Best Budget Gravel Bike :: Salsa Journeyer Long-Term Review :: 700c Shimano Claris
Hanna and I got our Salsa Journeyers 700c Claris a few months ago, today we take a look at how they've held up! We hopped on the River Trail Network here in Grand Rapids, riding to Millenium Park amongst the fall colors.
As a budget/more affordable option, the Salsa Journeyer still brings alot of quality. Normally $1000, they can be found on sale in the spring for $850. Modern brakes, groupset and build offers alot of confidence when hitting the trails, and in its longevity.

Hey John, that looks like a fantastic trail. Curious about that Osmo you used with your phone. I hadn't seen one before. It appears to work quite well with the exception of a little wind noise. There are a lot of different brands on Amazon, why did you choose this one?

    • @SidwellAdventures

Thanks for asking! It’s by a pretty reliable brand, DJI, durable, it’s got good controls, the app works well, and it was very affordable at $75. The wind noise is pretty unavoidable without a wind socked mic.

Great video. I had an old Schwinn Varsity 10 speed. It was used by both my older brothers and handed down to me. I started riding it when I was in high school in the mid 70's and rode it until I was in my 40's. I rebuilt it and added some upgrades in the early 80's eventually handing it down to my son. I'm not sure if he still has it. I rode that bike everywhere, on the road, gravel and trails. It took a beating but never let me down. I replaced many tires on it, but never had a flat no matter what terrain I rode it on. Your video brought back a lot of good memories of simpler times. Thanks for sharing.

Hey, John... Don't know what your intent is with this old bike, but it sounds like it has a ton of sentimental value to you. Might want to hold off getting rid of it, just for a bit to avoid future regret. I've owned a couple bikes in my time including an '87 Schwinn Sierra mountain bike and '84 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe touring bike. Both bikes I let go and almost immediately regretted it. As there was no chance in finding the originals, I did acquire these models once again, both in exceptional shape. You can never have too many bikes. I still have my son's '86 16 inch wheel, Schwinn Jeda. He's 35 and my grandsons got to ride it too. ...and if you haven't decided on a gravel bike, yet... I suggest checking out the Poseidon Redwood. Exceptional value, it won't break your bank account.

I know its not optimal, but Ive had these exact pair since 2021 and been using them almost everyday in the gym since Dec 2022. Still alive and kicking! Although I take them off sometimes when I do heavy squats. Best shoes!

This is their best shoe in years and they stopped making it already to make a thicker free again. I use my VFF most of the time but if I do throw an athletic shoe on, this is it.

It’s really frustrating they’re not gunna make it like they used too 🫤 I wear mine all over, I think they’re super comfy for walking and running

Truly awful shoe. Incredibly narrow at the front, face me my first ingrown toenail. Thin mesh near the ankle is utter junk, tears apart rapidly. Severe heel elevation, so your tipped forward. Massive overblown heel wedge, natural heel strike is impossible. Cheaply made, massive profit, bottom line.

I agree that the rubber patch in the heel is not ideal for heel strike, but that's not how you are supposed to run anyways. It's also only a 4mm heel drop, which is actually below average for the current running shoe industry. Personally, I really like the heel and find it grips moves with my heel well. The front of the shoe may run a bit narrow, but I find the upper to be sock-like and conforms to the foot.

@@SidwellAdventures the first time I wore them, I could barely walk. They simply don't correlate to how the foot is shaped or articulates. I'm sure they caused my ingrown toenail, and quite quickly.

They worked well for me but i did feel in a 12 which i normally wear in nike that my outer toes were pushed against the material a bit. If it was your big toe, you should size up is my guess.
