Numskull Space Invaders Quarter Arcade Review
In this video, I take a close look at Numskull's take on Taito's Space Invaders cabinet. Does this pint sized reproduction arcade cabinet faithfully replicate the arcade experience? (spoiler - it does, and then some!)

    This video shows exactly why Atari failed. The execs weren't gamers, didn't listen to the programmers and thought they could spend their way into success without a clear idea of who they were selling to. I'm glad Atari CoinOp.. the true Atari survived the market crash. The other spun off Atari console and computer division run by the Tramiel's thought low cost was the only driving factor in success. They to didn't understand what it took to succeed and failed lacking the innovation that made 400/800 computers successful, then carrying that into the future. I can't believe the Atari name is now owned by the French. What the heck. One of the most recognized American brands still... is owned by a foreign company. Oh how far we have fallen!

    With the saucer count being 22 and then every 15th after that, the first 300 points is actually available after the 8th shot, and then every 15th after that. It's just that it can be difficult to clear enough invaders after only 8 shots to hit the saucer, so mostly people go to 22 shots the first time. Saw that in a 'how to' space invaders magazine from years ago.

    I'd like to think that all "beginner" MC players do the same thing: press a button and WATCH your missile hit the incoming missile. That was the HUGE thing that MC taught me! Is that how you *really* play is launch your missile... and just move on. You don't get see it fly, you don't wait for the impact. You just have to KNOW that it's going to hit ... and not care. Once I started my professional career, I always laughed internally about how that ended up being my approach to so many work-related problems was to make sure I assigned the right people and just... let them go. They'll solve that problem, move on to the next thing. Even in other video games, there is a tendency to want to want to WATCH the effect of what you're doing, and it's always your downfall. You have to learn to "solve the problem" (whatever it is) ... and just move on. MC was a super fun game in the pantheon of early video games, but it ended up being a great learning tool for me. :^)

    • @arcadeblogger
      @arcadeblogger 5 месяцев назад

      Nice analogy, and you are absolutely right. You need to develop a sixth sense and have the confidence to know that your accuracy is on point, so that you can 'fire and forget' and move onto the next thing. Thinking two shots ahead is a useful skill too. Being at one with the weight and feel of the trackball is key to all this.

    • @TheNudeBrewer
      @TheNudeBrewer 5 месяцев назад

      @@arcadeblogger Yeah, as a pro, I'm sure you can appreciate that first moment in truly "learning" MC when you first learn that "first spray" of 3-5 missles in the intro are spaced JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT so the explosions catch the entire first wave-- even if they branch off into 20 other missiles. The "explosion cloud" simply catches everything, and if you space it right, you barely need to shoot to catch them all. I think getting to your level of MC is being able to negate the waves of missiles with only 10-12 shots, and saving the remaining ones for smart bombs. But that's from a guy that brags about getting 300-500k. lol

    • @ThorKCade
      @ThorKCade 5 месяцев назад

      Sadly, no. Based at least partially on polling, Numskull has basically decided to only include features that were on the original machine-so no HDMI out. The one exception is the TMNT 4 player cabinets that have USB ports to make it more realistic to crowd 4 people around a 18” tall cabinet. That said, the size and level of detail on these makes them extremely playable-it really “feels” like playing on a real machine surprisingly well. I don’t have space or money enough to collect all of the Quarter Arcades, but I absolutely love the few that I have.

    The blisters i had playing this game, whether in the arcade or on consoles, but international track and field on the playstation, the technique we used to win was great, but the blusters were so painful, like a cross between paper cuts and third degree burns. I remember you could rell whi had been playing it over the weekend because they would have fingers with the top 2 sections either blistered up or bandaged. Ivehad a leg amoutated whilst being awake, and going tgrough having those blisters was more painful. They would be sore for over a week, in agony the whole time. What was the first thing you would do when they healed? Fire up IT&F on the playstation again. Gluttons for punishment.

    I remember being in the back of a really nice cafe back in 1980 with Galaxia (the rip off of Galaxians), Battlezone and Asteroids along with Space Invaders pinball and they wheeled in Missile Command.... hearing those sounds and that "The End" screen was quite something to an 11 year old. I have no idea how you or anyone can get so good at this game... I was always an observer on most games... the only game I got any good at was Bank Panic as I could get to 250,000 -300,000 on that on a good day...

    Wow....I don't know when this was filmed, but it was definitely before my time. My experience with Atari didn't happen until 1994 with the Jaguar (other than arcade cabs). I started playing in 1986 on the Nes and Sega Master System. I feel in love with gaming, and I have never stopped. Addendum - Today, we (fiancee and I) have every console from the test launch of the Atari 7800 in 1984 through the Xbox Series X, PS5, Switch, Steam Deck. My favorite generation was the 5th.
