Follow-up on Grapevines Defoliated by Japanese Beetle

Last fall we showed some grapevines that were defoliated by Japanese beetle. The lack of foliage prevented the fruit from accumulating sugar. The canes on those vines also died back to the basal buds, or back to the cordon. We don't need 100% control of pests like Japanese beetle, but near complete defoliation can cause negative consequences in the year of damage and the following year as well.

Flexible plastic chain (also know as agties, ag ties, ag tyes, etc.) can be an effective long-term way to attach plants to trellis wires. These can be installed in 2 ways. By installing the tail through the first loop of the lead, it allows you to more easily expand the ties as the plants grow.
