A rare recording of W.C. Fields late in life appearing with a young Frank Sinatra on "The Frank Sinatra Show" on CBS radio 2-9-1944. Also featured is comedian Bert Wheeler. Sponsored by Vimms Vitamins.
Fanny Brice -- on Television 1950
Просмотров 86 тыс.10 лет назад
Fanny Brice's only appearance on television. June 12, 1950 on CBS-TV's "Popsicle Parade Of Stars", as Baby Snooks. Also appearing Hanley Stafford as "Daddy".
Oy. I'm terribly sorry, but this is abominable.
The radio show did not transition well into television. People's imagination of of how Baby Snooks should appear didn't match with an adult woman trying to act like a little girl.
Funny Girl obviously wasn’t Fanny Brice, come on. Apples and Oranges.
Brice's Baby Snooks show ran on radio from 1937 til her death in 1951.
Using an innocent family channel to talk about evolution is horrible! As if man kind actually came from “apes”, smh.. We were made in Gods image, not some animals. What’s sad is the character playing the “father” doesn’t even try to give baby snooks the correct answer but just says he doesn’t care what the answer is (some good father!). I feel bad for all of those kids in the past watching and being shown and taught that garbage.. As for the show, I understand the humor of the time and why this would appeal to them in the past but she’s too tall. She’s as tall as her father, it just looks like a grown woman (obviously) pretending to be a baby not an actual toddler the way her character is trying to portray. I get for radio this might work because they only hear her voice, but not as a show. Maybe have her in a baby carriage or something so she is not taller than the man. I’ll admit she’s pretty good at playing a toddler but seeing it is just weird. She looks more like a grandmother then a baby! Like an old, outspoken, crotchety old woman. That might have been better to portray. I’m glad I got to see her though (to see her acting skills). You can tell she worked hard to try and make this work.
Creepy as hell.
"I went to Philadelphia in 2020 and it was closed...then found out it was the Pandemic"🤣😂😷
RIP Fanny Brice. Fanny died of a cerebral hemmorage in May 1951 at age 59. Too bad they didn't provide cast credits. Fanny Brice as Baby Snooks is obvious. Announcer Bob LeMond is credited at the end; he's likely to be the Popsicle salesman too. In radio Daddy was played by Hanley Stafford.
Funny Girl 1968 and the 1975 sequel Funny Lady bore no resemblance to the life of Fanny Brice and her true story. That's the film I'd like to see.
Snooks baby, You're a... baby! Never grow up.
All though her character was annoying, I have to give Ms Brice a thumbs up for having ALOT of "noive!"
I'm sorry to disappoint you..Mr.Sinatra..but..Mr.Fields doesn't make me laugh..he makes me angry.
This is a treat of watching radio stars on early Television programs. Radio was still listened to by the majority of people in the early 1950s but Television was a new medium for people to enjoy. Radio stars such as Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Red Skelton were able to conquer the new medium but sadly people such as Fred Allen and Fanny Brice didn't succeed. Well at least we have this video that shows how Radio stars looked. Fanny Brice was very funny but she looked too old acting as a little girl. Hey, she was a brilliant comedian , I really enjoyed the old time radio Baby Snooks show. Please listen to it and use your imagination as Fanny Brice plays a mischievous little girl.
I would've loved to have seen her appear opposite Lucille Ball on " I Love Lucy! "
Love it..... life was so much simpler then..... my dad was the organist for many local shows during the 50s and early 60s before his Time For Uncle Paul Show......
Ugh. The snooks character is moronic and annoying. Seeing a middle aged woman play a toddler just doesn't work. It's a one note act. And if you think Brice was a great singer, actuality listen to her on youtube. She wasn't.
UTUBE COME RAIN OR COME SHINE BY JOHN BAVAS
Incidentally, this script was adapted from the one Phil Rapp wrote for Fanny and Hanley on radio's "GOOD NEWS OF 1939" [October 20, 1938].
a great old recording. thanks for posting.
Surely I'm not the only one that can see Fanny Brice's influence on Jerry Lewis ?
DDLG?
Fanny Brice was a famous and beloved entertainer. But this is cringeworthy.
Fanny did this show as a one-shot experiment to see if Baby Snooks would work on TV. Reportedly, she was not happy with the result, so she stayed on radio with the character. It is a shame that she didn't go on The Ed Sullivan Show as herself singing "Second Hand Rose" and "My Man".
I don't think it's all that bad, really. TV was just getting started, so, yeah, it's not quite the quality it would soon be. If Fanny was unhappy about the result and had lived longer, 14 years more, she would have seen she had paved the way for funny ladies such as Carol Burnett (who probably would have had her on her show). I'm also sure that Ed Sullivan would have had her on his show as well ... MANY times. Fanny was LEGEND.
Frank Sinatra and W.C. Fields . That's almost as strange as Frank Sinatra and Groucho Marx.
Groucho and Sinatra worked together in the movie "Double Dynamite" (1951) and both were still active for many years until Groucho's death in 1977. The thing about Sinatra and Fields is that Sinatra was just getting started as a major star in 1944, while Fields was ending his career and would die only two years later.
"who is this knob-headed gargoyle?"
Wow thank you for posting. I love this.
As a parent i can imagine my grandparents thinking “crap, now i have to endure high pitched whistling all damn day. Perfect” lol
I just saw 'Funny Girl' for the first time and had to check out some Fanny Brice videos...thanks for posting!!
Really great.
Cool...never heard this. And Bert Wheeler, to boot.
She was hilarious!
Fanny Brice had talent and style. She could sing ballads or act comedy rings around any child. I'm crazy about this lady. She died so young, Thank you for making it possible to watch her only performance on TV, Yery close tp I Love Lucy. Personally I think Fanny would have it over Lucy...
"Around any child"? That's not saying much is it? Are you referring to when she was a child or when she was acting like a child while playing Snooks? LoL.
Omg... that’s exactly how I thought daddy would look! Thanks for posting this. I’ve listened to OTR for years and never knew this existed. Dude could’ve helped daddy out by saying the rabbit WASNT for sale.. lol
Popsicle is “ wholesome”!!! Yeah ok:)
Hi
"Daddy" looks younger than "Baby Snooks"!
He was by about eight years.
Betty Boop brought me here.
Ironic is that while Funny Girl catapulted Barbra into super stardom. It was Barbra that made people remember Fanny Brice as a Star.
She must have been good in vaudeville, but on TV or the movie screen that woman is grotesque.
Give it a rest you nasty little troll !
I disagree.
I don't think it's grotesque so much as it is a little weird seeing a woman almost 60 playing a little girl. You've got to admit though, she does a good job at it!
This Commercial is SO interesting and funny 😂 I didn’t know they had Popsicle way back then! Also I only heard of Fanny Brice from the new movie “Can You Ever Forgive Me” 😊
The humor of this period is really painfully bad. Ouch. Fanny Brice is just annoying.
And you are truly annoying in your ignorance
You haven’t been on TikTok have you? That’s cringy and annoying.
Ok Fanny Brice is a nice woman who died young man people are annoying even I’m annoying sometimes but you should not say this kind of stuff like if I did this to you when you were dead you would not like it the lesson you have learned is to treat people the way you want to be treated
Shivering prolapsed rectum, she was ugly
lolita
Whatever happened tp all those slidatone rings? This show looks like a 50s infomercial.
This was before the Korean War.
She's grotesque.
Yes. She was hilarious! She was also a very beautiful woman. She didn't get into Ziegfeld Follies for being a homely hag.
youre grotesque
Anything you have to say can wait until you're smarter.
I THANK GOD THAT RECORDINGS OF ALL KINDS WERE SO MUCH BETTER THAN IN THE 20'S JUST AWFUL ITS A SHAME FOR THE GOOD SINGERS ETC. FANNY HAD A LOVELY VOICE GRACEN COMEDY AND STYLE WHEN SHE WANTED IT
Many wont recognize or know of BABY SNOOKS fanny brice
Truly the Golden Age of television. Sad what's become of today's TV -- most of it utter garbage and commercials ad nauseum! Remember when shows had one sponsor and more show than commercial?
Why was this her only TV appearance? I loved Fanny Brice!
She died in 1951, just as TV was taking off.
I read that it was her only tv appearance because she didn't like the way she came off on tv.
I don’t think it was. There’s a video of her and Judy Garland doing a scene too
@@nater6790 That was in a movie. This is her only tv appearance. I have an original publicity photo from that tv appearance.
@@circusbrains Looks like Video Killed the Radio Star, indeed.
A soda jerk.
What a rare treat. Thanks for posting. And yes, we DID sing along, and yes, I DID redeem popsicle wrappers for gifts!
