Surprised by the shortest train ever!
On this spring day I was down on the NS Pokey District watching some coal trains climb the grade at Maybeury, WV.
We heard the hums of the GE’s coming and thought we had another long train coming our way… and to my surprise I witnessed the smallest train I’ve ever seen on a mainline such as this.
Maybe you all know what train this was but I did not catch a symbol and I’m not aware of any customers in this area that use covered hoppers.
I just had to stop and laugh after it passed.

Amtrak stops in railroad ghost town with vintage railcars
Просмотров 254День назад
Here we see the Amtrak 51 Cardinal make a stop in the railroad ghost town of Thurmond, a flag stop, with some private rail cars on a summer day in 2024. The bottom of Thurmond has no residents but up on the hill, 3 residents remain. Thurmond, West Virginia, was established in the late 19th century as a thriving coal town along the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. At its peak in the early 20th centu...

All aboard! It's Christmas Day 2024 and we are in the once booming railroad town of Thurmond to catch the eastbound Amtrak 50 Cardinal bound for New York. The train is running on time this morning and is full of passengers. Some even get on the train at Thurmond which is one of the least used stops in the entire country! What makes it even better is that the Amtrak Day One heritage unit #301 wa...

Ex-NS RJ Corman SD70M's Make FIRST Mine Run Ever on Loup Creek, Plus a Long Hood Forward Coal Train
I was just there a few months ago!!!😊
Those engines are smoking like an old ALCO locomotives. 🤣 You’d think they would have made a few mechanical adjustments when they repainted it. Oh well, it’s not an issue. That’s one Super Shot! Great Catch! 👍
Not a ex conrail it’s a rebild
Excellent good Video! I like it!
They are not taken care of
thats pretty interesting line, had to interchange some cars to ns from csx kanawah sub. got to take look at it from below. That bridge is long pretty impressive feat of engineering to be there since early 1900s. Always found the Virginian interesting
Interesting assemblage of ageing EMD power. Doesn't look like they spend *too* much on servicing, although a couple of those units had nice paint jobs
Dont let FJB see this video. He'll sign an executive order the convert all locos to battery powered electric. All that smoke will trigger him.🙀🙀🙀
It already has been done.
First comment! Nice catch Austin!
Thank you!
For a minute there, I thought you were sitting in a circle ☺
Kinda looks like it at first!
Better get those units to shop soon...
Maybe you’re right!
Hah. B-36 train. “two turning, two burning, two smoking, two choking and two more unaccounted for”
Haha!
You hit it rite on the nose Lil or no maintenance ronrdzl
great shot! Haven't seen a configuration where four helpers were stuck at the rear. Does this help the coal dump process later?
No. All units except for the 2 NS are pulled off the train once they get to the yard.
The train is NOT struggling, it turbo is worn and that lets oil go right into the engine. When oil gets into an engine it makes lots of smoke. IDIOTS today.
Someone is offended 😂 calm down it’s a train and video of said train. Nothing to flip out over.
A very nicely presented video. A neat little out of the way location. A “survivor” station to highlight. Some text to read, with some narration mixed in. Amtrak mixed with freight. Perfect length of the video also. Nicely done, G&A Adventures.
Eight engines WOW, that train was long and heavy.
It sure was!
Outstanding video and thanks for sharing. Dave
Thank you!
Mu cable came out?
Is this crossing the Kanawha to Deepwater?
Yep!
Struggling? Hardly. Initially, they were only in run 2 or 3. Only toward the end did I hear anything like run 6 or 7 with two or three more "notches" to go.
I reckon there's a speed restriction on the bridge, and that probably why old mate isn't getting into it. Mind you a couple of those locos are definitely in need of overhaul. Fire starters with that much oil being burnt.
Whereabouts in Virginia was that at
Looks like them old girls were doing some huffing and some puffin
Girls?
@ShawnCalay yeah it's a figure of speech
The Virginian was all electric once upon a time.
Not all the Virginian was electrified
You are at my favorite railfan spot when I went to college at Montgomery in the late 80s and early 90s. I photographed NS taking a 200 car test coal train out of there once. it had 9 engines . 3 upfront, 3 mid train helpers (manned) and a second set 20 cars from the rear. The rear 20 cars were conrail loaded grain cars plus a caboose. It was an awesome site. to see.
Wow! That would have been cool to see!
@@GandAdventures I wish I had shot video of it. All I have are still shots. I need to get them digitized. I do have a video of the circus train between alloy and clark's gap.. it is up on myu page if you are interested in it/.
They just burn those engines up.😂
They were working hard lol!
How do they control 8 movers on this train?
I know the rear helpers are manned.
Radio control.
3rd and 4th units turbo chargers are ready to take a dump
Haha!
I was thinking the same thing. If they weren't having problems that train might not be bmoving as slow as it is.
That looks more like the results of idling the engines for long periods of time in cold weather. That can make EMD engines “soup up” with oil in the exhaust stacks, especially if the radiator shutters won’t close to keep the engine warm when it’s idling. If that happens, the oil in the exhaust stacks can take quite a while to heat up and burn out after a load has been put on the engine so it heats up again. It’s not always a turbo causing the smoke. Edit: those are probably helper engines that get cut off the train at the top of the hill and then they go back down to the bottom and wait for the next train to push. DPU engines normally don’t get 4 units at the back end of the train, they’re usually spread out with some in the middle and a couple on the rear or 30 or 40 cars ahead of the rear.
I was worried about that smoke. Thanks for the info.
Usually coal loads though the mountains don't go much faster than maybe 20-30 mph depending on region.
2 Working Locos, and 2 Locos repelling Mosquitos, bringing a pile of pollution to a city near you!
Won't be much longer....most states don't use any coal at all
This coal gets imported. Why are you so worried about pollution?
@@railenthusiast4830 i didn't say nothing about pollution....coal is very well needed....even in steel production
Nah...I don't think it was struggling at all..the last two locos were just smoking a lot. Four powerful locos pulling one of these, nah, no biggie.
True. There's an awful lot of tractive effort there, so even though there wasn't much speed, they would still get the job done. Especially the 2 in the lead which were the AC44C6m rebuilds. Those things are brutes!
Maybe so! But it sure wasn’t a gliding ride LOL!
@@GandAdventures So true. Mean ol' Mr. Gravity doing his thing!
Undoubtedly there is a speed restriction on the trestle, common practice. Certainly not struggling
You can hear the helpers throttle up and begin to push as they leave the trestle
Those are some very tired EMDs front and back.
You’re right on that!
@ The kicker are the ex-NS SD60s once destined for the SD60E program, now working for a short line.
Those Ex- NS SD60's were working hard and in need of some engine work. Just smoking like crazy.
Looks like that last loco was carrying all the load
Working hard for sure!
Wow that 3rd unit looks like a SD-70. and the 4th also a EMD , not sure another SD-70 or SD-60 burning oil ? Usually its GE like the leads that blow turbos and smoke it up . EMD used to be so superior in build but its rugged terrain and extreme loads. Nice video
Thank you! They are fun to watch, that’s for sure.
They're SD60s, mostly ex Norfolk Southern
That first horn created a eerie echo
Wow at first I thought 2 of the locos might have been steam locos with all that smoke billowing out from them. A great location to capture all the locos working hard to move this long load of coal. Great to see you're back - missed viewing your amazing railfanning uploads. Happy New Year.
I could have thought that the smokers were ALCO diesels!!!
Same here! They were sure working hard. And thanks for the nice comment, glad to be back at it!
is that in or at or in and at?!
Best spot in Lexington for catching NS

Hi Walter! Merry Christas!
Oh I love a CHESSIE 🚂
Sweet catch. I’ve only ever caught Amtrak passing thru, love Thurmond!
Stop the cap 🧢 😂
lol put them protective glasses on as soon as he seen someone recording
I’ve always wanted to know why does one engine run forward and one engine runs backwards
He started a rival of interest in America’s railroads & a flurry in Amtrak travel, foregoing planes, us included. Wouldn’t have ever had the courage without him. Ride on Shoestring Mark, and God bless.
Actually its conductor explanation engineer sits on right side conductor sits on left except some GP9’s
I saw him when I was catching Florida East Coast
Hey, nice video I just saw this video. I’d like you to come down to Clifton Forge on December 18 and see me because December is my birthday and I’m going to Clifton Forge for my birthday my birthday until the 27th but I want to write Amtrak on the 27th because they were sold out of tickets so instead I’m celebrating my birthday on the 18th.
Never seen one do thaf before i think they are ussally focused when they do moves like that
Just wished you would have I'd the landmarks last time I was there was in 1999 for mom's funeral
