Hello everyone, and welcome to the channel! Here I highlight and share my experience diving head-first into the custom mechanical keyboard hobby. I've always really enjoyed keyboards. I still remember how in love I fell when one of my high school friends got a Razer Blackwidow, but the world of customs has been an amazing hobby to discover, learn, and explore. I'm very excited to share what I've learned and created as well as to see what I can learn and accomplish next!

I Taught Her How To Build a Keyboard (and Gave it to Her!)
The Zoom65 has been probably the most highly requested keyboard on the channel, and I finally got my hands on it! Instead of building it for myself, however... This time I'm giving the gift of a custom mechanical keyboard! The catch? She has to build it herself!

Keychron Q1 // Boba U4T - My First Tactile Switch
I just got one to play around with as the Max kit is only $80 on Amazon right now; thanks so much for the video! The ABS caps and the switches have to go imo, but I appreciate seeing/hearing about what to do inside. I might even get Cerakey ceramic keycaps but have no clue what to get for the switches.
Fancy Alice 66 link?
You got it for free, you might felt it was not a big deal to put tape on the whole PCB. I purchased mine with the displaypad = almost 500$ (+ my Kailh navy blues). The detachable numpad is unreliable when not connected via the USB-C cable (the physical connection is garbage, you can't lift the keyboard without folding in 2 parts) The usb cable provided is extremely thick too but you can change it. Software will seem cool unless you already used Steel Series GG engine.
Omg dude the complete Max version is $80 on Amazon right now 😬
@IndecisiveStoner oh that must be because my currency is rupees, so sorry
@@Rob_Mike_LitterstOhh phew, glad to hear it what a relief! I felt terrible for you as it says your comment is a month old so probably too late to return. 😅 How do you like those navy blues on it? I also like heavy switches.
I know this is a really old video, but if I got the keyboard and did this mod, do you reckon I would be okay just installing pre-lubed switches with the tape mod for a good "thocc"? I've been wanting to upgrade my keyboard experience to something more satisfying, but a lot of the custom keyboards I hear about from the enthusiast community really just aren't my style. On the other hand, the Mountain to me fits that really slick aesthetic while still having modding capabilities, and is on sale so a plus ofc lol
Nowadays prelubed switches can sound fantastic! I've yet to really hear one that sounds AS good as hand lubed switches, but they will more than suffice imo. The beautiful thing about the entire hobby is that it's up to you to make the keyboard exactly how you like it
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857 Sweet, I think I'll try undertaking this project sometime then. Fingers crossed I don't break one of those circuits lol
@@banditveteran You got this, bub! Slow and steady
instead of lubing all those switches, couldnt i just swap em out for prelubed?
nowadays, yeah. Back when I did this all the prelubed options sucked lmao
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857 okay, just realized this video is 2 years old lol. Just picked one up, looking to customize it.
Video is simple, short, and to the point. Thank you
Thanks! this is probably the best one I uploaded, honestly.
Sound like akko cream yellow pro
Hi! This is such a great video! I was wondering if you knew about the Akko Matcha Green V3’s having interference with cherry profile! Thanks!
I really like that keyboard layout, but honestly really do not like the look of the badge on any of the Ikki68's I've seen.
Pe foam or tape mod?
Getting used to it was almost instant for me. Also, the UK ISO version had plate foam besides the tape mod.
Rip
ktt rose vs ktt strawberry? Does ktt strawberry worth the price over ktt rose, at where I am living, strawberry is 2x price over rose.
Great vid!
You all have way too much time on your hands if this is your concern..seriously.
So what? Lmao. R u saying u want us to have 3 jobs or something? Just cus we have a lot of free time? 😂 Go get a real life bro. our payhecks are more enough to support our needs and hobbies. And the right job too since we’re able to take a break unliek u, wanting to have 10 jobs or something, being unable to take a break.
nice keyboard
What's wrong with this abomination is that they went through the effort to split and tilt the two sides for ergonomics, but then they staggered the left side in the wrong direction. The rows are staggered correctly for the right hand, but wrong for the left. Meaning they shouldn't have bothered to split it in the first place, because typing on it is now really awkward unless you are some kind of "hunchback from notre dame".
keycaps on the red keyboard?
North face IS still an issue but it is complicated. Switches using more modern mouldings might have been tweaked to minimise the issue and also more modern caps have been slightly tweaked to solve. The issue is that you are not always sure the switch/cap combo you have will work fine until you try. By the time you find out you have already dropped the cash so it is too late. So it is still best to err on not using cherry North unless you KNOW that combo is not an issue for your parts or you have money to burn :)
Well sure if you don't want or need backlit keycaps! But if you do, north facing is the only way to go hence all the 'gamer keyboards' with excellent backlit legends on the keycaps. As it happens most of the keycaps we see with double shot shinethrough legends on the top surface of the keycaps are OEM profile anyways so there isn't any interference problem to begin with if you skip Cherry profile keycaps. Personally I'm delighted to see Gateron etc. using modern moulds that largely delete the problem as shown in this video. A good move by the industry.
@@kesamek8537 Strange comment as is off at a tangent on what I said really. It is well known if you want shine through then North is it and OEM caps were created because Cherry interferance. My whole post was related to the fact that while Cherry and North face is less of an issue you just do not know unless you try a combinations. Your wording also agrees in that you admit the problem is largely solved but not fully solved. I can show you cherry caps that will interfere with new Gat switches and I can show you ones that do not. I said nothing about shine through, that is a TOTALLY different thing to if Cherry and North face interfere and a totally unrelated subject
Great video brother, i'm thinking of doing this mod but i'm not sure if I should take the foam out like you did, does it make that much of a difference?
Thank you! I always recommend testing out multiple configurations to find a sound that you really like, but when it comes to the GMMK Pro I really think the case foam makes for an overall worse sound and feel for the entire thing. The plate foam is a much more personal choice. Personally, I tend to not like it much on deeper builds.
Rip!
hope you'll make a comeback soon!
How did you manage to fit films on kailh style housings?
I barely managed, and it wasn't worth the effort 😂
Do you think tx thin films will work?
@@dan3thegoat I honestly think you should probably skip filming them. It really didn't make them sound much better looking back at it, and it was a giant pain. I've broken several switches trying to remove them from the keyboard. They're phenomenal switches with just a lube application.
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857 thank you!
That xxl mousepad looks so cool. Where'd you find it?
It was actually an old group buy from mekibo so it'll unfortunately be difficult to find
Hi, very good video, do you recommend this Epomaker EP75 or the TH80 Pro? Thanks
Yo, that edit was amazing
damn we basic af we have the same exact keyboard(s) and I have the desk mat too
I bought a keyboard and there are KTT Pink. I looked for a review on them, but did not find it, tell me KTT Pink This KTT Rose?
I can't find anything called a KTT pink either. Your switches are most likely KTT Roses or KTT Strawberry!
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857Found them, it turns out KTT Pink This KTT Rose. Keyboard: Zone 51 Adamant TKL
For folks going 50% screw tightness, I'd recommend using Loctite 222 threadlocker. This will help retain the torsion applied to the screws
Did the tape mod to help with the acoustics, will likely redo the foam as I'm still getting a very noticeable case ping sound. Thanks for the video, it's great inspiration for mods to an already great board IMO.
Thanks! The tape mod helped make the board sound a lot more custom imo. You could 100% skip it if you don't like the sound of tape mod, but I'm very happy that I did it
Can I put it on south facing switch to a north facing keyboard?
SURJOHNNN
Got this one with yellow gaterons, are budgerigar better?
Hi!! Just a quick question, I believe the EP75 has a north-facing PCB, right? Does it have any interference with cherry profile keycaps when you did the second sound test? I'm still debating whether to get the barebones of the TH80 or the fully built EP75 and mod it to my liking. Hoping to get an answer to this question. Love the review btw.
First, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! To answer your question, yes you'll get interference with cherry profile keycaps if you use switches with standard pole lengths or switches without modified top housings. The flamingo switches they sent with this board were had longer poles and avoided the interference. There are a lot of really great long pole switches out there if you were wanting to replace the switches. A quick search on RUclips/Google should give you plenty of results! There are also certain switches such as the Gateron Oil Kings and the newer Gateron Pro Yellows that have modified top housings to remove the interference as well!
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857 thanks for the reply! I was thinking to get the Epomaker Wisteria Switches, and the reviews I’ve seen on RUclips says that they have a long pole but I’ve only seen them using it on a south-facing PCB. That’s why I’m really unsure as the EP75 is a great looking board.
Hi sir may I ask how did you clean the factory lube from your stabs? Did you just wipe it of. Also did you apply just lube on the switches or did you clean them first?
I just used some paper towels to clean off most of the factory lube from the stabs. I don't worry too much about making them perfectly clean, and having a bit left over hasn't given me any problems so far. These switches came completely dry so I just applied lube as I normally would, but I don't usually clean factory lubed switches before I lube them unless there's a LOT in there. Just going over the factory lube with mine has worked well for me in the past!
The software is actually fantastic. There are MANY extra macro and RGB control functions that are not bound by default for some insane reason, it adds a lot of extra features to the board that they could have advertised.... The ability to shift toggle AND hard toggle through 3 fully customizable layers (Base + FN + FN1). 2 custom RGB presets that you can reprogram on the fly without software just by tapping each key to cycle through the rainbow. It has keyboard lock with LED indicator so you can do typing tests without pressing all sorts of random buttons on your system. You can add a second color behind almost all of the RGB animations on BOTH the main keys and the side light independently (blue sparkles over red background, rainbow lines over cyan background, etc) all without software after binding the various commands for it into the FN layer. The macro and key combo binding support in general is great. It doesn't have as many layers and tap commands like real QMK has, but for most people it will do the job even for somewhat complex setups. I got the budgerigar switch version and they're amazing, but not for everyone as they are VERY tactile and have quite heavy springs. Great for gaming IMO because the heavy springs force you back up above the bump to reset so quickly and you can feel every input, but it's a little strenuous for typing, but very precise so you can be very aware of mistakes, and very loud. TTC Bluish Whites are essentially identical in feel but with a silent top and bottom making them insanely quiet despite being super tactile. I love the board overall, it looks great minus the printed on text for the status lights that I have the urge to scrub off... I'm not sure about the sound though, I tried tape mod it made the loud switches INSANELY loud and poppey, like playing back the iphone keyboard sounds through a speaker, it was way too distracting. In general the board tends to rumble a bit particularly from the space bar, and the bottom out feel and sound is so firm, I wish it had a softer plate and softer mounting. The mount isn't screw in at all, the plate just rests flat on top of the pegs in the bottom case, and it would be possible to maybe put something on top of those pegs or remove them entirely, if not for the top half of the case which needs pretty exact alignment to fit well against the plate, and also the USB C port is directly on the PCB so if it were to move at all in the case it would likely break (you'd have to drill out a big hole in the back in all 3 layers of the case to avoid that and give it room to move). Also I did notice an usually low polling rate over USB C, lower than bluetooth/2.4ghz which is the opposite of what is normally expected, AND lower than even some $20 hotswap boards I have. It's not unusably slow, I've been able to game fine with it and it doesn't really feel delayed or anything, but it might genuinely be a problem in OSU or other rhythm games. Considering the cost of the switches and the included caps, the insane 10,000mAh battery, and quality of the firmware/software, I don't think it's a bad deal at all... But I am looking for other options, something with a more premium sound and more easily moddable/configurable in terms of plate mount/stiffness.
Thank for the deep dive on the software! That’s definitely the glaring omission from all of my reviews. Sounds like they’ve really stepped up the software game since my GK68XS. I 100% agree that the board with the great switch options is well worth the money
Wow thanks for the comment, I was looking for opinions on the software. I ordered this board, im not really a keyboard enthusiast, Im just tired of all those garbage keyboards from the big manufacturers.
Which one do you think is better, ktt strawberry or ktt rose?
I haven't personally tried the Strawberry switches, but they are both very popular. Just from their popularity and KTT's reputation for putting out bangers I'd say you're making a solid purchase either way!
Do you think you can get ahold of the Cool Killer CK98 and review it? I'm obsessed with that keyboard at the moment or any of the cool killer keyboards😅
I'll definitely look into it! Thanks for the suggestion!
@The Surgeon Keebs Yeah either the CK75 or CK 98 Whichever one you prefer, they're both different sizes
Which one is more poppy akko rose reds or ktt rose?
I've never tried the Akko Rose Reds so I really can't say. Sorry!
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857 oh ok, please try them though, they sound really nice!
I'm absolutely obsessed with this keyboard and plan to buy it when I can. My only question is, is it difficult to see the letters when the RGB lights are flashing bright or can you still make them out normally? Also what do you use to clean off the thumb prints?
It is kinda difficult to see the legends in the dark with the RGB on. At least on the dark version. I can't really speak for the other colors. I just used a microfiber cloth to wipe it down. The board comes with a decent cloth that should work just fine for it, but I'd use the softest cloth you have to avoid scratches.
is using the foam that comes w/ the keyboard completely fine or do i have to buy new foam?
You run the risk of shorting your PCB with the foam that comes with the keyboard because it’s not ESD protected, but I and many others have successfully used the included foam. Be careful and know the risks, but you don’t HAVE to buy new foam
@@thesurgeonkeebs9857 could i ask, how can you short the pcb? im assuming if you rub the foam against the pcb and then it creations friction, then itll short it?
@@jjjjjjj111 Yeah just don't rub it all over a mouse pad or your carpet or anything and let it build up a static charge haha.
This is such a practical and useful build guide! Thank you for not taking anything for granted and sharing thoughts behind each step taken. Perfect video!
this video is so cool haha I love it
Thanks! The b roll lives on… kinda 😂
do you have a list of switches that for sure don't have interference? I cant find one anywhere with more than a few and most of keycaps are cherry and both my boards are north facing :(
The switches that I am 100% certain don't have north facing interference from personal experience are Gateron Box Inks, Gateron Oil Kings, Gateron g pro 2 series, green jackets, Big Wigs, Epomaker Flamingo, and Boba U4T. Aside from those, apparently Akko offers switches that don't have interference (research the switches), gateron's new molds avoid interference (research the switches before buying), KTT offers a large selection of switches that avoid interference (research lol), and basically all long poles are safe. There's just SO much I haven't tried. The best I can do is tell you what switches I know work north facing with cherry profile from experience, but I'm never going to be able to cover it all. If you have any specific switches in mind feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to help you research! Hope this helps
do you prefer ktt rose (this) or ktt mint?
I haven't personally tried them yet, but I've heard lots of great things about the mints. They're definitely on my list for the future!
Ymdk has cherry profile keycaps that are allegedly made for use with north facing rgb. Will these keycaps run into interference if used on a north facing rgb?
I'd have to get my hands on them to know for sure. It depends on if they were made for interference purposes or just for lighting. I'll try to find them, but if you have any info to point me to the set you're looking at I'd appreciate it!
Ijust got one of these for 50% off, which makes it a good deal again imo. Trying this mod as I'm typing!
Ya know, for half price it starts to sound like a good deal again. Congrats on the build! How'd it turn out?

I didn't try this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work in wired mode still. Worst case scenario you just have to open it back up and plug the batteries back in.
Great video! I’ve never made one either so this is really helpful as well
