. Anyway, ta again. It's good tae remember what a fertile place it was. Here's hopin' it's no such a desert for much longer. Spike

I thoroughly enjoyed this guys. I am a Kilmarnock born Scot living in Canada and a life long musician (with Canadian Awards in music). I took my daughter to Scotland in 1988 to introduce her to her roots. We spent time in Kilmarnock but not enough time to dig into the underground. This was an amazing journey. Thank you both so, so much!!!
