I don't think the HECU were quite that psychopathic. They're just under the impression that the scientists overdid it and are bad people who need to be eliminated. And they, after all, are a no-bullshit, scary, off-the-books unit. (To be fair, the scientists did essentially spiraled the fate of Earth's future into certain demise, even though the government was funding it). They remind me of the marines from The Rock... in fact, they feel heavily inspired by that.

pretty sure the HECU also have built in night vision for their gas masks so it makes sense some would prefer to wear it. also heard M40's are incredibly comfortable to wear for long periods and dont really hinder your vision
