BOATERLAND and a LOVE STORY - [Part III] / Yggdra Sailing Sweden
We arrived to the mysterious gathering without any expectations. This was the Covid summer of 2020 but everything going on in the society outside of the circle we created faded out of our minds.
A great friend was made and the potential of re-igniting the spark from a lost relationship was properly assessed. An emotional chapter.
Big ships and a glimpse of Antarctica, some good sailing and Shippa the ship´s dog takes of the fight with a dying mackerell. Are among the things you will find in this final chapter of the Yggdra 2020 story.

Johan Bernekorn - A life at Sea. Presentation on Allt För Sjön 2023, Stockholm

A year ago I was on stage to talk about my career as a seaman. Sharing some trade secrets from various exotic parts of the globe. Also about my sailing project with Yggdra. At the time when this was filmed, Yggdra was still in Sweden. Now she is on Grenada, in the Caribbean. This video is for you who want to know a bit more about the path that led up to the adventure, that has now begun.

The reason that our destinations are so sparsely populated is most often a result of their inhabitable nature. Nice to see this very personal video! Boaterland is an interesting concept, I also know Henrik here from Göteborg and Götheborg. And the love story was beautiful, hope you find another partner in your incredible life journey! See you in Rostock soon? Heard rumours that you will go there….

I think this may be my favorite episode yet. I am amazed that ships, the size of Yggdra (or larger), can fit through some of the in-land waterways you traversed. Seeing you pass by other boats that were sharing the same space had me, at least, holding my breath a bit 😅 hoping you would not bump into one another. Were you nervous at all? Do maneuvers like that require a lot of skill? I was also curious to know how you move Yggdra forward without a sail/wind. Does she have a motor that provides the power you need for forward movement? The "7-step-stairway", was also incredible! I can't believe Soldiers built that work of art with shovels alone...and it was so neat that you were able to meet the sail maker! It was rewarding seeing Yggdra with 4 sails; she looks majestic with them! Thanks for taking us along on your journeys and for providing so much educational information - the videos are always a pleasure to watch.

      Miss Wella! Thanks for the thorough reply and the positive energy. I am honored that you find it interesting! Yes we passed the catamaran just after squeezing through the bottleneck in the preceding scene. Their margins must have been very slim. Thankfully Yggdra only draw 2 meters (six foot eight) but our limiting factor was the depth. In the middle it is 2,8 meters and the seabed has a slope of 30 degrees. The canal surely offers good training in maneuvering but the whole crew got the knack of it quickly and partly it felt like we drove on tracks. All the locks tunes the comfort around mooring as well but it was nice to have a few extra hands on deck. She has a large engine and a tank capacity to motor across the Atlantic! Despite that the canal experience was good fun, it was a blessing to be out on the West Coast and hoisting sails for real. Take care!

    Nicely done, Johan. It is beautiful watching Yggdra cut through the waves and high seas, she makes it all look very effortless; it's surprisingly calming to watch. Shippa is adorable and I'm curious to know what it's like to travel with a dog over such large distances. The logistics of having an animal on board a ship seem potentially complicated, but it's awesome that you and your crew make it work. Finally, the details you added about tying down the ship correctly as well as all the things you have to take into consideration when sailing, were an awesome addition to your video. It really enhances the viewing experience for all of us. The videos are both fun to watch but also very educational. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. I'm looking forward to the next video already!

      Hi Marie! Yes. Looking at how she moves it looks so easy. In that kind of weather it still feels that you are out at sea. The sounds of the wind in the rig and of the water flowing past the hull. Of items banging around in lockers. Especially as this was the first sail for almost a year, there were a few items that starts moving that we you have forgotten to secure. Seasickness kicks in for some and the attention that the sail handling and navigation requires, combined with some nervousness, makes it a tiring but stimulating experience. It feels very good to finally arrive. Especially for Shippa. Having a dog on board makes all the difference. Shippa spent her first 2 years on a cargo ship where I worked. The breed, Schipperke, can´t get seasick and they are bred for being on boats. That makes it a lot easier. Like you see, we still need to give her a fair share of attention, at least on this first leg of the journey. Im´m glad you liked the mooring animations. My favourite hobby is to tie her down on some new rocks like this. I will keep that aspect for future projects. Thanks for your fine feedback! It gives me extra motivation to get going with the next video! Take care!

    What a great continuation of the first episode. I am in awe that Ernest Shackleton and his crew survived that journey in such a small boat (plus that arduous hike at the end). It's mind-blowing. I also can't believe the high seas you experienced....70knots? I fly my plane at that speed at slow flight! Is that common? And I had no idea you could bring a large ship like that so close to shore - I just assumed it would get stuck 🤷🏻‍♀️.Thank you for sharing your adventures with the world - the cinematography and story-telling are wonderful. PS: I am glad the whaling station is no longer active. The thought of 25 dead whales a day made me really sad 🙁

    • @yggdrasail
      @yggdrasail 4 года назад

      I agree, one of the most remarkable stories of survival without doubt. The rapid weather changes on South Georgia is what makes it all so challenging. The location in the South Atlantic is generally very windy, from the southwest. The wind finds its way through the valleys with a funnelling effect. The katabatic winds are also very present and a result of air cooling down above the glaciers. Becoming more heavy, it falls down the slopes at extreme speeds. There is rarely any constant wind but most often you just see the surface being whipped up to foam close to the shore. If this happens during zodiac operations you will have to act quickly. These winds rarely develop any extreme seas though as its mostly offshore or only blowing for a short duration of time. It gives me a lot of motivation to hear that you enjoyed the video, thank you!
