That’s kind of how I am with Spanish. I can understand most of what I read or hear but struggle to respond smoothly unless I really take my time. I think it’s harder to produce sentences with correct grammar and structure than it is to simply recognize the meaning of a sentence that someone else has produced.
Wow this is literally me
that’s how it was for me with Teochew (Chinese dialect), I could understand it from hearing my family speak it. One day I decided to say a few common phrases for laughs, and it somehow unlocked the rest of the dialect for me!
This sexuality shit is getting out of hand
Very good explanation, you have a nice way of explaining things
I speak Spanglish very often, which is okay to do with my bilingual friends, but not ok with my monolingual friends/family u.u My bilingual friends and I sometimes joke saying that "we know so many languages that we dont know any at all" because we keep switching languages mid sentences.
That's me with my mum's language. She never spoke it with us so i learned it by listening to her conversations. I struggle to speak it but i understand it perfectly.
Had a friend of mine mention that he can understand Spanish but can't speak it back from years of Spanish classes
Love this video, thanks!
👏👏👏👏👏
In eastern Canada we call it fringlish when you switch from french to English in the same sentence.
i think the hostility to receptive bilingualism is probably from well meaning people concerned for the future of the language
Feels a little redundant
Here to inquire what you're drinking and to feed the algo
Appears to be YooHoo Chocolate Drink
@jackdizzy123 it does look like it, but it isn't
i think it’s calypso
It’s the unflavored yerba lol. Glass bottle.
@@omiwinkycorrect 😂 why did I watch again to confirm lol
It tastes kinda like Kix, i give it to my kids and I tell them they'll turn into monkeys if they eat it. Sorry you feel threatened by the word gorilla. Anyway, i gotta get back to my panic attack because I found out that ritz are called crackers and seeing that slur just made my anxiety spike.
I'm lowkey addicted to everything chocolate and all the cheap chocolate stuff is branded like that and its kinda fucked up. But 750 g for 2,79 is 750 g for 2,79. (just noting, it does feel weird also from my white perspective, but as I still buy it, definitely not as bad as for you, so i actually dont know why i am still writing this, if im actually adding anything, i mean there are no other comments i could just write first and go, but... idk I never figured out what other reasons than racism there could be for that branding and I think its messed up)
tbh i think receptive bilingualism is super impressive, because the "hearing and understanding" part of language learning is the hard part for me
No....
I speak Spanish and this is also the case for us, “casa” (house) being pronounced as ‘kasa’ and “cielo” (sky) being pronounced as ‘sielo’. But if you’re from Spain, you might pronounce it as ‘thielo’, weird but interesting.
Hence the name Ceasar. You could pronounce it as SEE-SAH, but originally it would be like KEY-SER. Now, If you happen to be Dutch and use the last one, it sounds almost exactly the same as the dutch word "keizer". Guess what that means? Emperor. So, Ceasar might not be a name, but probably a title.
What's your favorite Austronesian language?
Super interesting, thank you 🙏 🎉
What about q vs k and why q always with u? And did ç come from?
I just find the fact that the letter C is pronounced completely different to how we use it, but which came first. Assibilation or the letter C being pronounced See?
I just subbed. I have always thought C was just a mean thing to do to foreign learners. Thanks for this!
To a non-native speaker, who has "c" pronounced similar to "ts" in their language, it is both useless and confusing in English. Your spelling is a MESS 😅
I think that it has Chris style food (food made by a guy named Chris) and Ruth owns the place.
it is both useless *and* interesting! its history is very cool and interesting, and historically it was even useful. but in today's English, "C" is pretty much always redundant. i say "pretty much" to point out where it seems to still have some leftover use: in the "ch" digraph. but i say "seems" because even that sound could be spelled "tsh".
Cool! I love learning new things thank you!
Se lo sai, lo sai… 😂
english used to have phonemic gemination ! :3

Sir, a -2nd- -3rd- -4th- 5th linguistics guy has hit the fyp
Words are supposed to have meaning. Meanings and word usage will both change over time. These two points are just facts. Ergo, not all words will hold the same meaning over time. ("Inflammable" has long been a point of frustration for me.) My current niggles are "when" vs "whenever"; I hear them being used interchangeably and i just... feel old.
I definitely add a tone to texts when they end with a period but it’s really the only thing I do that for. It’s so true that texting is an entirely different subset of language because it truly doesn’t follow classic grammar rules for most people
A word's a word

English and the latin lamguages are different because almost all the other language groups have totally different grammer and structue.
This is how everyone everywhere speaks.
Even in Spanish we have our own version of No, yeah and yeah, no
Some languages ARE better than others to spend the time to learn. Of course that's true. Learning Italian in America isn't nearly as useful as learning French or Spanish for example. As you will encounter vastly more French or Spanish speaking people in ANY job in America than Italian. So yea, I would prioritize one language over another in a heartbeat as it's my money for college and my time. That's just facts.
One problem with this line of reasoning though is that if you learn a more common language you have to compete with more people who are bilingual/native in two languages. If you learn a less common language the demand is lower but so is the supply and the competition
ANOTHER ONE!!!
Who cares about diversity? I want the right people for the job.
We are in a time where people dont believe they need to work for their accomplishments. They believe that they should get their desired results right now. Not 10yrs from now. Attention spans wont get any better no matter who our president is. Having the internet and social media at our fingertips has made people lazy and now they believe their dreams of grandeur are "owed" to them. Colleges will never get cheaper because they are for profit, not for education. No child left behind means kids get passed to the next grade when they arent ready for it. They are set up to fail before they even start. We have a lot of problems in this country and they wont be fixed any time soon.
This is really cool content man! Keep it up!!
By the time I learned what the first or second terms meant, I had no brain room left for the rest lol 😅
Excellent explanation and presentation.
Didn’t know I would see this today
